I dina händer (2024)
Depicts the hard reality in Sweden
Regardless whatever political view you may have, you will likely agree that this series describe the current gang violence problem in Sweden painfully well. Young kids who are trapped in suburbs and sucked into the gangs, either because they don't see anything else, or that they are simply too afraid to say stay out. A law enforcement system, that tries to nail down the rotten apples who use young kids for the dirty work, but too often fails. Fiction, yes indeed. But some parts are painfully real. What the series does best is that it helps the watcher to realise that 1) the bad guys don't have any specific skin color and 2) there is no quick fix.
Marco Polo (2014)
Very generic action with questionable historical relevance
Generic in the sense that they show nude women, they copulate, they talk, they talk, they kill a few, they fight, they copulate some more and on and on.. What's wrong with producers these days?. Marco Polo had one of the most interesting life stories but still the whole story is trashed with senseless sex and nudity. Kind advice to Netflix .. if I want to see sex in excess, then I can watch an adult movie.
Babylon Berlin (2017)
Sherlock Holmes with an early Nazi era touch
This is a very binge-worthy series, the atmosphere is built up in a very credible way and the acting is superb. Please note that it requires full attention to not get lost. And whatever you do, keep the german language and live with the subtitles.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Horror movie ?
The most horrible is that It stole nearly 3 hours from my life that I will never get back. The whole thing is more like the scary movies with Jason and a pitch fork or a chain saw or whatever, than anything that resembles King's psychological horror. In the end it just becomes laughable .
Angel Has Fallen (2019)
Generic action movie
This belongs to the "ground hog day" movie genre. You definitiely know that you have not seen it but somehow you know the plot almost from the beginning. You have the die hard hero with some personal problems, the understanding wife, the villain, lots of explosives, more ketchup than all Tarantino movies collected, extreme body count, a recycled scipt from another action movie. All in all watchable but also a very forgettable movie.
Godless (2017)
Kurosawa's seven samurai with a different touch
Overall a real good old western with villains, heroes and cowards.. and horses. The dialogue is entertaining and the script is best described as dark humor with a mix of tragedy.
Atlantic Crossing (2020)
Well worth a watch, but look up the real story
As many have noticed, this story takes the "inspired by true events" a bit too far on occasions. But still I recommend watching it as it gives another side of the grim events more than 70 years ago. I find the acting credible and good but as said.. the historical correctness is highly questionable.
Tunna blå linjen (2021)
Hill street blues, Malmö edition
I was stuck in front of the TV when Hill street blues was aired. Tunna blå linjen is in some way similar. Some of the characters are likeable, some not so much, just as in everyday life. The police action looks very credible and is very educational, for instance one learn that there is always a reaction on the action. Highly recommended.
Red Dot (2021)
Deliverance meets Leif and Billy
... skip the pig.. but add a little Hateful eight. This movie is so unbelievable stupid. As I am a swede it is proper to say, sorry in advance if you was lured to waist 2 hours of your life on this drivel. The script is just so stereotyped. No, not all people outside Stockholm behave like toothless morons. If filmmakers want to mock us who live in the north, then please mock us with class.. And no.. you don't freeze your ass off and get frostbites when it is quite apparent that it is just few degrees below zero (celcius).
Cop Land (1997)
Action in Springsteen land
I have watched this movie twice. Really enjoy Stallones acting as he makes his role completely outside his traditional macho style roles. The movie is both slow cooked on occasions and fast paced. Enjoy the scenes and the music.
Der Untergang (2004)
Must be Bruno Ganz's best performance
I guess the famous scene with Hitler having a mental breakdown has been subject to endless parodies. Still I remember the first time I saw it, I could barely breath over these three? minutes. First class acting not only by Bruno but also the other actors that managed to portray the last mad days of the Drittes Reich.
After the Wedding (2019)
Quite OK, but watch the Danish original instead
The movie as such is OK but I would recommend you to accept a subtitled movie and go for the Danish original, directed by Susanne Bier, instead. That movie has more soul into it and is sometimes painful to watch.
Le bureau des légendes (2015)
Sometimes slow cooked but with good reasons
Watching the third season and must say the series is really addictive. Besides all the praise for the credibility given in other reviews I must say that the different languages, characters that look like normal people, the scenes, all together it makes you become a part of it. A few reviewers have complained that things are sometimes slow, I see it as a necessity to be able to describe the complex characters truthfully.
Deutschland 86 (2018)
Well spent time
I grew up in the shadow of the Soviet communist era so I clearly remember many of the real incidents that the plot circulates on S2 is sometimes a bit more tricky to follow than S1 so don't doze off while watching this. The acting and cast is superb and the characters are mostly credible. Violence is rare but when it shows up it can be gory. All in all, step into the time machine and enjoy the ride and wish that we never ever go back to that era again :-)
Our Boys (2019)
Painful snapshot of an everlasting conflict
My first review, have seen the first 8 episodes and the script and the acting is 10/10. The actors communicate the agony, doubt, fear and hate that is present in the area. The story evolves slowly but that is out of necessity as it is required to understand the story. But the important thing with Our Boys is not the acting but how it shows how seemingly normal human beings are sucked into a maelstrom of hate, destruction and selfdestruction. Inbetween are trapped people who just want to live a normal life. It is a must see, not just for Israelis and Palestines, but also for all other in order to get at least a limited understanding of the complex situation in Israel and Palestine. It is a well deserved lesson for me as I have the privilege to live in a country that has experienced peace for the last 200 years.
