Inner Worlds, Outer Worlds (2012)
Semi-interesting Spiritual Gobbledygook Wrapped in Illlogical, Unsupported Statements backed by Nothing but the Creator's Flights of Fancy
Alright. I'm not above films with loose, poorly defined theses and/or those that attempt to explain complex phenomena using esoteric jargon and reasoning. I'm cool with non-traditional, difficult to follow cinematic experiences. But this claptrap had more circular arguments, nonsensical statements, and unrelated digressions than the magnum opus of a 12-year old high on model airplane glue. The "author" of this veritable cacophony of spiritual principles seems to feel it's appropriate to apply pseudosxientific concepts and arguments related to bona fide mathematical principles (like fractals) to every known faith without once telling us his/her purpose for doing so or attempting to explain the mathematics behind it. It's as though two dudes in their grandma's basement - after smoking hella weed - tried to mash the biggest, brightest visuals they could find with the most profound spiritual concepts they could muster, all without any direction or reason for doing so at all (other than to elicit a half-baked "far out" from like-minded space cadets.) If you want something that'll take up airtime and fill your visual field with trippy pics, throw this on. But if you're looking for something that'll test the limits of your spiritual knowledge and indeed your common sense, leave this going show for the stoners.
Last American Horror Show: Volume II (2022)
If you like cheese, this is limburger.
If you're looking for something polished with crisp editing, well-chosen music/sounds, memorable dialogue and Oscar-worthy acting, keep walking. But if you're in the mood for some cringe-tastic cinema that could have been filmed by your cousin on his cell phone using his friends as actors and their grade 11 drama project script, this one's for you. I had high hopes for this anthology-like film (and I use that term as loosely as humanly possible) but things got a little unbearable by the fourth or fifth story. Maybe it was the scene when I could actually see the actor chomping down hard on a blood capsule that prompted me to write the present review, but regardless, consider this fair warning: Unless you're high AF with a bunch of your friends willing to point fingers and laugh at this trainwreck (and if you have more than a dozen brain cells) you'll likely want regret pressing play.
The Changeover (2017)
A different, well-crafted film with a haunting atmosphere that lingers
Believe the critics on this one. Even if the average IMDB viewer only gave this film 6/10, it's worth far more. It'll creep into your brain and give you the shivers for a while. Great acting and superb fantasy/thriller storytelling.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Superb
Like life itself, this film runs the gamut from gut-wrenching tragedy to the absurdly comedic, asking audience members to view it through both the innocent/playful of eyes of a child and the profound lens of the sage. At times ridiculous, at others acutely insightful and poignant, Jojo Rabbit teaches us that life is unpredictable, weird, meaningful, sad and joyous at once. I highly recommend this 1 hour, 48 minute cinematic melange of events and emotions.
