In Bruges (2008)
A good movie.
It has all that a good movie should have. A good story, engaging character that are consistent, believable, nice photography, moments of fun, love, drama and a good ending (happy or nor).
So because this movie was truly entertaining and the kind that I could watch more than once, I give it 10 stars.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Irrational Sci-Fi with Bollywood ending
One thing is to believe on extra-terrestrial life.
Another is to believe that they are coming to conquer the Earth.
And yet another is to believe they can reset the battle to a save point like in a video game.
And once you make the effort to swallow that, one has to believe that this power is shared between the mastermind of the alien force and Tom Cruise (who else...).
Well, once you assume this -after all, it's Sci-Fi, so let's pretend Einstein never existed- the movie is quite coherent and logical... until the very end.
The end is not coherent with the rest of the movie, it's not just a rewind, but past history is rewritten. It's irrational, it's absurd, it's not Hollywood, it's Bollywood! Somebody should have explained the scriptwriter that one needs to travel to PAST to change PRESENT, you cannot change PRESENT from FUTURE. Maybe he or she should watch Back to the Future!
On top of this, it's true what most reviewers say: repetitive, lack of back-history for characters, not so original and it's a shame because I liked the idea and the special effects are impressive.
Bliss (2021)
Original and witty
I found this film quite interesting and original approach to drugs, happinness and the simulation hypothesis. The plot turns make the viewer hesitate about what's true and what's faked and Salma is spectacular here.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
A movie on virtue and vice
This beautiful movie speaks about hope, about doing your best even when luck turns against you, about humanity, with his lights and shadows, it's about friendship, about cowardice, about the miseries and corruption of the evil...
In essence, it's a movie about virtue and vices, staged on a prison.
It's this kind of movies that despite being long, they keep interest and seem short. A piece of art.
The Worthy (2016)
A horror movie with unrealistic ending
The only problem of this movie is that it is a horror sci-fi movie, rather than a thriller.
It's full of evil, blood, unsettling landscapes and unescapable misery.
The ending is unrealistic.
El hoyo (2019)
A dystopian alegory of the society with lef-wing political bias.
The story pictures a dystopian correction center where the prisoners are confined in stages and given food remains from upper levels. It's an alegory of the society, where the privileged class is represented by the upper stages, and the renegades of the society by the prisoners in the lower stages.
The story shows how the selfishness of some greedy consumers in upper levels result on misery and starvation on the rest of inmates.
The trick here is that the prisoners can't do anything except consuming less, their levels seem to be randomly assigned, however an in-depth analysis seem to unveil some patterns where violence and greediness are favored by the system.
The political message is clear, and in line with stereotypes of the evil wealthy, who are to blame for the scarcity and inequalities in the world. While it encourages a reflection on our personal responsibility in the inequalities of the society and our consumption patterns, the alegory is biased by the so called moral of slaves, where the personal weaknesses are elevated to virtues.
In the alegory, the amount of food is fixed, and there is nothing that prisoners can do to improve their share, except consuming responsibly. The lack of empthy with lower levels does not seem according to our society either, but on top of this, the inmates can't use their intelligence or theri efforts in order to improve their personal and collective situation, to produce more food, to create value, as it is the case in real life.´
This anti-capitalistic spirit is very much in line with the political sign of the government that helped funding this film through public entities. And it goes as far as to justify the violence, since social justice is not spontaneous, an idea that reminds of the concept of class struggle and revolution in Marx or Engels.
The end of the movie is deceiving, the story is not properly closed and leaves the spectator with many questions and interpretation... The only thing that is not open to interpretation is what is the purpose of this film.
Kristen (2015)
Scary and engaging
I give it 9 stars for the ability of the director to create suspense and thrill, and the engaging, realistic and brilliant performance of Terence Schreurs in the role of Kristen.
2101 (2014)
It's a B movie, very amateur
It's definitely not at the level that one expect in a global movie distribution network.
I would have given it a better score as undergraduate practice work.
It's a pity because the idea was quite original and hence expectations were high...
The problems are: the movie is way too slow, the scripts are naive and stereotypical, overacted in a way that doesn't look natural and credible. And the ending is abrupt and leaves all questions unanswered, which adds up to the accumulated frustration of the spectators.
