The Dinner (2017)
An incompetent director. A terrible movie
Going forward, I will never watch anything "directed" by Oren Moverman--perhaps the worst director now alive. Good cast, terrible movie. The movie is totally infuriating and insulting, not resolving a single plot point, just cutting to black at the end. It's like the Sopranos' ending but without any of the quality that came before. Does the guy with the evidence, who could turn them in--turn them in? Who knows? Is he murdered? Who knows? Are the murderers turned in? Who knows? Are they arrested? Who knows? Convicted? None of the questions raised are answered. Instead of making films, the director ought to be setting pins at the bowling alley.
The Sex Lives of College Girls (2021)
Great dialogue, great stories
Mindy Kaling is a real original and her dialogue is more clever, more astute and more original than most of what's around. We've been bombarded with content, but not with quality, which is why this series is such a standout: crisp, well acted, well directed, well cast. There's a lot about college here you won't find in movies and other series. It's in a class with Enlightened (which you can find on HBO-Max) and that's high praise, indeed.
The Homecoming (1973)
Brings woman-hating to a new low
Pinter reveals himself to be a sick, twisted, woman-hating specimen of male depravity here, in a play that is an argument--a persuasive one--for putting Pinter in a strait jacket.
She's the One (1996)
Brilliant, engaging, very clever
Great writing, great acting, perfect editing and casting, subtle observations, terrific characters and sheer originality make this movie a 10. Ed Burns is a genius.
Sweet November (1968)
Unwatchable
A terrible movie with a ridiculous premise, terribly overacted by Sandy Dennis, who always overreacts and Anthony Newley who is not known to most film lovers for a reason.
Mean Girls (2004)
Brilliant. Hilarious. An Essential!
This movie captures the agony of high school and does so hilariously. The acting superb, the timing exquisite, not surprising when it was written by head SNL writer Tina Fey--who is also a character in it. It's the movie that made LIndsay Lohan famous, and deservedly so. Amy Poehler is hilarious as a stage mother. You'll smile after you see it, whenever you hear the word "fetch."
