Star Trek: Picard (2020)
An Older and Wiser Picard
I was able to binge watch Star Trek: Picard for free on CBS All Access, and, must admit, that I liked it. I was a fan of The Next Generation, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing most of the original crew, however older and fatter. The storyline was (mostly) plausible and not convoluted. It was good to see Picard back in the Captain's with a new, younger crew. I don't think I'd find another season quite so entertaining, so I will not be paying for a subscription.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Not worth the subscription to CBS All Access
I just finished binge watching both seasons of Star Trek: Discovery for free on CBS All Access. I've been a fan since the 1960's original series (so, yes, I know what happens to Captain Pike). This may be why I didn't buy the whole Vulcan back story, which was an emotional insult to Vulcans everywhere. I give this reboot a double T rating--Totally Tedious. Now it does has some of the best female characters (and actors) in and out of the universe, but Michael is not one of them. Her method acting consists of eye widening and arching one eyebrow. I found her character totally annoying and unappealing, and I wish she had traveled to the future by herself. I was also annoyed by Saru, a Data clone in voice and mannerisms if there ever was one. I won't be following season 3.
The Doctor Blake Mysteries: Ghost Stories (2018)
Women Rule!
I actually found the original series somewhat on the dull side; the new version is more lively and colorful. As an "old hippie", it's somewhat painful to relive the blatant barriers we women faced back in the day. Things are more subtle now, but they still exist. Still, I am looking forward to future episodes.
Person of Interest (2011)
No More POI? Then It's Back to Cable...
This was the only show on the "big three" that I watched on a regular basis. It was witty, thought-provoking and action-packed. I wanted to hang out with these guys! I wanted Ms. Shaw to be my BFF. And, yes, I cried during the last episode, and, yes, I worried about Bear. The ending was somewhat open-ended. We watched Reese gunned down but not actually die. Also, there was the addition of three new "vigilantes" in the previous episode. Hopefully, POI will be reincarnated on another, more sensible network (as was Longmire). Having a mature, intelligent audience should NOT be a death knell for a series. We actually have more clout and consumer power than the networks realize.
Steampunk'd (2015)
This Show Ran Out of Steam
Every week two teams of "makers" vie to create a specific room in steampunk style. None of the contestants is particularly talented, likable, or has any sense of victoriana. Despite a "junkyard" of usable stuff, few items of interest are chosen. The "makers" focus only on individual interests and have little sense of team cooperation and cohesiveness. The end result is a boring room with one lackluster mechanical feature. Every week the judges have a hard time declaring a team winner and choosing two team captains for the upcoming week. Their options are seriously limited--rooms are flawed and no one creation is a standout. If you are trying to grasp the essence of steampunk, this show will only further confuse you.
Ink Master (2012)
Ink Nastier
I love reality competition shows. I am also fascinated by the art tattooing, albeit thus far I am an abstainer. The first season was the best--huge egos but genuine talent. (My favorite did not win.) Since then the show has devolved to showcasing some of the nastiest, untalented people on TV. The number of bleeps per episode is irritating; the talent sub par. Is the industry so tapped out that this is the best it has to offer? I also wonder about the psychological stability of the human canvases, many of whom are left with truly ugly, permanent "artwork" on their bodies. In the latest episode, these canvases wanted a anatomically-correct human heart morphing into either a lion, clock or hand grenade. Really? Are they paid to do this or just guaranteed a cover-up on the series Tattoo Nightmares?
