Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
One of the best entertainment products ever
It's also one of the best pieces of pop art ever. Taking everything that was good in the first Spider-Verse and amping things up by a lot.
This warrants several re-viewings as there is just so much detail and at times such a furious pace, so well timed comedy, a truly *specatcular* sound and music mix as well.
Imaginative is the main word for it, but the film also has amazing soul and a lot of poignancy, also themes of parenting resonated in the adult in me. The inner kid was grinning like a fool the whole time as well.
Don't miss this one out on the big screen, definitely worth leaving the comfy home cinema for!
The Sandman (2022)
Amazing, and gets the soul of the comic across delightfully well (edited)
(See addendum below) 4 episodes in, very happy - In truth it would so far be 9/10, but there are so many "agenda" low reviews that I feel it my duty to offset them with a 10. So far very satisfied with the adaptation, and as it follows the comics quite closely we all know that the first story arcs are just the story learning to walk. There is so much good to come, and already it's evident that they will be able to pull it off. The end of e4 was amazing, can't wait to continue tonight!
Edit: I've now watched it all. From the end of e4 to e6 was the high point (e5 one of the best things I've ever watched and e6 was just as beautiful as on the page), but it was all worthwile so the 10/10 stays. And yes, I love the comics since the 90's - not 100% on all of the remixing of Doll's House (e7-10) but in the end it worked and setup the second season perfectly. I'll repeat, the first 2 books were just the series finding its direction. There's going to be some amazing stuff going forward, I'm sure (as the comics got exponentially better and the team has proved they can adapt them)!
(Oh, and from the weird comments by alleged comic fans: IMHO all the substituted "appearances" of the cast worked perfectly. As far as their altered "preferences", maybe re-read the second book?)
Years and Years (2019)
One of the best shows ever! Beautiful, terrifying, brilliant.
Watch it while it's still "just" fiction! Scary in how convincingly everything happens, the concept is so much more than just "Black Mirror". Amazing script, amazing editing, amazing actors, amazing music.
Storytelling at it's finest and a true wake up call to all of us.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Over 9000!
One of the best Marvel movies ever. The ending "power level" and accompanying visuals gave me tears of joy, first time ever the movies *actually* hint at and approach the cosmic power levels of the comics. Maybe they could now bring in something like Galactus believably! Great 90's references, great jokes for us old farts (personally, 40 and male) lovable cast, nice to see strong female heroines too!
Chappie (2015)
Very good
Brilliant, touching. Interesting study on the development of a sentient mind in fast-forward mode (like many AI experts are saying it could go) Though liking and understanding Die Antwoord does help appreciating it, I'm sure.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Very good despite the problems in the plot. Very nice visuals.
If you're a fan of sci-fi or cyberpunk, just go see this film. Absolutely brilliant visuals, and a brilliant retro-futuristic world. Die-hard anime fans might disagree, but thankfully I didn't remember too much from the original and could watch it with an open mind. The plot has it's problems but really nothing worse than a ton of "better regarded" Hollywood releases, and at least to me the great feel and good casting made up a lot of it. Just give it a shot, it deserves it!
Note, I might regard it as an 8 or 8 and a half but I definitely want to see it rise from the ill-deserved 6,9 score that it currently has, hence the 9.
