Mother! (2017)
WTF? It was almost indescribable, good acting but the story?!?!
Where do I start? I see it is described as Drama/Horror/Mystery. Drama yes there was heaps of that but it was just weird. Horror, well "Get Out" was the first horror I've seen for a long time and I understood that, but this beggared belief. Mystery, certainly as it took viewers on a story that seemed plausible for a short while, then threw several very large monkey wrenches in for good luck. Just when you seemed to latch on to the story again it weaved and darted about on more mindless tangents.
But I cannot say I hated it so there may be a glimmer of hope for some. It may become a cult in years to come but it certainly won't be in my DVD collection.
In the end I would have to describe it as "irritating", It truly does your head in trying to follow the story.
American Made (2017)
An enjoyable if somewhat lengthy movie
I was lucky to get an advanced screening. First off, at least it kept my attention the whole way through. I had previously seen Cruise in the "Mummy" movie recently released and was not impressed with his acting there.
In this movie he returned to form and therefore the story-line was far more plausible. I say story-line, but in reality it is one of those docu-drama's, being based on fact. I wonder how much was dramatization as there were some parts where you would ask "did this sh*t really happen?!"
Would I be inclined to add it to my DVD collection, no. It was good as a one time showing. I suspect the length of it worked somewhat against it. A long movie needs to build up to a crescendo, and whilst this had lots of action it never seemed to hit that top note.
The Mummy (2017)
Very close to being rated a B movie
Only due to some A-list actors is this movie prevented from falling into the B grade. Mind you, it was a narrow escape, as it seemed there was a lot of over acting by even the A-listers. I suspect the blame for over acting lies squarely at the director's feet. The storyline was jagged, no fluidity to it.
Oh sure it had some good moments (and some funny ones) and the special effects (not so much in your face but always there) propped it up but without a good story there is only so much that special effects and A-listers can do.
The end was somewhat of an anti-climax and left the story very much open to continuation. Let us hope that the next film learns from its past mistakes.
I was disappointed in it as it never met expectations and proves that having A-listers does not guarantee success. I suspect in time both Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe will have wished they never featured in it, definitely not one of their best moments.
