Rocketship X-M (1950)
My Favorite Martian..
I was a mere Spec when this fun SCI FI film came out but by 1960 I had watched it at least 10 times! Have always love Lloyd Bridges( Sea hunt) n Hugh O'Brian( Wyatt Earp) and the supporting cast with John Emery , Noah Beery, JR PLUS a SCI FI ICON - Mr. Morris Ankrum , how can you go wrong??? It's also one of the very first 50's SCI FI films, the special effects by today's standards are laughable but the story is told in a serious tone NO THREE STOOGES here! And you.gotta love the NO SPACESUITS, wearing a tie in outer space and they are dressed like they are going on a camping trip not the Moon(.or Mars!) Beautiful Osa Massen plays the only woman on board , the lady scientist, constantly being hit on by Mr. SEA HUNT!!
Overall this is a fun movie so grab some popcorn dim the lights n enjoy for this truely is a SCI FI gem!!!
Kronos (1957)
What a power March!!
Wow! Can you imagine KRONOS meeting ROBBY THE ROBOT?? What a team up that would be! THIS is a fun film starring Jeff Morrow & beautiful Barbara Lawrence, two of my favorite SCI FI actors!! A solid story about an Alien race sucking Earth's power from Atomic to Electrical! Why this solid film is not on BLU RAY or better yet 4K Is beyond me. This is a totally underrated film n I HOPE it gets a decent BLU RAY release before my Energy is sucked out by old age!!
C'MON KL or CRITERION or ARROW PLEASE remaster this gem to blu ray or 4K, we baby boomers would love that!!!! THERE are still many great 50's SCI FI films like KRONOS that need a good update! KRONOS has a solid cast and a solid story no hokey monsters in rubber suits!
It Came from Outer Space (1953)
IT CAME NOW IN 4K!!
Just when you thought IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE in BLU RAY was pretty awesome, stand aside it's now out in 4K and it looks STUNNING!! Barbara Rush & Kathleen Hughes look more beautiful than ever and the skin tone on Richard Carlson looks like you could touch it!! I love this SCI FI classic, I've seen it " improve" with AGE , from VHS, TO DVD, to BLU RAY now to 4K!! IT'S like the film was made yesterday! Even the beginning shot of entering Victorville ( Sand Rock) the jitter is 99% gone!!! The blacks are deep and the Grey's very grey and watching it on a 65" QLED TV sure is a long way from my 12" ZENITH TV back in 57!! This already is a great, fun film with Actors who really believe what they are saying and the soundtrack could not be any eerie spookey and enchanting than it already is! I am " blessed" to have a great sound system and TV which really helps bring this film to life! Jack Arnold does a fine job in directing and our " friendly Aliens" for the time- 1953- are well done. Richard Carlson one of my favorite actors is really convincing as a novice Astronomer and Barbara Rush is great as his girlfriend who over time finally believes he saw an alien ship! Great supporting cast from Charles Drake to Dave Willock! This is truely a fun and entertaining movie and maybe because I was able to first see it in.the early 50's ( I'm ancient) it holds a special place in my heart! Sooo if u can check out the NEW 4K.version you will NOT be disappointed!!!
Killers from Space (1954)
Killer Eyes- NO glasses needed!
I love Peter Graves, he was great In WHERE HAVE ALL THE PEOPLE GONE(1974) MISSION IMPOSSIBLE RED PLANET MARS , IT CONQUERED THE WORLD( 1956) BUT...KILLERS FROM SPACE..he REALLY shines!! Just the fact he can keep a straight face when looking into those BIG BULGING BUG EYES, he deserves an OSCAR!! The stock footage alone is bad enough but even his sexy wife can't save him. Barbara Bestar who plays his beautiful wife should of never let him out of the house! I love 50's SCI FI but this film needs an additional 100K to enhance special effects and get those aliens LASEK SURGERY!!! Mr. GRAVES could of saved Mankind by offering the aliens Free Vision Care!! Even throw in some Free Rayburn glasses Then the Aliens would of left Earth with a new view of Earth and we humans!! Sooo grab some popcorn put on your glasses and enjoy this fine fine SCI FI film@
Invasion, U.S.A. (1952)
Invasion USA, INDEED!!
This movie scared me to death when I saw it in 1955!! Living in San Francisco at the time and rumors that the Russians wanted to " NUKE US" I really thought an invasion was coming soon. The MESSAGE of this film is STILL relevant today, with Russia, North Korea, Iran, China threatening us on a daily basis with with today's weapons a nuclear war would end all of mankind! Remember this movie was made in 1952 NOT 2022 so the special effects are crude but the overall message is clear America must never turn its back on those who wish us harm.the thought of ANY foreign power invading the streets of America is indeed terrifying!! I love this movie it stars BOTH the Lois Lane's from THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, n IF EVER a nuclear war started God help us all!!!!!
Dimension 5 (1966)
Yes! It's out of time and into another Dimension!
WOW! Jeffrey Hunter( husband of Beautiful Barbara Rush) really rocks in this thrilling -edge-of-your-seat time travel thriller!! With the very sexy Fra ce Nuyen & Linda Ho who could not love this seldom seen gem!! Also stars James Bond mortal enemy, Harold Sakata who is truely a force to be Reckon with! Jeffrey Hunter wears this incredible time travel belt, something every secret agent should have!! Now on BLU RAY, the picture is stunning as are the women who swoon to Mr. HUNTER!! France Nuyen is absolutely stunning in her role as secret Agent Supreme and very seductive as well.
Yes this movie rocks with excitement, beautiful locations and a stellar cast! Now on Blu Ray for your viewing enjoyment! NOT to be missed!!!
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
" Didn't you ever hear of the Arlington Cemetery?
"You don't seem to know much about anything do you Mr. Carpenter"
With lines like those, how can one NOT love this great classic SCI FI film???!!!
THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, is truely one of the 1950's great SCI FI films with a solid cast starring Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe , Sam Jaffe and that wonderful Billy Gray, it's one of my most favorites right next to FORBIDDEN PLANET & IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE! This movie rocks from start to finish and it's message is even more relevant today. An Alien and his Robot-Gort Come to Earth to warn the world unless it cools its violent ways, it will cease to exist.. the soundtrack is pure perfection for this movie and the special effects for its time--1951 -- are top notch! I was lucky enough( n old enough) to watch it in the 50's and now owning it on Blu ray and watching it at least 100 times, it never fails to entertain n delight me. I am blessed to be able to watch it on a 65" screen far better than my 12" Zenith TV when I was a kid!! I highly, HIGHLY recommend this film!!
Annie Oakley (1954)
A SHOT HEARD AROUND THE WEST!
I never understand why some criticism this action-fun-show, maybe it's NO ZORRO or THE LONE RANGER, but if it helped young girls feel more confident in themselves and it took you away from the worlds problems for 30 minutes or longer, than it did a good job
Gail Davis in real life was truely good with a gun n could ride a horse better than most, not her fault those who wrote her lines were no Shakespear. I found it a very enjoyable show one must remember it was made in the 1950's NOT 2020!!.. maybe Lofty could be replaced by a better actor like Lee Van Cleft or Gene Evans or even Phil Harvey! But overall the series is decent and has a good moral lesson after each episode.
The Day of the Triffids (1963)
What a day a Triffid makes!!
The Day of the Triffids ( 1963) still not remastered to DVD OR BLU RAY, has always been for me a solid thriller. With Howard Keel &;beautiful Janet Scott & Kieron Moore this movie never fails to thrill, scare and just purely entertain you ! Alien plants that threaten mankind with their killer sting and their uncanny ability to move on their own. This is one of the better end of the world movies! The movie begins with a stellar meteor shower that unknown to those who watch it, causes permanent blindness! The world is thrown into Kaos and soon begins to unravel into insanity as these Walking, stalking, killer plants decend upon mankind. WHY this fun engaging film has yet to get a solid DVD or BLU RAY release is a mystery to.me. I can only hope n pray SOON it comes to America truely remastered with lots of extras!! PLEASE Criterion, ARROW even KL LORBER snatch up this amazing film and give it a new remaster it deserves!!!
The Wind (1986)
Terror rides the Wind
As I write this on a windless Monday on Sept. 25, the sad news of the passing of David McCallum , age 90 , comes across the airwaves. A very talented actor so I have decided to watch THE WIND, for me a solid thriller in his honor, though maybe I should watch THE MAN FROM UNCLE a series he is well known for. Well back to THE WIND a thriller starring Meg beautiful blu eyes Foster and Wings Hauser. It's a bit of a slasher thriller but not as intense as some. The beautiful Greek scenery really enhances the film and the house Meg Foster is renting is one I would love to stay at too! Wings Hauser plays the crazed killer and with the wild wind as the background I just love this very atmospheric movie!! This is the kind of film to watch on a windy, rainy nite with a fire burning in your fireplace!
So grab some popcorn and sit back for 90 mins and enjoy the wonderful thriller!!!
Hand of Death (1962)
Don't touch me!
John Agar really shines in this 62 SCI-FI/,Horror film a rare one indeed! Also stars beautiful Paula Raymond & Steven Dunn. John Agar stars as a scientist working on a special nerve gas and by accident turns him and his touch into a deadly monster! Creepy background music helps enhance this rarely seen film. Too bad he doesn't have the help & lab from his film TARANTULA ..maybe Dr. Deemer could of found a cure!! Fun n well paced movie some good scares too! John Agar was a solid actor especially in his SCI-FI films , one of my favorites next to Richard Carlson & Kenneth Tobey
Highly recommended!!
Portrait of Jennie (1948)
Portrait of a beautiful film!
This beautiful film eludes an ethereal sense of beauty that sadly escaped the viewers when first broadcast. A great cast consisting of Joseph Cotten, Ethel Barrymore, Cecil Kellaway and the most beautiful n bewitching Jennifer Jones, makes for a wonderful romantic Fantasy that tugs at your heartstrings from its beginning to its dynamic ending! One also must not forget the enchanting soundtrack hauntingly beautiful from the famed Dimitri Tompkin!! With your own imagination you too can be drawn into this movie and be wisked away to.a wonderful world where true love knows no bounds. So turn down your lights, grab some popcorn and sit back to enjoy a timeless classic that shall never grow old!
The Deadly Mantis (1957)
A LONG, LONG TIME AGO AT THE NORTH POLE..
Just when you thought it was Safe again to take that Alaskan Cruise! Here comes the DEADLY MANTIS!! Craig Stevens & William Hopper along with the beautiful and sexy Alix Talton team up to deal with a once frozen Mantis that's now become deadly.
This story comes from the talented Mr. William Alland who also produces this fun 57 SCI FI adventure and our director is the most capable Nathan Juran!!
For me, I LOVE how they start the movie with our protective Radar systems that guard our coasts and our country from any attack, many may find the intro boring but I as a 6 year-old kid felt sooo safe being in America, safe from Atomic Attack or a giant Mantis attack!! The special effects are decent considering it's 1957 not 2017 and the movie moves along quite nicely and who could not love the adorable n sexy Alix Talton??? This is a fine movie to watch it's pure escapism!! The blu ray plays very nice on my 55 inch QLED TV almost like the film was made yesterday!
For any Baby boomers or anyone who loves 50's SCI FI this is a film to watch!!
Teenagers from Outer Space (1959)
A true Blast from the Past!
WOW! How can you not love a movie with Actors name like KING MOODY & DAVID LOVE??. Another fun 1950's SCI FI Movie with corny dialog and not-so-special-special-effects yet when I saw this movie back in the very early 60's with its Disenigeator Ray guns and home made Uniforms , it was love at first sight. Add the charming Dawn Anderson and the sexy Sonia Torgeson and the movie entertains pretty good. King Moody plays the nasty Spaceship Captain along with the evil Bryant Grant as THOR, as they try to unleash on Earth these horrible Gargons( Lobsters for a better name) that will destroy the human race so they can take over our world. Derek( the good alien) falls in love with the lovely Earth girl and tries to stop their fiendish plot. All in all a fun movie especially on a rainy afternoon!
Flight to Mars (1951)
FLIGHT TO MARS! " TICKETS PLEASE "
1951..the beginning of a fun decade of SCI FI films of Giant Ants, Spiders, Robots, and beautiful women in Mini Skirts! Beautiful Marguerite Chapman and rugged Cameron star in this early SCI FI adventure where Science reality is not required just a very good imagination! Rounding out a solid cast are Arthur Franz & Morris Ankrum , two of my favorite actors as they help complete a fun story that's purely escapism for how can one journey to Mars with no space helmet and Anti-grav boots! I love this movie and was delighted it made it to Blu Ray as the FILM DETECTIVE did a great job for the DVD was not very good! Ms Chapman wears her mini skirt as well as Anne Francis did in FORBIDDEN PLANET! The story moves along at an OK pace of course the dialog is silly NO ONE talks like these spaceman but who cares?? It's a fun escape film from a simpler time and when I saw it in 1955 it felt so real and today its still alot of fun .. I highly recommend buying the BLU RAY worth having!!
So grab some popcorn and turn out the lights and enjoy FLIGHT TO MARS!!!
The Monolith Monsters (1957)
Solid as a Rock!
After many viewings I find this 1957 Science Fiction thriller that stars Grant Williams & Lola Albright a fun escape film that replaces giant spiders and Ants with giant rocks! A whole different kind of monster and if you were a kid like me in 57, a fun and believable film! The use of desert settings a trademark of Jack Arnold serves the film well in creating an eerie atmosphere and the background music fills in the rest. Here giant black rocks invade a small western town and our life saving water activates them so that they grow and cause death and destruction and must be stopped before they can take over the world! I find the cast works well together convincing in their words and actions and Grant Williams leads the cast to save the world! A most enjoyable movie so give it a try!!
Adventures of Superman: Panic in the Sky (1953)
No Panic! It's SUPERMAN!!
Yes! I graded this a " 10" for when I first watched this at age 5, in 1955, I was so glued to our 12 inch Zenith TV I never heard my mom call me for dinner! For those without being a kid in the 1950's or having no imagination, they will never appreciate the wonderfulness of this great series! George Reeves is wonderful as Superman and though Phyllis Coates was a great Lois Lane in Season 1, my heart lies with Noel Neill! What a great cast, Jack Larson as Jimmy Olson and John Hamilton as Perry White. This is my favorite episode of the series as he Flys into Outer Space to stop a menacing Meteor and in the process loses his memory!: This is where your imagination comes into play, forget trying to nit pick the science and just lose yourself in the fantasy of this wonderful episode!! George's portrayal of Superman is spot on for he treats the roll seriously without camp and when you are a kid in the 50's watching this series, you hang on to every scene! The cast works so well together and the appearance of Jane Frazee only adds spice to the story. Yes PANIC IN THE SKY is a fun episode and even watching it 68 years later it still fills me with delight! I'm happy to own it on DVD but can you imagine IF it were remastered to BLU RAY??? SUPER wishing... enjoy this episode and all rest of the 104 episodes in this series!!
World Without End (1956)
We're not in Kansas anymore, Dr. Eldon..
How I love time travel movies 🎬, let me count thy years.. here lies one of my favorite SCI FI films from the 50's starring Hugh Marlowe & the beautiful Nancy Gates , along with Rod Taylor who later stars in another Time travel film, " THE TIME MACHINE" and let's not forget the very sexy Shawn Smith and bewitching Lisa Janti or Lisa Montell To round out our cast of heroes as they deal with mutants who were created from a past atomic war. As a kid growing up in the 50's this movie always delighted me and scared me at the same time as Atomic war was very much on people's minds in the 1950's( my best friend had a bomb shelter in their backyard) for the story is about 4 astronauts that hit a time warp and end up on EARTH 500 years in the future that has been destroyed by a past Atomic war n now ravaged by mutants on the surface and the few normals living underground where the men are weaklings and the women gorgeous dressed in short skirts n long legs! The special effects are no Star Wars but it's the 1950's n I still enjoy watching this movie especially now since it's on BLU RAY!! Sooo check it out you might just find it a fun film at least a nice escape from today's horror headlines!!
Sadly on March 7th 2023, the beautiful n talented Lisa Montell Passed away, age 89. She was the LAST surviving cast member , RIP beautiful lady!!, World Without End, Long live Ms Montell n the rest of the wonderful cast@!
The Thing from Another World (1951)
STILL AWESOME AFTER 72 years!!
YES! THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD from way back in 1951 still rocks in 2023! This atmospheric story set in upper Alaska still reverberates with suspense and chills.a great cast that includes Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheriden , Dewey Martin and James Arness as the Thing! With its rapid overlapping Dialog, it's a solid thriller from start to finish. Being old enough to have watched this in the 50's, it used to scare me enough as a kid to hide under my blankets for " protection"! Howard Hawks did have a hand in directing this fine Sci-Fi but gave his friend Christian Nyby credit...but it's a true HAWKS film all the way thru. Also what makes this movie great and worth my humble " 10" vote is the music composed and directed by Dimitri Tiomkin, to me one of the Greats in movie music.
Yes THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD is truely an awesome SCI FI film worth watching especially on a cold, windy, rainy nite! Highly recommended!!
Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957)
It's Crab Season Again!
FINALLY! One of my favorites on Blu Ray and it looks Fabulous!! After many years of waiting and hoping, watching fuzzy crab monsters, Attack of the Crab Monsters looks like it was made yesterday! Richard Garland, Pamela Duncan and Russell Johnson head up a most atmospheric movie set on a Crab infested island fighting for their lives and yes their minds! This film really scared me as a 7 year old and now it's pure delight! The special effects are sub par by today's CGI but it's charm well makes up for it. Remember it was made in 1957 NOT 2022!! Great fun n highly Recommended!! The cast is now gone but this movie will live on forever! Pamela Duncan was one of my favorites she passed away in 2005. Russell Johnson was the last surviving Cast member passing away in 2014 and he is either on Gilligan's Island or returned to Crab Island! Long live Attack of the Crab Monsters!!
The Giant Claw (1957)
This is NO SESAME STREET " BIG BIRD"!!
How I love this movie, let me count thy ways! Growing up on 50's SCI FI films, this one has a special place in my heart. Besides being a fan of Mara Corday & Jeff Morrow, it takes me back to a simpler time of giant Octapuss's and giant Ants & Spiders and who could forget ROBBY THE ROBOT!! Yes the Giant Claw by today's monsters is very tacky but it has its own charm. The story moves along at a decent clip and I found the actors to be GOOD & BELIEVABLE despite what others may say. Here comes this Giant bird from another Galaxy, another dimension and only Jeff Morrow & Mara Corday are the ones who can save our Earth from a bad-Ass bird!!Sadly only beautiful Mara Corday is still with us at almost 93, and I watch this movie once a month for great memories.
So transport yourself back to a simpler time, sit back and enjoy THE GIANT CLAW!! Also now on BLU RAY thru Arrow Films!!!
It Conquered the World (1956)
When will it conquer the BLU RAY Market?
Here lies one of my favorite 50's SCI FI films that stars Peter Graves & Beverly Garland n STILL has not been " officially" released to DVD/BLU RAY!! All because of Susan Hart Who owns this and several other fun 50's SCI FI films!! C'mon Susan get this wonderful, fun film remastered to DVD/ BLU RAY before all the BABY BOOMERS are GONE! Yes the monster is hokey but has its own charm remember this was back in 1957! Less known 50's SCI FI films have come to DVD/BLU RAY, so PLEASE release this one! Lee Van Clef stars also and this would be great remastered to blu ray!! If IGNITE FILMS can remaster the 53 classic, INVADERS FROM MARS, maybe they or Criterion can do IT CONQUERED THE WORLD!!
When Worlds Collide (1951)
When Worlds Collide on BLU RAY/ NEW TV
Next to FORBIDDEN PLANET, When Worlds Collide is one of my most favorite SCI FI films! I've watched it at least 20 times but now after buying my new 65" NEO-QLED TV, it's like watching it for the first time.
The great story of an impending doom for
Planet Earth and a group of survivors attempting to escape before Earth is destroyed by another planet! Stars the beautiful Barbara Rush and handsome Richard Derrwatching the blu ray on.my new. QLED TV the colors jump out at you and I CAN almost touch the actors, the blu ray is incredible as though they made the film yesterday!! Highly recommended!!
Also..one must keep in mind, this fun film was made in 1951 NOT 2021!! Yes the special effects are no Star Wars effects but let your imagination slip back to a much simpler time when Television was New and there were no Cell phones or hand held computers..enjoy it for when it was made and you will find it a great escape film, fun n thrilling with a solid cast that sadly most have passed away except the most beautiful Barbara Rush who is now 96!!!! God bless her!
Monster on the Campus (1958)
Escape to a Simplier time
Some reviewers who knock this 50's SCI FI do not see it what it really is: A journey thru a fantasy world pure escapism! NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. But just to enjoy and escape from the REAL problems of today's world. It's NOT trying to teach a new branch of evolution or spew scientific facts galore, just an IMAGINARY story to entertain one on a journey thru a IMAGINARY WORLD!!!
SO PLEASE CRITICS..JUST ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS DO NOT READ INTO IT WHAT IT IS NOT!!
The Trollenberg Terror (1958)
More fun than an Optometrist!
I too love this movie! Pure fun, pure escapism! I grew up in the 50's and I love the SCI-FI films of this decade. Beautiful women, almost scary monsters and just a lot of fun! THE CRAWLING EYE is a lot of fun on a rainy day or nite, great atmosphere and just enjoy it for what it is A 1958 SCI FI Movie that has good pacing
and the acting is pretty solid. Just enjoy and it is a great escape film to a simpler time. Sadly those who find this film, boring or dull either never grew up in the fifty or have no imagination for SCI FI that came before all this high tech CGI stuff! Back in 1958, TV was still young as was SCI FI movies, NO CGI and not much gore just clean fun.
The actors blend well together and Mr. TUCKER does a fine job in heading off the Monsters" sad that beautiful Janet Munroe passed away so very young( 38) so much potential!! She excels in THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE" !!
Yes the CRAWLING EYE is alot of fun and one to enjoy..maybe the EYE creatures are a bit hokey but remember this is 1958 not 2023! So enjoy this atmospheric and fun film made during a much simpler time.
