Men in Black: International (2019)
Purposeless movie.
We watched the movie as three people. One left halfway through, one was one his phone most of the time and then also left. I watched the whole thing and it is one of the worst movies I've seen in my life. There are so many things about it that are off. 70% of the movie are useless scenes that seem more like a compilation of funny moments and not like a movie with an actual plot. Power dynamics are completely off. Nothing about the movie is serious. Characters are joking and at times it feels more like impro theatre than a movie about saving the world. There is purposeless CGI. Over all, the entire movie feels purposeless. That's the word that describes it best.
All the 10 star reviews state the same thing, that it's "great fun" and "for the whole family".
Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)
Unexpectedly great
The power lies in simplicity. Not just with sushi, but with this documentary also. Very simply produced. The focus is on the chefs and their sushi. I did not believe I could enjoy this film as much as I did, but somehow it touched me really deeply. I could watch it a second time the day after I first watched it with the same wonder and awe. That's rare.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Bad.
Only watched it because I just watched Doctor Strange and that film was ok.
Well, this one is pretty bad. Not a single fight in this makes sense. I honestly have no idea why this movie was even produced. Was really boring, too.
But damn, the fights... People are switching sides the entire time, extremely confusing especially because there was no reason to fight. And then, when they fought, it just felt like a showcase of special moves.
Some of the avengers don't want to be avengers anymore because they've caused too much destruction? Sure, let's fight the rest of the avengers who don't agree with us and cause a ton of destruction.
Wasn't even fun, but not dark either, just confusing and pretty ludicrous.
Doctor Strange (2016)
If it wasn't for the visuals...
This would be a 5-6/10 max.
First of all, I had already sworn off watching Marvel movies because I found them to be ridiculously similar. Same general plot, same structure, same pacing, same jokes, same fights (especially those get boring quite fast).
But Doctor Strange promised to be different and visually inspiring.
As far as the visuals go, 100% yes. They're really creative, interesting and next level, actually, they kinda define the film, which is why I am happy to rate the film higher than it should be, just because it was more than visually appealing to watch.
In terms of being different, well, kinda.
I really liked where things were going in the beginning (spirituality, astral projection, calming the mind, healing body through soul) because these are all real phenomena, even though wildly different from how they're portrayed in the movie, obviously.
But Cumberbatch, who is a very fitting Doctor Strange, hardly changes during the entire film. I would have loved to see a more dramatic character arch. It was said that he should connect with his soul and let go of his huge ego in order to gain these powers. Well, he gained all sorts of powers but didn't seem to connect to his soul or let go of his huge ego. He still appeared pretty awkward after what one could call his awakening.
Big negative is the villain(s). Felt no connection at all towards them. Didn't care at all about them. Marvel really needs to up their villain game.
Over all it was entertaining to watch, especially because of amazing visuals and the eastern influences, but I would not watch it again.
Waking Life (2001)
If I had to pick a film to describe me...
Brilliant film. I do feel like only certain people will enjoy it though. If you are a lucid dreamer or if you have contemplated the meaning of existence for some time, this may be for you.
In my opinion the entire film is quoteworthy and also it is one of the few films that I'd easily watch directly again after just having watched it.
Technique, music, idea, narrators, filmography, all simply fits. This film is a masterpiece!
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Good underlying story executed so horrible that I can't express it in words
I was literally googling whether I was watching an extended version while watching it. It is unimaginable how anyone could've thought all these pointless scenes would make up a good movie. At times I felt like I was watching a funny clip compilation instead of a part of probably the most well known space opera.
Basically the film is a bunch of pointless characters, pointless scenes, pointless story elements, things that just don't make sense at all and within all that there's an interesting story going on that seems to not have been the main focus of the film. In the first hour there were maybe 5 minutes I found worth watching.
This was THE FIRST movie ever where I started skipping around because the scenes were so pointless. And even worse, I did not miss anything.
What makes this so sad is that the underlying story is good and eg Kylo's development & connection with Rey is quite interesting. There are some intriguing scenes and concepts and I was actually paying attention to the last hour of the film. The film could have actually been good! Which makes it even worse that the producers have failed so miserable.
(Also there's an attempt to create a character as insufferable as Dolores Umbridge in the rebel leader)
If you do decide to watch this movie, watch it for free online, because this does not deserve to be supported monetarily.
Vegucated (2011)
Good film for non-vegans & everybody who would like to learn about why veganism is 100% NECESSARY
At first I thought it was kind of cringy, the first couple of minutes just felt weird and I almost stopped watching. But after 10- 15 minutes the film starts to get more analytical, scientific and gets into more detail. That's when it gets really interesting. The information is very digestible, that's why I think this film is one of the best for people who don't know anything about this topic yet. As I am a bit more knowledgeable, I did not learn too much new stuff, but the images of how animals are being treated made me break down and cry my eyes out. Good reminder, as I tend to forget just how bad animals are being treated.
The film is more about the ethical parts of being vegan and - though it touches on them - less about the environmental and personal- health related parts.
If you have not watched any films on veganism or animal-products, I definitely recommend watching this film. If you do know all the basics you can easily skip this one.
Victoria (2015)
Different in a good way. Draws you in like no other film.
I've watched this film because I heard that it was a complete movie shot as one take and I got really intrigued. Still I did not expect too much, since how much can actually happen when there are no cuts? How many different scenes can there possibly be? I thought it would be some "avantgardy" film that would be interesting and different, but lacking in other aspects. Oh boy was I wrong! The film takes some time to get going, but the fact that it all is one take makes it interesting enough to not be bored by it. I was constantly in disbelieve how well this one-take thing was going. It all felt like you were actually there, looking at everything that's happening. It takes quite a bit until the story finally drew me in enough so that I could stop marveling at the amazing camera movements. Then something amazing happens. Because it all is shot in one take, almost in a POV kind of style, you get drawn into the story more and more, until you almost feel like you're actually there. You empathize rather quickly with the main characters, just because there is nothing else going on - no cuts, no secondary stories that could take your focus away from the main story. I don't want to write any spoilers, so I'm just going to say that the story is pretty well thought out and as your knowledge about the setting of the film increases, all of the character's action begin to make sense. Let me just say that - because I got SO drawn into the story - I went through a great number of emotions during the film. At the end I could not stop myself from crying and literally felt super miserable. Of all movies I have ever watched, this is the movie that evoked the strongest emotions. Absolute masterpiece and the camera operator deserves all prices in the world.
