An Exquisite movie
31 October 2005
SOMEWHERE IN TIME goes on my list of all time favorites. I saw it at the show when it first came out, bought it as soon as it came out on video, and have watched it countless times since. It's been kind of a ritual between my youngest (married) daughter and me. it's one of her favorite movies as well. Occasionally when we are alone, we cozy up on the couch, box of tissues close by, and watch in awe at the beauty of Jane Seymore (she is her most beautiful as Elise). Her wardrobe is the most exquisite of Victorian fashion imaginable. She looks like a bisque doll. Her voice, her hair, just flawless. I live in Michigan and have visited Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel where the movie was filmed, it was the perfect choice for location. The theme music of the movie is beautiful, and was played at my daughter's wedding. Chris Reeve's chemistry with Jane's was perfect. I find this movie reminiscent of THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR, another of my very favorite movies.

A silly movie that takes you on a fun ride-not for everyone

I happened to watch this movie because my friend's daughter (who was into Goth) was visiting and wanted to rent it. She had seen it and wanted us to see it with her. Maybe it's my sense of humor, I don't know but I got a kick out of this movie and it's characters. It's kind of in the category of, "After Hours", "Scavanger Hunt" and "Clue". I laughed quite a lot through it. Maybe it was partly because I was seeing these "actors who at the time were not that well known, but now are" in a movie such as this. I saw the movie in 2003 for the first time and I was really surprised at the cast! Ben Affleck? Kate Hudson? Christina Ricci?! Kate Hudson was too cute and I loved the scene with her and Jay in the restaurant, the Indian group playing in the background was hilarious. The soundtrack was excellent. The songs fit right along with the story line and enhanced it. From the comments I had read so far, not everyone has the sense of humor needed for a movie like this. I have seen the movie about 5 times since and still enjoy it. Not everyone I have shown this movie to enjoyed it as much. But then Mad Magazine was one of my favorites growing up. Loved it! I loved shows like "Fridays", "Laugh In", "In Living Color", and of course, SNL. To sum it up, I was glad my young Goth friend introduced me to 200 Cigarettes. It was a fun movie and I will still continue to watch it on occasion.

A movie that is timeless
23 October 2005
I first saw 'Since You Went Away" when I was a small girl in the 50's on our small TV. I can't tell you how many times I have watched it since then. I am a Claudette Colbert fan - in fact, I can classify her as my all time favorite actress. That lady has so much class and everything she does is first quality. She can make you laugh and make you cry buckets. For the times it is a very lengthy movie (approx. three hours) but those three hours go by in a hurry because you are caught up in the March family and the trials and tribulations a mother and her daughters went through while their loving husband and father was off at war. The closeness and love between a woman and her husband and his love for his daughters and theirs for him shines out even though you only see family pictures of him. Joseph Cotton as uncle Tony was the highlight of the movie for me. Robert Walker's character was so heartwarming as the disappointing nephew of the Colonel, the March's boarder during their financially hard times. Monty Whooly as Colonel Smollett was so delightful (especially his interaction with the family pet, Soda). Jennifer Jones'portrayal of the oldest daughter who gets a job as a nurse, caring for wounded soldiers, and her romance with William Smollett. It tears at your heart, makes you laugh, makes you cry, and it truly takes you through the experience of a family torn apart by WWII. I wonder if the movie made the song "Together" a big hit back then. It's a very special movie that tells a story that has been repeated many times since WWII. Over the years our loved ones are still going off to fight wars. The eras change but the reality and sacrifice families make never changes whether it's the 40's, 60's, or the present. One of the best, if not the best, movie to curl up under an afghan, shut off the phone, and watch with no interruptions. I can rightfully say "They just don't make movies like that any more"!

The Haunting (1963)

One of my all-time favorite horror flicks
23 October 2005
I saw this movie the summer I got out of high school. I went with a date and he about dug a hole in the arm of my sweater, it scared him that much. What makes the movie really scary is the fact that it does not have any slashers, monsters, blood and/or gore. Robert Wise scared you with camera angles, the unknown "presences" that seemed to be always lurking behind every door, and the sound effects were very effective. Filming it in black and white also made it creepier. The audiences imaginations and their own personal fears make the movie very effective. We have all experienced a frightening event at some time in our lives (dark closets, what's under the bed, what's outside the window after dark, did you hear that?, etc.) This movie plays on those feelings as you watch it. The remake was disappointing at the least. It had a great cast, but the producers/directors were trying too hard. These days, it seems that special effects can sometimes ruin a movie. There's nothing to play on ones imagination. That's why the book is usually much better than the movie. I purchased this movie on VHS a few years ago and I watch it every once in awhile in the dark (of course) when my husband is here. I don't think I could watch it alone - in the dark - in the night....
