Killjoy (2000)
So bad it's good? NO!!!!
Awful awful stuff.
Doesn't even fit into the so bad it's good or funny category. Everything is abysmal, story, characters, acting. The movie is actually quite short but succeeds in managing to feel like 3-4 hours.
Watch anything else instead!
The Green Inferno (2013)
My second favorite Cannibal Movie
Not every movie has to be a cinematic masterpiece to be enjoyable. I'd been looking forward to watching this one since it's release. I'd missed it's theatrical run due to family commitments and had largely forgotten about it until it was added to Netflix a couple of days ago.
It's hard not to enjoy it in my opinion. Yes, the acting is crap but who watches Horror movies of this particular type studying the acting? At it's very core this is an old fashioned adventure movie, the plot is basic but effective. The pace of the film works really well and I did find it to be quite tense and thrilling hoping that at least one character would escape.
The movie also delivers on the gore front, the color is absolutely glorious. Vibrant greens contrast with the blood red of the tribe to create a sickening feeling.
A final point before I wrap up, I see a lot of comments about the message behind the movie. Slacktivism etc, don't get bogged down in all that. We don't need a profound reason to find a bunch of 20 somethings stranded in the jungle and captured by cannibals, just accept it and strap yourself in!! In the grand scheme of things I think I enjoyed this more than the likes of Cannibal Ferox, Jungle Holocaust etc. Not as good as Cannibal Holocaust though.
Galaxy of Terror (1981)
Just a bit of Fun
I seen this movie as a youngster and thought it was great craic and watched it again recently on Netflix and have to say that I enjoyed it just as much as an adult.
It was obviously made on the cheap and a lot of the acting/effects leave a lot to be desired but when a movie is fun it's fun. It doesn't outstay its welcome and the pacing is excellent, at no point does it seem to lag.
If cheesy sci-fi is your thing with tons of gore and crazy monsters well then you can't do much worse than this B movie classic. P.S. the recent Blu Ray release is excellent!!
Anton (2008)
A horror show.
This movie is inept on so many levels I don't know where to start.
First of all, I appreciate it's an independent release and must have required some effort to get it funded and shot etc. but that's about the only kind thing I could say.
Ordinarily if an Independent movie is poor there's at least something to hook you in, or the embryo of a good idea in there somewhere, something that leaves the viewer at least saying that it had potential but not here.
The movie is not that long, around 90 minutes but by the end you'll feel like you've spent an eternity in purgatory. The story is muddled, confusing and meanders from one location to the next. Acting is atrocious, how Gerard McSorely got roped into this will go down as one of the great mysteries of our time. The worst crime of all though is that at no point did I care about any of the characters involved.
I'm an Irish citizen, and the troubles as they were referred to here should provide plenty of inspiration to would be film makers who surely could be able to come up with something a little more exciting than this?
