Interstellar (2014)
What the h was that
I am a pretty fart smeller so it's not that I didn't understand this movie, it is more that everything is so far fetched and not believable. The one guy really explained to the main character what a worm hole is, like he's a third grader? Way too many dumbed down science laws cast around in this movie for me to accept it. The plot in general isn't a bad one, but what is the problem on earth? Why not explain that a little more and try fixing that? And he at the last second decides to drive his ship into a black hole then ends up outside his daughter's bedroom, then wakes up in a hospital near Jupiter? All very similar to Avatar, like almost a good story but not really. Sorry Interstellar fans. Having ships fly around black holes simply isn't possible. If you solved that problem, I'm sure you could have fixed earth first.
Movies like The Matrix, it's a wonderful life, and heaven can wait, all had some far-fetched plots butt they made sense. This is just plain stupid and lazy writing. Sharkboy and Lava Girl maybe had the same writer?
Thief (1981)
2much music
Not a bad movie, James is of course excellent in it and the story is pretty good. But wow, did this start the 80s with the ridiculous over the top music that is played way too much and too loudly?
There are many scenes where there is nothing but people building things or walking and loud obnoxious music plays for minutes, much louder than any of the dialogue. Tangerine Dream of course is an excellent band so I will blame the people who created the movie for asking them to create this soundtrack.
Great acting, but it's like Lethal weapon without the fun and good dialogue. Maybe worth watching if you love James Caan.
Inside Man (2022)
near miss
Well acted, story kind of cool, but how can the director, writer, and actors let major plot holes just be ignored? The son was losing his mind banging on the door but the whole time he had his phone? Like, duh! Then once he knew he had his phone, all of a sudden he didn't want to get rescued?
And what kind of sound-proof house is that? You can bang on the door with a hammer and nobody hears it? If he just touched the floor joist (which were exposed) with the hammer it would have echoed throughout the house. Come on folks, you can do better than that.
Seems to be a theme with netflix dramas, they obviously spend a lot of money on them but don't bother to make sure the plots make sense.
The Watcher (2022)
this made no sense...
Okay so around episode 2, the wife is done, wants out, insists that they sell. Husband argues with her, changes her mind. Fast forward a couple of episodes, she wants to stay, but now she decides that her husband is behind all of it trying to scare her into selling. How stupid does the writer think we are exactly? She wanted to sell earlier in the series and he said no.
I was enjoying it early on, thought the acting was very good. The stuff with the daughter and the alarm guy...seemed pretty awful. Added race and other stuff that really wasn't needed in this, other than to drag it out to so many episodes. Reminded me of Lost where they tried so hard to be clever, but in the end, you find out nothing. I bagged this during episode 5 when the stupidity really started.
Tokyo Vice (2022)
Really well done
While I've never been to Japan, I have eaten a lot of Japanese food. Well, I saw someone eating it once and it looked good, just like this series is good.
Okay seriously, great action, not overdone, very interesting to watch.
We Own This City (2022)
What about the other side of this?
The cops acted horribly for sure. This series was well acted and interesting. But how about going into just horrible crime in Baltimore was and still is? Yes the reaction by the cops was unacceptable, but as crazy and bad as it was, what were/are they reacting to? Surely there could be a whole season capturing the murders that happened, and why this gun squad was formed. Maybe they assumed the audience knows how bad it is there.
Certainly The Wire did a way better job of balancing everything, seeing it from different perspectives. But this series didn't accurately show what the cops were up against, and how brave most of them are.
Greatest Events of WWII in Colour (2019)
Really well done, with one caveat
I would not consider myself a history buff so I found so much of this incredibly interesting and well done. It really put things in perspective and surprisingly is still very relevant to the world today, with tensions around the globe always in flux.
However one thing really bothered me, and that was when discussing the rise of Hitler, the guy had to say "it was just like he was saying Make Germany Great Again". Did he really have to go there? The show then went on to discuss hatred of foreigners and nationalistic goals. So obviously this was yet another shot at Trump and comparing him to Hitler. Wunderbar! (not) So Hitler wanted to make Germany great again, and Trump also felt the same way about America. Is it bad to want to make your country great? As horrific and evil and insane as Hitler was, he actually did make things great in Germany again, before he became the horrible person we know him as. But to take a shot at Trump here is so beneath the creators of this show, who otherwise did a fantastic job presenting everything.
Can't Stand Losing You (2012)
Gotta Sting to know you were just the guitar player
Andy is a really good guitar player, but if you google "who wrote the police songs", you will see that Sting penned basically all of their great songs by himself. It's not even close. For the other 2 to have any jealousy or anger that Sting got all of the attention, it is just too bad, Sting is a genius, the other 2 guys are awesome but are not what made the band what they are. I wouldn't say they were replaceable but I would say that The Police could have been just as good without either of them. Regarding the movie, it just didn't capture any of the magic that this band had, and just showed Andy to be a disillusioned partier.
Homeland (2011)
Great acting, not believable
If you know the potential VP of the US is a terrorist and you have proof, you're going to allow him to go on and try to monitor him? No way. And no you can't have a cell phone in a classified meeting. And no you wouldn't have the VP and tons of high ranked people stand in front of a tall building without assuring there are no snipers in the windows. It goes on and on. You can't talk about classified stuff at all except in a SCIF.
Ozark (2017)
Almost really good
Lots of good stuff in this series, but at its very core, which is the husband and wife, I feel like it is flawed. Marty supposedly is super smart, but a smart person would never do what he does. And the wife just isn't likeable. I hate her stupid fake smile/frown that she is ALWAYS doing!
A Star Is Born (2018)
Dancing...?
Really well done movie, Gaga was really great. IMO her singing is fantastic and that's what was the best part of both her performance, and what her real persona is. Being a musician myself, the dancing and nonsense around her (both in the movie in in real life) for me is just annoying and a distraction to her real talent. I kind of thought in the movie when she went in that direction, it was a sign that SHE was going off the rails and losing her focus. Kind of like in La La Land when he was playing all the glitzy piano stuff rather than the great music. But apparently that was the movie's definition of success. That's the only part of the movie that I felt was off.
Sicario (2015)
Intense with no cheap gimmicks
I really liked this movie. It just has a different mood to it, and as the plot uncoils, I feel like it all makes sense, as to why it feels this way. I'll be off to see the 2nd offering soon.
The Verdict (1982)
Great acting, good story
After giving poor reviews for some of the recent hollywood movies (Annihilation, Black Panther), this is a movie with real characters who change over time, and an interesting story with excellent plot twists.
And kudos to the director. The two most pivotal scenes in this movie have no dialog, no words at all. It's all done with eyes and body language. Remarkable.
Black Panther (2018)
Lots of action, surprisingly boring
I wanted to like this, I've really liked many Marvel movies. I found the main hero to be boring and really nothing special. The villain was very cool, interesting, and strong. Acting was fine, special effects were fine, but I just didn't care about the characters. Then of course they seemed to have thrown subtle political jabs in there.
Annihilation (2018)
Don't go to this if your brain functions
Some interesting ideas and nice special effects about something happening...and what is decided to do about it makes absolutely no sense! It had a plot like Sharkboy and Lava Girl...senseless and meandering, with characters doing things for no apparent reason, and we're supposed to care? Even the ending left you with more unresolved questions, but we apparently are so dumb we're not supposed to ask them.
The Curse of Oak Island (2014)
sound familiar?
This show reminds me of what happened last summer, as I prepared to mow the backyard, and went on an expedition to remove obstacles. I found a sock. A sock? In my backyard? Is it maybe a sock that one of my kids removed so they could jump on the trampoline? Or...could this sock have belonged to Abraham Lincoln, whose body is rumored to have stored at the local Berwyn PA train station after he was assassinated, because they had ice? (show fancy graphics). Or...could this be the "other" sock, that famed pitcher Curt Schilling wore when he pitched in the World Series? Curt used to be in Philadelphia. A coincidence?
We brought in famed British sock researcher, and amateur harmonica player, William DeFosinoa with his sock finder 2000 to search the area for other socks. He has years of experience searching for socks, yet ironically today he is only wearing one sock as the other one is lost in his suitcase. He found several items that maybe, just maybe, are from Tutankhamun's grave, but we really have no legitimate reason to think so, other than the fact that we thought it sounded cool.
Today we follow the team of Billy and Harry Vagina, along with their nephew Cody, plus Zak Blankeyface, as we take the sock to the Nova Scotia University Paleontology department's Doctor Jules Windemere, along with assistant who just goes by "beef", to have the sock carbon dated, and have the DNA scanned. The scientist is ready to share his results:
"This is definitely a sock. Carbon dating reveals it was made like 3 months ago and sold at Target. We found a label that says Target on it right here." (Harry Vagina looks perplexed, yet he pledged to carry on, convinced there are other buried socks in my backyard.)
Next episode...a black piece of dirt, in my backyard? Could it be remnants from when King Louis XXII and the Knights of Templar had dirt brought to the United States to ward off evil demons? Or...could it be the neighbor's dog stopped by? Come back next week and find out!!!
