Little Man (2006)
Overlooked and underrated
It's a Wayans movie. I can't believe some of the ratings on here. Clearly, they don't understand what the Wayans do and their style.
I rewatched this last night with my boy and he absolutely loved it. I enjoyed it too. Completely forgotten most of it from the first time I watched it back in '06-'07.
It's no "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka", but it's silly enough and ridiculous enough at times to pull some great laughs. And that's the point. Ridiculousness.
I was expecting a rating of around 5.5 because I know how poorly people rate most movies, especially comedies. Everyone is an expert writer, director, actor, etc... which gives them the right to slate other work that is up to their standards.
I enjoyed it enough to easily give a 6-6.5, but based on the ridiculous ratings I feel it deserves a solid 7.
Fans of the brilliant early 90's show "In Living Color" should enjoy this. Those who enjoy today's SNL show, won't.
Proof again for me to never trust the rating on shows or movies. Read through the ratings/comments first, or don't and just watch it.
Remember when you picked a movie in Blockbuster or your local VHS/DVD rental store? Yeah, you rented some brutal movies but you enjoyed most of them and found plenty of gems. Having access to ratings like this back then would have deprived you of so many little gems or entertaining movies, if you used a rating system and didn't rent/watch anything below a 5-6...
The Whale (2022)
Slow, depressing, pointless
Honestly, all the reviews and hype about this had me anticipating a great movie. Fraser was always enjoyable in his earlier movies, even The Mummy. I made it up to 1hr 10min and just quit. It was just awful. The daughter was just ridiculous and annoying. Yeah, she had hang ups about her Dads choices, or whatever her mother told her. Who knows?
The religious kid "Thomas" keeps coming around. Why? Because Charlie needs help! Spiritual help? So he says.
Charlie's nurse or Doctor friend "Liz" checks on him everyday (I think), watching him eat himself to death. Charlie won't go to the hospital even when his blood pressure is literally as high as a Whales because he knows a visit will undoubtedly cost him 10's of 1000's of dollars, minimum (good ole US health care).
Painfully slow and boring and set in Charlies house, because everyone seems to just drop in on him and he can't really leave.
All this talk of Oscars is laughable. But we know the Oscars are a joke and always pushing a narrative. With all these gargantuan "plus size" models being pushed down our throats of late (some as big as Charlie). I'm probably going to be called "fat phobic" for not thinking Fraser deserves an Oscar for stuffing his face, crying and and wearing a fat suit.
To be fair, I made it further into The Whale than I did Black Panther. A truly awful movie. 3 stars because I made it past halfway!
Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend (2022)
A slow flat tyre
I wanted to like this but I'm going to try keep this as short as I can get away with (600 characters).
Terrible acting. Terrible directing. Just terrible.
Never in this movie did I give a crap about Ferruccio Lamborghini. He seemed so wooden. So disconnected. So selfish. So.... just so unlikable.
I know and knew this wasn't necessarily the case. The story is all over the place. It doesn't draw you in. Ferruccio Lamborghini was the underdog but I didn't care. I wasn't rooting for him, even though I know most of the story already.
Even Enzo Ferrari wouldn't approve of this if he was around today.
I almost switched off after 20-30 mins as the acting was horrendous but I soldiered on because I'm a stubborn fool, much like the real Ferruccio Lamborghini.
This movie is an insult to Lamborghini and anyone who loves a decent biography type flick.
I believe a couple of school or college kids with decent camera equipment and a loan of some classic Lamborghini's could do a better job over one weekend.
Gazza (2022)
A victim of tabloid media and being a lad
It's that simple for me. Gazza was a victim of tabloid media and being a lad. I've no doubt that he'd have been fine if the media didn't chase him 24/7. He was an exceptional talent but a soft old soul with an issue with knowing when to quit drinking on a night out. Much like most men his age. I've been a victim of this..... I still am sometimes.
It's a decent documentary with great career highlights. It all came flooding back to me just how disgusting and ruthless the tabloids were (and still are) at that time. Nearing the end of Gazza's career you can see Beckham came in. He was nowhere near as talented but better looking and he married a Spice Girl. No footballer surfed the tabloid waves like David & Victoria. They owned it.
Back to Gazza & this documentary. It feels to me like he was in a similar boat as George Best. Insanely gifted and talented but his off-pitch antics eventually destroyed his on-pitch genius. His love for Sheryl seemed to be a massive part of his downfall also. Not to mention the spawn of Satan, Rebekah Brooks, the then News of the World deputy editor (for the most part), Phone hacking scandal anyone?
Anyway, Paul was a troubled old soul who was crapped on more times than a public toilet. This is well worth a watch for those familiar with Premier League football (soccer to you Americans) in the 90's or even fans of Newcastle United, Spurs, Lazio, etc....
Well worth a watch and I'll likely watch it again, at least 2-3 times.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Violence, dark comedy, action......
This was way better than the first movie. It was unpredictable at the best of times. The body count is higher than I expected, especially on the Suicide Squad side. The CGI was great. It really stuck to its comic book roots too, which is a massive bonus. It is a comic book adaptation after all, for all you moaners and whiners. It's serious fun and while it's not perfect, it's damn good.
Stallone: Frank, That Is (2021)
The more talented Stallone.
I had no real expectations but I suppose I expected some cheesy documentary about a guy living in his brothers shadow.... well, Frank did live in Sylvester's shadow to be fair, and he was screwed over for it. It was no fault of Sylvester's to be fair. Two hard working brothers that were passionate about their art and went their own way. Had Rocky failed its possible Frank still could have reached superstardom alone, or with a band. But at the same time, Rocky helped put Frank on the map too! It's a fascinating documentary and I enjoyed it a lot. I honestly never knew about the majority of acting parts and music that Frank was involved in. It looks like he's a decent impersonator too. I found it funny when he was re-enacting conversations between him & Sly. He'd pull off the voice perfectly. Definitely worth a watch regardless of being a fan of Frank or not. There's plenty of other amazing connections Frank has had over the years that will tell you something about the quality of his talent. I'll be honest, I'm now a fan.
Unhinged (2020)
Here's my courtesy honk.....
Don't bother. This is arguably the worst movie I've watched in all my 45 years. Only ANTIFA have a free pass to cause the damage this guy does without any repercussions. The storyline is horrendous. Nothing but ridiculous decisions. Whatever you do, don't call the police until it's too late, and when you do, all the available Police will be unavailable because of a crash the guy that is chasing you just caused. Continuity is not considered in this movie either.
Oh my, how Maximus has fallen!
Shooting the Mafia (2019)
Better than any Mafia movie I've ever watched!
Bored with the constant tripe, recycled movies and average trash being pumped out at present, so I decided to turn to documentaries.
This is an absolute gem. I loved how it was put together. Never a dull moment. A little bit of an emotional rollercoaster too. This is a must see for anyone who enjoys good, interesting and compelling stories. Also anyone interested in history. Especially Sicilian mafia history.
Everyone knows something about the Sicilian Mafia (Cosa Nostra), right? But many don't know the true horrors that went on under their rule for centuries and the endless murders/executions. This film only skims the surface of some of the horrors that took place from around the 70's onwards under the Corleonesi Mafia clan.
Photojournalist Letizia Battaglia's story intertwined with the Corleonesi mafia was really well done in my opinion. It's a fantastic piece of filmmaking and had me glued. Her photography is amazing and also disturbing. Much of it she is not proud of and some photos she doesn't even remember taking. She has never had an easy life but has no regrets, it seems.
I could have watched another straight hour or two of this but I believe the story is well presented/edited in the time shown. It has opened my eyes to the director Kim Longinotto and I'd love to see more of her work.
Uncut Gems (2019)
I'm so stressed out I need a drink!
A friend (whose opinion on movies I value) recommended this. He asked me again if I watched it so I told him I would watch it tonight with my girlfriend. We literally made it one hour in and had to turn it off. I only did that for one other film and that was Black Panther (Don't get me started)
The most interesting part of the whole movie is the first few minutes and then we're in New York and everyone is screaming, almost constantly. Talking over each other. Ignoring each other. Threatening each other. And the soundtrack!!! WTF? It was like an elevator version of Vangelis. Cheesy 80's synth pop on a kids first Casio keyboard.
Sandler is like a poor mans Pacino. A screaming Pacino. Just awful. He needs to stick with comedy.... but then again, he pretty much screams and shouts in every movie so why am I surprised?
I'm having a drink now because my nerves are gone and I feel like I need to assault someone. In self defence naturally.
I'm assuming the city was nuked at the end to satisfy those that made it to the end of the movie. This would be the only way to satisfy a viewer in my opinion. Not one likeable character and all horrible people.
