Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
Fun for the fam
If you know what to expect then this movie is a treat. Definitely don't go in expecting it to be realistic or scientifically accurate.
The villains were such bad-good over-actors that it really was only borderline annoying. The villains gave the plot the illusion of an antagonist storyline, which was enough to bolster the plot and help it get forward momentum.
I was impressed by the main cast, they honestly did a great job.
I love this movie for what it is. It's a fun movie for the family with enough adrenaline-inducing action to keep everyone interested. This movie is great for anyone who is even remotely interested in dinosaurs or sharks, but it's a treat for anyone in your family who is a fan of megalodons like my kids and I are.
Fear the Walking Dead (2015)
Great casting, uncreative writing leading to lack of continuity
I initially was very impressed with this spinoff and the writing. I was especially impressed by the inclusion of Indigenous characters and actors among the storyline and cast.
What I was not impressed with was the mundane, nonsensical writing that the writers seemed to think would drive the plot, when it actually resulted in a lack of continuity in the scripts. *blows excessive raspberries at unintelligent writers*
For example, in season 3's plot line of the desert horde coming for the ranch: at any moment when Nick was watching this happen, he could've blown the red truck's horn to draw the horde away. This tactic was used in the original TWD series many times. Blow horn, drive away, walkers follow. Nick and Troy could have, at any point, followed up the tail end of the desert horde and blown the truck horn and driven away, leading at least part of the horde with them. This would have resulted in more continuity across TWD universe as a whole.
Instead, the writers for this show decided that Nick and Troy would be stupid and just watch the incident take place, rather than show any potential for creative, common sense problem-solving. It was especially off-putting given that earlier in the show, other members of the cast, including Nick, were already much aware that even a small noise would capture the attention of a group of walkers. This small lack of continuity resulted in making this show look less like a part of TWD universe and more like an amateur project from...well, an amateur.
If you're the type to not pay attention or actually absorb information, this show is a great option for you!
Sweet Magnolias (2020)
Saccharine and stereotypical, but nice
First of all, the idea that Justin Bruenin is more handsome than Chris Klein in any universe is laughable. Chris should've been cast as Cal, but that's just me.
Secondly, I lived in Alabama for almost 20 years and have either lived in or traveled to every southern state where accents are customary, so I am familiar with several different styles of southern accent. Chris's take on a southern accent is comically overdone and almost painful to hear. HOWEVER, I forgive him because he's not actually from the south.
On one hand, the over-exaggerated accent does lend itself to the maligning of Bill. (And if we're being honest, Bill is actually a decent guy overall and he really needs more undesirable traits, especially if someone as stellar as Chris Klein is going to portray him.)
That being said, Chris could've benefited from spending some time in the south, around real southerners, as part of the research he did for this role. Or, preferably, he could've just not had an accent whatsoever. There are plenty of people who were born and raised in the Carolinas who don't have accents.
(The occasional fake and overdone southern accent from some of the other random cast mates is also annoying.)
Other than that, I don't really have a beef with this show. The writing is decent, although from time to time the writers do get some of the southern idioms wrong. I enjoy the plot lines for the most part, even though conceptually they have been done to death in the industry.
I enjoy the characters and their backstories (what little we know of them thus far, anyway), and I really love the energy from the cast and the stories themselves.
I think the casting was done very well for the most part, again with exception to Cal, as I believe Chris would've been a better fit for that role. Justin would've been a better Bill.
Rosaline (2022)
Credit for being original, but also no credit for not being true to the original
I give the series credit for being original, but I simply don't understand why the writers couldn't have kept Shakespeare's original storyline where Rosaline dumped Romeo weeks before the Capulet ball. Now those who are ignorant of Shakespeare will stupidly believe this series is true to the original and they will then pass their ignorance onto the likewise ignorant.
Is this series better because Romeo left Rosaline for Juliet? Nope.
I mean, don't fix what isn't broken, I guess? It was a dumb move on the writers' parts.
I'm going to keep watching the series because, aside from the writers departing from the aforementioned original plot line, it is actually quite well-written and the casting is amazing.
Jane the Virgin (2014)
Ridiculous show based on antiquated concepts
This show is basically about a bunch of people coddling an emotionally immature, delusional girl. I loved it for its cast, but the character Jane was absolutely immature and positively ridiculous in every sense.
Although the show is entertaining in general, I honestly hit FF through all of the flashbacks that started with, "When Jane Gloriana Villanueva was..." or whatever. So yes, I absolutely gave zero cares about the title character, even though the show is literally named after her. She was the most basic, dumb, uninteresting character on the entire show.
I absolutely loved Petra, Raf, Xo, Ro, Alba, etc. Petra was probably the most stimulating character overall. Yael's portrayal of Petra was flawless, and generally Petra was the more grounded and mature character compared to Jane. I truly loved her.
I was really glad for the ending, not because I thought Jane deserved it but because I was glad everything worked out in general.
To be clear: Jane absolutely didn't deserve her ending because she was a petulant child who made terrible cbocies and was not at all smart, despite being touted as such throughout the show. I honestly couldn't think of a less intelligent character on the show.
And yet, the writers had the other characters falling over themselves for Jane throughout the entire series. *Eyeroll* Ugh.
The only thing worse than a completely delusional, clingy, and immature title character is one who promotes antiquated, exclusionary beliefs. The entire show itself is based on the premise that the title character is "saving herself" for marriage. Aside from saying that the institution of marriage was designed on the notion that women could and should be owned as property, I won't even bother to outline all of the things in this show that are morally problematic-anyone with half a brain and an education can figure out why.
Five stars because I liked the cast and all of the other characters.
The Society (2019)
Dumb show for even dumber people
I am watching this show only because Sean Berdy is in it and I love him. They should have figured out in the 1st episode that the bus that dropped them off obviously had a road somewhere that led in and out of the town, because how else did the bus leave? The writing is terrible. Please fire your writers and hire all new ones.
Cruel Summer (2021)
you had me until "antipode"
Season 1 episode 4, blondie mispronounced "antipode" as "ant-ee-poad" instead of the correct pronunciation of "an-ti-po-dee". The fact that neither the director(s) nor any of the show producers corrected her means that none of them probably know how to pronounce that word, either. Minus 7 stars for ignorance of the entire cast and crew and the inability to know how to refer to a dictionary. Ignorance is disgusting!
iZombie (2015)
Great show, but John Tracy HAS TO GO
Great show, but the consistent mispronunciation of basic, simple French words by John Tracy (Enzo Lambert) has ruined the show for me. He consistently pronounces 'bien' with the Spanish/ignorant American inflection (bee-EN) rather than the actual, correct French inflection (bee-ON with a soft nasal N). For the average ignorant person they will never know; but for those of us who actually speak French, hearing a two-bit actor mispronounce a basic, fundamental French word is BEYOND irritating. It's a shame because I really love this show, but John Tracy is a terrible actor and he HAS TO GO.
Gotham (2014)
Some fine entertainment
I legitimately began watching this show only because I saw that Donal Logue is in it and he is one of my favorite actors. I later discovered that David Zayas, Shane West, BD Wong, Peyton List, and Alexander Siddig are in it as well - - so consider me sold! Some of my favorite actors and actresses are featured throughout the series, so regardless of what other people think, I am a fan!
The Chosen (2017)
Good
I liked the artisanship of the sets and the accuracy of the scripts. I particularly enjoyed how Jesus referred to his mother as "ima," the Hebrew word for "mother." I was disappointed by some of the word mispronounciations, and occasionally disappointed by the misspellings in the subtitles (like how the word "ima" was consistently misspelled as "eema"). I like how the events were presented and executed overall, but the accents of the actors reduced the air of authenticity. It would have been far more impressive if they had spoken Hebrew and the subtitles been a translation of the spoken Hebrew. At any rate, I am forever a fan of any portrayal of ancient Hebrew culture, especially the life and ministry of Jesus. So, while this show is not a 10/10 in my book, it's still enjoyable.
Queen of the South (2016)
Writing could have been better
Text: The series is mostly enjoyable, but there were a lot of times when the creativity in the writing was simply lacking. The lack of creative writing added to the inconsistency of the writing for Teresa are a big NO from me.
Then there is the problem with the editing. For example, in season 3 episode 5 ("El Juicio") there is a short film sequence that is supposed to denote the passage of 1 month of time. I'm sure there had to have been better footage to choose from for this sequence that would have better conveyed the passage of time. If not, the editor who seemed the sequence together could have at least used some speed ramps to give the viewer a feeling of fast-forwarding through time. Thank goodness the writers decided to include a statement in James' line, "$30 million in a month" to clue us in, because the editing definitely didn't lead one to believe any time was passing.
Casting of Devon Finch could have been better. Casting of Lil' T could have been waaaaay better, she's terrible in her line deliveries.
Overall, I give the series 5 stars for the fairly decent writing, nice casting, and intriguing though extremely incredulous and unrealistic plot.
If Loving You Is Wrong (2014)
Amateur hour when it comes to this show
First off the filmography is poor. This is supposed to be a drama with a lot of suspension, but the lighting and filming style does not accommodate that at all. Outdoor scenes are much too bright--dramatic cinestyle is supppsed to be flat, every amateur filmmaker knows this (except for the ones working on this show, obviously, so I'm guessing they have never gone to film school). I don't know if it's a budget issue or what, but there really needs to be filters and effects applied in editing. They could at least make the scenes a little hazy like Days of Our Lives.
My second problem with this series is Faun. She was recast with Judi Blair and, quite frankly, Marie Burke was far better-looking and a much better actress. Looks and ability aside, Marie Burke has more if an innocence to her, which was a nice contrast on-screen to Matt Cook's portrayal of Joey. Love scenes between Cook and Blair fall flat and leave much to be desired in the way of chemistry. Cook and Burke had a fantastic, undeniable on-screen chemistry that would have gone a long way in the love scenes.
Perhaps the biggest problem with this show is the writing. Kelly is a weak character giving a bad name to women. Kelly repeatedly claimed it wasn't "her place" to let Alex, her long-time friend, know about Marcie and Brad in the shed--yet she felt it was perfectly "her place" to tell Marcie, someone she barely knew, to "look closer" for Peppa. In reality, Alex would've never remained friends with Kelly after Kelly betrayed her to Marcie. Then there's the problem with Eddie and Pete. As someone else has said, Lushion already knows how volatile Eddie is, he would know to take Pete's fears about him seriously; Lushion's lax approach to the situation is out-of-chatacter and is too big of a discrepancy in the writing. One redeeming quality of the writing, however, is how Alex's friends stood by her in the first season. Encouraging concepts like forgiveness are what makes this show worth watching.
The four stars are for: 1. Mostly-good casting; 2. Good suspense, though at times it is at the expense of the plot making sense; 3. The positive concepts being portrayed in the writing; 4. I don't really have a specific reason for giving one more star other than I feel that with the right improvements, the show could be a much bigger success.
Stitchers (2015)
I miss it...
I really, really love this show. I was really upset when it was cancelled, and I still am upset about it months later. Great story line, great writing, great directing, great cast. I really hoped this one would last a long time because there was really nothing like it being produced. This show and its story line are truly unique. Hopefully in the future someone will revamp it (with the same cast, of course!) so that I can actually enjoy watching t.v. again.
Black·ish (2014)
Don't take it literally, people!
I really don't understand how people can take COMEDY so literally and forget that it's meant to be funny. This is just a great show that adds satirical connotations to racial stereotypes. With the new presidency, some of the episodes have taken a slightly more politically and racially divisive direction, but is still overall a great show to watch because it makes you think and see things from another perspective (which, I dare say, is the entire *point* of the show).
My only qualm with this show is that there are no other races but black and white portrayed, which in itself is a racially exclusive gesture. But even without other races being portrayed, this show still deserves a 10-star rating.
Once Upon a Time (2011)
Unexpectedly impressed!
When this show was first recommended to me a few years ago, I have to admit that the sound of a TV show based on intermingling many fairy tales and varying plot lines together had me skeptical; but after watching the first season, I was hooked.
Now the series is at season 7, and I am still hooked. Season 7 was a bit slow to start, testing the patience of its audience--but now that we're at episode 10 of season 7, I can say that it was worth the wait. Seeing everything unfold as it has the last few episodes makes up for the slow start.
I am also extremely pleased that Adelaide Kane has been added to the cast. She is my favorite actress, and after her previous show, 'Reign', was canceled, I have been having Adelaide withdrawals, lol. She is a stunning young lady, but also (fortunately) a very talented actress, so she's not on the screen just for looks as opposed to some other actresses.
Lana Parilla never ceases to blow me away with her performances, and I'm really excited that her role in the series continues to grow and progress with new story lines.
With the addition of Adelaide and a few other actors/actresses and a host of entirely new story lines, I am more eager than ever to see each new episode, week after week.
Game of Thrones (2011)
A masterpiece
This series could easily be considered a masterpiece as far as TV shows are concerned. There was a fair share of lackluster performing from certain members of the cast insofar as the delivery of certain lines was concerned, but all in all it's great. Other than changing how certain lines were delivered/the inflection of voice with which certain lines were delivered, there isn't much else to gripe about. This series is worth the hours of your life you lose watching it.
Zoolander 2 (2016)
Just loved the over-the-top comedy, whereas I typically don't
I have to say that this movie really took me by surprise. Not 'surprise' as in it wasn't predictable (because it was pretty predictable, lol), but 'surprise' as in I was surprised at how enjoyable and sincere the over-the-top comedy elements were. Usually when I watch an over-the-top comedy, it makes me roll my eyes; but the over-the-top comedy elements in this movie had me genuinely laughing and enjoying the movie from start to finish. These guys aren't out to make you think deeply about life, they are just trying to make you laugh!
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995)
Best show of my childhood...NO, best show EVER!
I just love this show--always have, always will. Kevin Sorbo and Michael Hurst are just phenomenal together. If you have never seen this series, I feel you are truly missing out. Not only is it great fun, but you can also watch how Hercules and Iolaus grow as characters/people throughout the series, which adds to the sincerity of the characters. A lot of people complain/have complained about the anachronisms and the mixing of historical timelines in this series, but they obviously have a stick up their bum. Firstly, this series never in any way stated that it was going to be 100% historically accurate. In fact, this series would be more accurately categorized as 'historical fiction'--historical fiction is a story that is based around allegedly true events, but with an artistic or creative interpretation or spin. At any rate, you shouldn't be taking this series so seriously that you can't have fun watching it. It's just great, period.
Top of the Lake (2013)
Was great, except...
Has a great main story line, and the execution of it is great overall. The additional story lines throughout add more meat to each episode, creating one of those feelings that you want to keep watching and keep watching. My only complaint is Elisabeth Moss. Although she is a great actress, her lackluster New Zealand accent ruined the overall feeling of this series. When I say 'lackluster', I mean the accent wasn't even there. It was like she wasn't even trying. She could have at least done a false BE (British English) accent if she couldn't do a NZ or Australian accent. If it weren't for Elisabeth Moss' lack of an accent, then I would give this series ten stars. The second season of this show is as captivating as the first season, with the addition of Gwendoline Christie being a vast improvement to the show overall. Elizabeth's fake Australian accent doesn't improve in the second season, so be aware of that going in lest you be disappointed all over again.
Exposed (2016)
Riveting to the end!
This movie has received many negative reviews, obviously from people who either weren't intelligent enough to understand what was going on in the movie, or simply didn't watch it to the end to see the various plot lines resolved. Key hint in that sentence: YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT TO THE END TO UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON. You won't figure out what is going on until the end, when all the pieces fall into place. This is a story of Isabel's damage/traumas, coupled alongside the mystery of revealing said damage/traumas, along with a great 'whodunnit' element. In the beginning you are initially confused, then your confusion will grow into suspicion as you sense that there is another narrative at play. It is extremely intriguing, shocking, and emotionally wrenching in the end.
Also, some reviewers mocked the mix of languages and subtitles used in this film, and all I have to say to that is the people who didn't like it are probably simply not intelligent enough to keep up with what is going on. Don't let the negative reviewers keep you from seeing this suspenseful work.
