The Boys from Brazil: Rise of the Bolsonaros (2022)
It's Done!
Excelent! The documentary has successfully demonstrated how Jair Bolsonaro Governament has been a complete disaster, threatening democratic rules in Brazil, laws, Human Rights and even the sanity of Brazilian People. With misinformation and allegations that are not supported by facts, he tried to hide the disaster that his administration has brought to Brazil in all areas, including the environment. To top it all off, he disrespected Brazilians who still suffer from the over 700,000 deaths caused by Covid's mismanagement of the pandemic by defending the use of treatments that have been proven to be ineffective.
Nevertheless is now Done! From 2023 on, Brazil will be a democratic country again, with the election of Lula! Thank God!
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Am I been fooled or what?
Maybe the director and the producers just want you to give up right on the first episode. Maybe they want you to get upset because you're expecting somenthing like a traditional good stuff coming from hbo and not a soap-opera sort of thing. Also, maybe there is something else underneath all that ordinary, unrelated, pointless talk and talk and....talk. Ultemately, maybe they want you to forget that you are watching the remarkable Kate Winslet in her first major TV role. Considering all that I'll give a second chance next week.
Hunter Hunter (2020)
When stupidity knows no limit.
Do not be fooled by the beginning of the flick which might sounds pretty atmospheric and evokes excitement and suspense. Sorry to say it won't last more than 20 minutes or so, until things start going really bad. Espeacially when the only convincing character of this mess fades away. Seriously, I cannot think of nothing that I would recomend this. A movie which everyone involved show a high degree of stupidity and recklessness, doing things nobody would ever do in their right mind. Besides, there is a total lack of explanations -at least the logical ones. Do yourself a favor and dig a bit deeper for better horror movies.
The Dark End of the Street (2020)
I wish I could live in the dark end of the street
So grateful I came upon this little gem, totally by luck. In a nutshel everthing that a good movie has to give without some absolutely top notch fantastic plot. It is all about character development, each more interesting than the other. So get a beer and enjoy every minute.
Relic (2020)
So you wanna something spooky. You got it.
Let's be honest. One of the major reasons we go to scary movies is to be scared. Likewise, another major reason make you give up watching is due to the overused formula. Tha's not the case here, I suppose. The devil is not only on the details. I mean, It's really there. I promise you won't pass over the dreadful and well made scenes. Also, the character development is quite good, and I found myself wholly immersed in this story.
Barracuda (2017)
Untamed child
It was a pleasure to see Allison Tolman (Fargo TV season 1) cast in this little indie gem. Although this time I have to give all the props to Sophie Reid with his wild and visceral character. So in the movie, this two sisters grew up in different places and now are meeting for the first time, sharing memories of their peculiar musician father, now deceased. The problem is that as both getting to know each other, you feel some sort of mortal suspense and even danger going on. Mainly because of Sinaloa (Sophie Reid) who has a mysterious behavior that ranges from sweetness to aggressiveness. (Maybe savageness is the best definition. You'll see.) On the other hand, there are moments where she looks quite adorable, like when she is performing gigs at pubs and streets. I wrap it up saying that the movie is all about the psychology of the characters that take us into an uncomfortable territory with some well-placed surprises in the end.
Violet (2014)
Maybe plot-less. Not pointless
Actually, who am I to call the movie as "plotless" once I have no idea of what was the director's purpose. For that reason, I decided to dig up some information about the concept and I came across with an interview where Bas Devos describe the particular style of filmmaking:
"I am attracted to something on the border of the narrative—where the story ends, but the image and sound linger. This almost "dangerous" moment, where seemingly nothing happens, but the audience connects to the world as seen or heard by the filmmaker. I suppose that's the moment when the most interesting questions arise."
As the movie goes on, you start to realize that there will be no 'big twist' or some abrupt kind of turn on the story and then you go into the mindset of the project, which is focused more in suggestions and innovation than in traditional, for sure.
Nonetheless, keep your mind open (all the time).
Hounds of Love (2016)
Take the plunge into this nightmare and be recompensed with great cinematography
First, keep in mind that the film is difficult to watch due to the intensity of the plot which portrays a truly horrific vision of a crime involving a helpless 17-year old girl. Therefore lots of violence, fear, madness and so on. However for compensate all that, you will be certainly delighted with very beautiful cinematography experience and awesome performances, featuring here the great Ashleigh Cummings which is just phenomenal in the role. There is no reason for the crimes other than the insane sexual sickness of the couple, sort of like an addiction or pure predatory instinct. Even though there is violence, it is the psychological violence that stands out the most. So do not be afraid of so much gore on the screen because It isn't necessary. Believe-me.
Get Out (2017)
Out of the ordinary movie experience
Despite all the noise about racist, genre, etc..I think you should give a chance in watching this one, because at the very least you will be surprised with a great movie that comprises horror, suspense, dark humor and the most important, originality. I mean, forget the ghosts, the serial killers and all the most common clichés and free your mind for a refreshing movie experience. Plus, there is a comic relief with Lil rel Howery and his amazing character who definitely stole part of the show. Actually I cannot believe that it is a debut horror movie, because it is so good. I hope that the director keeps living up to the hype in future projects.
Lamb (2015)
Lamb - The Devil is in the details.
My most honest feeling while watching this movie was apprehension and the second one was discomfort. The movie naturally provokes an inevitable sense of morality on the viewer because what was supposed to be an unlikely and harmless relationship has turned into something else entirely. There is no doubt that the message is not intended or implied to express sexual connotation but at a certain point, when things really starts to get tough and conflicts come up in an unforeseen manner, the situation opens an opportunity for even more prejudice. A mix of feelings like love, jealousy and even anger portrays a limitless scenario to escalate things up who knows to what next level. In my point of view the movie can be summarized roughly as follows: Middle-aged man bogged down in midlife crisis affects considerably childhood from an 11-year-old-girl.
