Joker (2019)
Joker - masterpiece or overhyped?
To begin with, surface fans of the Batman dc universe won't be caught by this movie. Neither will those who want an explanation as to who the real joker is. This is one take on the myth. Phoenix does portray this version very well, however the storyline is rather simple. There are no complex revelations, no deeper insights into the mind of the joker. Being a product of abuse and mistreatment plus him stopping to take his medicine and Chance created this entity. Sure it is an impressive piece but overall it is a pretty predictable movie.
Murder Mystery (2019)
Orient Express meets Comedy...
Finally a rather good movie from Mr. Sandler again. Whilst one is intrigued to figure out the mystery, the movie is packed with puns and marriage wisdoms. Especially for couples a rather good watch for rainy evenings. Very entertaining and funny.
Enjoy!!
Game Over, Man! (2018)
Action packed Comedy with workaholic attitude.
Every since Adam Sandler has tried to make funny action movies I am a little worried as to what comes out next.
However, this time the trio infernale from the Workhalocis did not disappoint. Set in a hotel where a celebrity is held hostage, the heroes are forced to act up and save the day. With a lot of cameos of comedians and actors alike this movie is not only entertaining but also exciting. With a touch of half baked, tropic thunder, lethal weapon and die hard this movie is foremost for fans but also for everyone who likes a good laugh.
It is over the edge sometimes here and there but that's exactly what you want to get. All low ratings are mainly from people not getting the sense of humour.
Well done boys. I wanna watch "Game Overboard"
Fletch (1985)
A journalist with wit and style goes to solve the riddle
Classic! In this movie about a journalist who wants to uncover a drug smuggling ring at the beach of LA, Chevy Chase shows his comic genius. Taking on different personalities throughout the movie this is entertaining and smart at the same time. Whether it's the dealing with the Underwoods or the police chief, his boss or any person he encounters, Fletch makes it happen.
One of the best movies ever - there is a second film, which is not as awesome but still watchable.
Hope that helps and convinces you to watch it...
Wheelman (2017)
you remember "Phone Booth"? Kinda like that...
The story is simple: The getaway driver is forced to do tasks after a robbery has gone terribly wrong. Eventually his family gets drawn into it too which is supposed to intensify the tension. So far so good.
Whilst the story is not new and not even intriguing, the only good thing might be the simplified camera perspective. The movie does not have many highlights and even the few action sequences are only noticeable since the rest of the story is pretty much a car and a telephone. Whilst in the movie "Phone Booth" there actually was an unpredictable plot, here the viewer pretty much can guess from start to finish what will happen in the next few minutes.
The movie seems to forcefully provoke tension and action but due to the poor script one gets easily bored after the first couple of calls. Frank Grill tries his best but he simply has nothing to work with.
Overall it is a movie that will be forgotten in no time and rightfully so.
Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond - Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton (2017)
Interesting ego trip lacking real depth
I'd like to start by saying that I find the concept of the movie rather intriguing. Showing the parallelisms between two exceptional comedian who in their own way revolutionized the way we perceive comedy today. Having been a fan of both comedians I was looking forward to this movie. Unfortunately the movie couldn't stand up to my expectations. Firstly, one does barely get to see the transformation of Carrey. The viewer is thrown into the action accompanied by an almost preacher like Jim Carrey who retells his tale which is barely connected to what has happened back then. The movie is merely a documentary without any insight or revelation. Whilst the scenes are well chosen, if one knows the movie, the entire aim of this documentary is not obvious.
The documentary is rather a piece of art itself than it is a proper movie.
F Is for Family (2015)
Either you are a dad, know a dad or will be a dad ... this is revealingly excellent!
For fans of the comedic genius Bill Burr this is a piece of heaven in an animated version. If you have seen him perform on stage you know his energy which is beautifully transformed into the struggle a rather normal family has to deal with on a daily basis. Teenager problems, relationships, the hated work environment and temptation, it is all there - dissected via the sharp scalpel of comedy.
This work of art hopefully will be around for a bit. Simply hilarious and quick witted.
Batman: The Killing Joke (2016)
Not quiet the novel but great nevertheless ...
Being a huge fan of every comic concerning the Joker, the epic novel The Killing Joke was bound to be turned into a film. Whilst the story differs from the original, to my mind the film pays credit to the work. Whilst the killing Joke deals with one possible origin story of the Joker, it also deals with the version of the Joker who clearly goes far beyond the criminal crazy the average ready/viewer is aware of. The movie takes a closer look into the mind of the insane, which can not be compared with the dark night trilogy or earlier versions. The Joker has fascinated millions of readers and people around the world and will continue to do so. You won't be disappointed if you give it a try...
Hope that was helpful!!
Solace (2015)
Great performance - just missing the last bit
if you are into mystic crime drama, this one is for you.
A psychic Anthony Hopkins teams up with the FBI in order to find a serial Killer.
Whilst the serial Killer is on the run, the motif of his murders becomes more and more obvious and it is not all as it seems.
The further the investigation moves along, the more we get an insight into the characters emotional constitution and more than one truth is revealed.
With epic pictures and great camera features this movie is a neat crime drama.
It is lacking the tense interaction between the main characters for they barely have time for it. The concept is great, the acting is great, it just doesn't reach its full potential.
Nice to do some work whilst watching it though....
Legend (2015)
One of the best Gangster movies in recent years
To keep it simple:
if you like movies like Casino, Godfather and Once upon a Time in America, you will like this one too.
Tom Hardy portrays English Mobster twins during the 50s and 60s. Whilst one would love to see more intense moments between the two, each character is drawn out with a love for details, whether it is in writing or acting. The side stories are good, no real surprises there but again the setting and realization of the 50- 60s London is simply great.
Although I was expecting more interference from other Mobsters, it was definitely one of the best movies in 2015 and if you want a clever crime-drama - this is it....
400 Days (2015)
it could have been so much better
The classical setting of a solitude experiment in space. 4 aspiring astronauts voluntarily get exiled on a pretended space mission in order to evaluate the effects of stress related isolation.
so far, so good.
But whilst one is longing for anything to happen really, one gets the occasional hallucination moments already overused in other movies. Eventually they leave the rather secure environment of their "ship" to find a dystopian outer world with random strangers willing to kill them. The end is rather lame and unsatisfying since the "suspense" is conserved via an open ending.
It is sad, that although the actors surely brought potential to the movie, none of it was used. Even for a low budget fill one gets the impression that the film was too rushed, the plot was't fully developed and the concept behind it was non-existent. It has the feel of people adding random ideas to another in order to meet a deadline for a movie....
