Nothing Like the Sun (2018)
What an Ending!
Impressed that an indy period piece was pulled off on this scale with such a small budget. To me, the best part was the acting. Great performance by the lead. Overall, thought provoking, honest, and real.
86 Melrose Avenue (2021)
Impressive Direction
The moving one shots and rushed paced kept the tension high and I definitely couldn't wait to find out what would happen in the ned. I felt that was a really impactful moment near the end with Travis and Avi as well.
Most importantly, while watching it made my mind consistently think about if I was in this situation in real life. Like it intrigued me to live/experience this in reality. Which is one of the best compliments I feel for a film.
When Life Keeps Getting in the Way (2014)
Impressive Indy
You have to appreciate a truly independent film, one that clearly comes from the heart of the filmmaker. A sincere story about how our past traumas manifest in our current lives no matter how many years later. The drama pulls as your heart strings, and the comedy makes you smile ear to ear. And in one way or another we can all relate to it!
Chief Zabu (1988)
A social-political satire following the journey of a real estate developer seeking status and money by exploiting a newly independent island in the Pacific.
On pure critique; it's uneven, plenty of jokes don't hit, and some very major plot events come out of nowhere. In addition, the craft of filmmaking itself is certainly independent. But, does all of this mean it's a bad thing? There once was a time when every movie in the commercially released theatrical system was not exactly the same as they all are today. That's why you go see independent cinema, because they offer a unique entity that the generic studios are not putting out. This film is not safe, not conventionally structured, outlandish at times, and on all accords not apologetic about it. And that is a beautiful thing. I applaud the filmmakers for going for it.
The lead and main supporting play off each other very well, and we even start to root for these lovable losers. Reminiscent of some great Jim Belushi films of the late 80's/early 90's, it's darn funny, and worth the price of admission!
