Leave the World Behind (2023)
A true horror film for the '20s
Horror films have always taken societal fears of the era and used them to create our monsters. Atomic bombs in the 50s gave us Godzilla, Richard Speck and Charles Manson gave us Halloween, and today's national infighting has now given us Leave the World Behind.
President Obama's minimal involvement in its creation is likely behind the negative reviews, because this story is an excellent, horrifying film. (This is unfortunate, because it hits too close to reality for comfort) . Tension builds from the start. The storyline is strong. Great acting by all involved. Kudos especially to Roberts, Myha'la and Mackenzie for bringing dynamic emotional depth to their characters. All of the actors' performances ring true.
Leave the World Behind is the type of movie that will generate deep discussions and may cause you some sleepless nights.
Snag: Chapter One (2023)
This is only part 1!
This is very obviously a Quentin Tarantino wannabe, and it is slightly entertaining as such. Lots of twists and turns with weird characters and weird conversations and weird locations, as well as the traditional Tarantino non-linear storytelling. The various actors and scenes in the movie are entertaining and quite violent at times, albeit with dark humor. The thing that is not made clear from the title, and it should be, is that this is only part one of longer story. If you go into this with that realization, then you may not be disappointed. If you are fan of Quentin Tarantino, you may like this movie, but lower your expectations.
Moonfall (2022)
Ludicrous, but fun!
Yes, the plot is absurd. (Take every sci-fi and disaster cliche, and throw in the angry child and neglectful parent portrayal) Yes, the "science" is nonexistent. (Show a photo of Carl Sagan for cred and acknowledge Elon as the space hero) Yes, the acting is awful. (Fowler's ex-husband delivers every line with a smirk as if he knows how bad it is) ( And yes, the special effects are sometimes not so special. (The debris field in space is straight outta 80's Asteroid video game). But just wait! Ten years from now, this will be a great, enjoyable rainy Saturday or snowy Sunday morning movie, similar to Journey to the Center of the Earth or The Time Machine.
My Stolen Life (2022)
Ugh.
Where to start? A '70s ABC After School Special has better acting and dialogue than this. The plot makes less sense than a Scooby Doo episode. (My apologies to Scooby fans.) And when the big reveal rolls around in the last act, you'll be wishing you'd spent the last 90 minutes scrubbing your bathroom instead of watching this tripe.
Brainstorm (1965)
Not what I expected
This was a pleasant surprise! I went into the movie expecting standard noir, which I enjoy greatly, and it started thus. I was delighted by the multitudes of appearances of old generation stars, as well as many who were just starting their careers. The two leads, Francis and Hunter, are excellent. And then the story starts spinning off into unexpected directions, creating a film which seems much more '70s than '60s. I quite enjoyed this!
Building Off the Grid: Floating Castle (2019)
Just a commercial
How BOTG can get away with calling this build "off the grid" is beyond me. It's built in an industrial dock in Miami by a corporation! Additionally, on-line sleuthing quickly reveals that the Stephanie and Conor not only had nothing to do with the build, they also never owned the structure when it was finished. The episode is just a commercial for the builder.
Yes, the structure is interesting and beautiful, but this build shouldn't be on this show.
