One Day (2024)
Leo steals the show
Honestly if it wasn't Leo as the main lead I think I would've turned off after a couple of episodes. I really enjoyed the book and although I didn't love the film, I certainly enjoyed Anne Hathaway playing Emma and remembering disliking Dex a lot!
This series definitely puts a slightly different spin on the story, or maybe it's the actors and how they've portrayed Emma and Dex. I didn't like really Emma in this, she was overly judgmental, patronising and so negative. I was always on Dex's side whereas in the book and film, I didn't like him much....again maybe this is because Leo is such a fantastic actor in my opinion.
If you haven't read the book or seen the film, maybe I can see why some have given higher ratings but I have to agree with the low stars that the chemistry wasn't really there for me, not until the very end anyway.
Based on a True Story (2023)
Good but overuse of imaginative scenes
I watched this over two days and enjoyed it for the most part. I think the storyline is good & relevant to the obsession with murder and crime podcasts in general.
For me it's not as good as 'Only Murders' but they're different shows, I just enjoy that one more.
I can't see how the comments that Kaley Cuoco looks the same as in the shows is valid...that's her face! 😂
My biggest irritation, other than the imagination scenes (although the dog one is hilarious) is the murderers accent!
I thought the final scene was great and leaves it brilliantly for Season 2!
If you're a Jason Bateman fan I think you'd like it. You can tell he's involved and that's a good thing.
Don't take it too seriously! I liked it and will definitely be watching season 2.
The Unforgivable (2021)
I liked it!
I saw the metascore and gave it a swerve but when my bf played the trailer, we thought it looked worth a shot.
Really glad we did as I really enjoyed it. Of course Ruth is going to look depressed and glum, she's just spent twenty years in prison, misses her sister, is living in a crappy hostel and guts fish every day!? Why the fact she doesn't have make up on annoys so many people, I don't understand.
I didn't see the plot twist coming and generally thought it was a good solid movie! I like Sandra Bullock & wasn't disappointed.
On the Verge (2021)
It's different
I really enjoyed this and watched it over two days. It's different and I enjoyed the quirkiness of it. There are low level storylines running through each episode which build to the end along with what might seem random episodes where nothing really happens. It's not overly serious or a full on comedy which I liked. I enjoyed the humour and didn't take anything too seriously.
The low star ratings and comments baffle me and I don't see the the anger towards it in the slightest. It might not be for everyone but I don't understand the strong dislike for it. I've had a partner like Martin and found myself agreeing with a lot of the show. Maybe the bad reviews have taken the show too seriously!?
The Mauritanian (2021)
Watch It
Just watch it, it's brilliant. Brilliant cast, brilliant acting. I was gripped until the credits. Fantastic movie and now I'm ordering the book.
Firefly Lane (2021)
It's alright, not great and not awful.
The characters (as many have said) can be tough to connect with. I think Sarah Chalke is great but Katherine Heigl is tough to watch a lot of time, for me anyway. I personally didn't understand why they stayed such good friends and found myself getting annoyed at certain points.
The ending is very disappointing and is definitely a let down to what is hinted at from early episodes. The book sounds better.
I didn't think I'd watch Season 2 but a friend started it and said it was better than the first. She was right, season 2 is really good and very sad too. I'm glad I gave it a shot.
