An intelligent, thoughtful western
12 September 2022
I really enjoyed this film. A lot of the other reviewers have said it all better than I can, but there's a surprising intelligence in the story telling. Not everything that's important to the story is made explicit in the film; you really have to understand the man to understand the story. The land is as important a player as any of the characters. The silence itself is a character in the story, in a way. After a while you can almost begin to feel what that kind of isolation might have been like, and the kinds of things that would become a lot more (or a lot less) important to a person out there.

A pandering, exploitative attempt by Amazon to recapture a lost demographic
2 September 2022
I knew better; "Amazon Original", "Netflix Original", and the like have become the mcdonalds and burger king of the film world. Still, I was tempted by the prospect of a good story about some people in the military. Instead it's a reheated leftover about how nancy pelosi and barbara walters are going to save us from the evil corporations, all while an unhinged vet fumbles around like an idiot, torturing people in the background. L cannot imagine that people actually serving in the armed forces appreciate that kind of portrayal. The best I can say is that the lead actors did a fine job, and probably didn't really understand what they were being suckered into at the time of filming.

A good war movie...better now than when I was a kid
14 August 2022
Rewatched this recently, and I liked more than I expected. It's a good war movie, with nothing subtle about it, based on a fictional scenario that the writer/director lays out up front. I think some of the other reviewers go a bit far in trying to make something else out of the film. I enjoyed the good story about average people thrown into extreme circumstances.

Personal favorite film ever made
19 June 2022
This is the one for me...the best film I've ever seen. I watch it every year around my birthday, mostly because it reminds me of the fantastic beauty that is always there in life, even if it is always mixed all the other elements. The entire film feels like a celebration of life to me.

A wonderful fairy tale for adults. Visually amazing.

Wonderful good, strange fun. Just re-watched this one, and it's even better now. The visuals and sets are all the more impressive given that it predates much of modern CGI. Probably doesn't quite do it justice to compare it to a (very) French Tim Burton, but that's the closest I can come.

Entertaining little scifi flick
25 May 2022
It's not the kind of movie that's trying to knock your socks off...but it is a wonderful example of small-budget scifi done very well. Watch if you like scifi and don't really need the big hollywood treatment.

Great if you appreciate the overall mood
23 May 2022
Just watched this one a second time. I understand why it's not rated as highly as it might be: what story is there is very hard to follow, and much is left untold. But the overall feeling of the movie does it for me...and the fantastic actress in the lead role. The whole thing feels a bit like a throwback to the better days of scifi. 20 years ago I might have only given this a 6, but it's so much better than anything being produced now.

One of a kind, and better than most
13 May 2022
Nothing this authentic and intelligent gets made anymore. I've watched it through twice...I can't imagine why it didn't run longer. It's a wonderfully fun story, and the actors are all fantastic. A+

Fun. Slow, but fun.

I actually liked this show better than Patriot. Yes, it's slow and meandering (a little too much so at times), but the writing and acting are brilliant. And it made me laugh more than most things I've watched in recent years. It felt like a revival of better days of film-making...maybe a bit like Raising Arizona.

Ruined in the second season
15 December 2021
The first season was good for the characters and small town setting: it managed to feel like a window into real small town, at least until the end. By 5 minutes into season 2, it's obvious that direction/production has been taken over by the same cooperate powers-that-be producing all the rest of the flood of sameness. It's sad to see art turned to mere propaganda time after time. It seems nothing can remain authentic past the first season, if that. Too bad.

Benson/Moorhead have lost their roots
30 July 2021
The Endless is among my favorite independent films ever. Benson/Moorhead's work up to this point has been original, authentic, and inspired. This film, however, feels like merely a calculated attempt to appeal to a targeted audience. Did you ever know someone in high school who had a genuine gift, but shelved it in order to fit in with the cool kids? The directors have done a similar thing with this film. Perhaps a 2 star rating is too low, but it's just very disappointing to see.

A good film coming from a good place
25 July 2021
This is a very good film. It's visually beautiful (in the scenes where it's meant to be beautiful) and beautifully scored. I thought every actor in the film did an excellent job as well. Some parts of the film are also ugly, boring and uncomfortable, precisely because that's what is required to portray the kind of poverty the characters inhabit. Both aspects of the film are handled well in my opinion. It's a good story: an unusual mix of fairy tale and careful realism. It reminded me a bit of the old Springsteen songs I used to listen to in college. It's not perfect, but I found it nourishing (a rare experience these days), and I'll be interested to see what this director does next.

At the time I'm writing this, reviews for this film are highly polarized. I feel that the very low reviews are attacking the film unfairly, and not honest in their reasons for doing so. It's worth watching the film for yourself, particularly if you appreciate the way that beauty and ugliness can often coincide in real life.

An excellent film; hard to watch at times.
18 April 2021
Creative film-making techniques and extraordinary acting used to give some impression of the what Alzheimer's is like. It's hard to watch at times, as it must be. Might not be a good watch for people who have experienced the real thing up close, but it's eye-opening for the rest of us. It's also a really beautiful film. And Hopkins is amazing, as always.

Beautiful and thoughtful

A thoroughly beautiful film. Wonderful attention to the little details of life, along with a reverence for the really big things in life. Would like to see more films like this getting made.

Slow, beautiful British film with excellent performances and cinematography
4 March 2021
My favorite part of the film was all the shots of the British countryside. The story itself is a nice bit of historical fiction. Every actor in the film gives a top-notch performance. A very good choice if you like quiet, slice-of-life movies.

Not worth the ugliness
23 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Vicious animal cruelty used flippantly to add some kind of edge to an otherwise soulless film.

I like all kinds of movies, but...

***SPOILER***

...having a dog get brutally beaten to death in your film just for effect isn't art, it's just sick.

***END SPOILER***

This is one of very few movies I left wishing I had never seen. Might have been of passing interest as a short film. There's simply not enough of substance or style in this movie to begin to justify the (unpleasant) experience of watching it.
