Endeavour: Striker (2021)
Is Bright losing the plot?
With reference to an earlier review I am aware that filming took place under limited circumstances, some shots are cramped etc. Chief Inspector Bright, I believe, is supposed to be looking unkempt (long hair) and possible mental deterioration, hence the tunic badge error? Morse is changing too, as he must, into the cynical curmudgeonly drinker he would later become. This, unfortunately is his destiny. I believe Shaun Evans has said he won't be doing any more Endeavour. I believe that, with a gap, Matthew Rhys would make an excellent late 70's/early 80's Morse. I agree with Shaun Evans that no-one should try and join up the time periods depicted. Thanks to Shaun and all on Endeavour, it's been a wonderful bonus!
The Mandalorian (2019)
What just happened?
I was over the moon with series 1 of The Mandalorian, but really quite shocked at the chasm that's opened up between the quality of the dialogue in series 1, and last night's opener to series 2. Not to mention the sluggish pacing -we didn't need to see all of the desert journeys.
It was almost as if the writers has been told to explain what was happening as if to very small children eg 'we are here to do X, but if Y happens, we will go over there and do Z' - all while the action is taking place on screen.
Finally - what happened to the superb 'cowboy novella' type drawings at the end. The original idea was great, in that the stylised drawings were dissimilar to the 'real' filmed characters. Just like drawings of outlaws in the old West who no-one had ever seen in real life.
Fingers crossed they haven't ruined this brilliant series. I'm going to find out if there've been any changes in the writing department........
Dad's Army: The Lost Episodes (2019)
Shame on a previous reviewer!
The overwhelming justification for remaking these 3 episodes is because they are genuinely unavailable. I don't know whether anyone with primative video equipment ever pointed it at the telly in 1968. If there IS any footage it must be unusable (unlike the episode which was discovered, restored and colourised some years ago). Some of the writing in Episode 1 of this series has some really good moments and gags which I remember from watching it about 50 years ago. I avoided the newish movie because I don't feel (as with the first movie version) that the format is not as charming outside the studio and dreamy woodland lanes of the TV environment. Cast is much better than hoped for and the reason I can't agree with the previous reviewer is that these are the original scripts - so the comment is nonsensical.......
