Saved by Grace (2016)
Leaves you Better Than It found You
Now I've seen it twice. What can I say but that it leaves you with some hope and wanting to be a better man. How many cinematic masterpieces can say that?
Runnin' from My Roots (2018)
Runnin' on Empty
Sadly this movie is a real flat liner. Characters are shallow, uninteresting, and there is no arc. Story is bland. As far as bringing God into this, I can only say trite, trite, trite. This script should have been turned down for lack of...just about everything.
Christmas in Montana (2019)
Zombies Fall In °Love°
It's fortunate that I use these Hallmark "romances" to drift off to sleep when I have insomnia. But with this doozie Hallmark hits new lows, both in acting and writin.
The male lead walks through his role with a vacant stare and droopy posture throughout the movie, only to surprise us when at the very end we discover he's fallen °head over heels in love". The female lead falls in love with just a slight bit more expression, but even she demonstrates barely more acting skills that he does. It doesn't get any lower than this. The bar is now now set so low itàs laying on he ground.
As far as writing accomplishment, Hallmark drags out the very tired plot #4: failing ranch saved by big city corporate person who is there to buy, develop, or foreclose on said ranch but instead falls in insipid love with owner and solves their cash flow problems and stays permanently. This time they fail to use their prevalent plot #4a, where the old boyfriend or girlfriend shows up.
Why no spoiler warning? Well, if you watch these dogs you know the plot from the inciting incident in th Forster five minutes. You might ask why I gave a 2 star rating and not a 1? Well, since it did put me to sleep, I had to give Hallmark a break. Watch at your own risk if you're looking for entertainment.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Slow, Disjointed, Disappointing
As likeable as Clooney usually is, he even manages to fail at that. The writing fails to draw us in to the characters so that we're really not invested in any of the characters.
The pace is eternally slow without any purpose. And as the plot biforcates into two stories, we get so lost in the second plot that we all but forget about Clooney and his little friend.
In my twenties I was hired by actor Yaffet Koto to work on an indie which he was also directing. Yaffet was a very nice guy but very intense. That is where I saw for the first time that not everyone is suited for directing and starring in a feature film, which was exacerbated by having to learn to ride a hulking police Harley. This film is an example of a failed attempt at starring, directing and co-producing. I wish Clooney well in future endeavors, but regret the loss of a couple of hours that would have been better spent even watching a musical...
To End All Wars (2001)
Redemptive
Well worth the watch. Men at their worst, weakest, most desperate yet still reaching for a last bit of hope. Dearing
to do something that might transcend desperation.
The Mule (2018)
Savored One More from the King!
How could I rate Clint less than a ten? I grew up with his Rawhide character as a kid, and it just got more entertaining from there. But his last few have been wonderful. I especially love Gran Torino with its Christic self sacrifice. I think it was the most believable and even the most entertaining of all his pictures.
My biggest criticism of Mule is giving away the ending right in the log lines.
IMO it lets some of the air out of the tires before trip #1 even takes place.
The Mule was painful for me, as we watched the old, wrinkled, shuffling old Eastwood work his way inevitably to his demise. It's tough to get older and watch all those stars get to their 50s and beyond...way beyond, in Clint's case. I think we could pick a bit at this one, and find fault here and there, but what would be the point? This was a wonderful movie with a great message, no violence to speak of, and only implied sex. There is redemption as well. It was slowish, but who could notice with Clint on the screen, old age and all. In fact, the slowness could have been remedied by not giving away the conclusion with the logline! What were they thinking?
Loved to see all the great actors who rallied for the Great One. Cooper is lovable as always. Michael Pena makes a most believable and endearing character arc. And the now almost hard-to-recognize Andy Garcia lends his usual warmth to a crime boss who leads one to wonder how he ever was tough enough to get to the top of a cartel.
All in all, it's been wonderful having Clint's more recent movies as a welcomed counterpoint to the rampant darkness, violence, and twisted movie fare. This was "film" as it should be. What's left to say but, "Make one more, Clint, we love you!"
