Big Zuu Goes to Mecca (2024 TV Special)
10/10
A fabulous documentary
15 April 2024
For many of us it provides an excellent insight to a religion we may know little about. Big Zuu's is always a genial host, but in this documentary he shows a side to him I for one knew little about. From his life with friends, but also his family and the various challenges they faced when he was a kid. Lovely to see him with his mum and brother before he sets our.

He also shows a very different side of Islam to what many of us are used to, the togetherness of those who are supporting each other both in the UK and when he arrives in Mecca, where he is clearly moved at the warmth he receives from strangers who all gather and support each other.

Hats off to him, his friends and family and the crew for making this fascinating programme.

The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Season 1, Episode 3
10/10
A perfect episode
29 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
An episode that fitted in with those before it, but told an incredible standalone story.

It's hard to imagine the production team considering the narrative they needed to cover within such a limited timeframe, together with the emotional aspects which needed to be told in such a heartfelt and beautiful fashion.

For such an extraordinary series, that they managed to include such a standalone love story is incredible and the performances, direction and music simply could not be bettered.

That one of the characters was able to equate his role in life to that of Joel's gave it some added poignancy.

My Son Hunter (2022)

Hysterical that it's even worse than you might expect
11 September 2022
The director famous for making Demon Sheep, which helped Carly Fiorina lose the California Senate race and a writer of biblical novels, come together to write a piece of hysterical propaganda. You can tell how much their fans lap it up as they rate it as though it's Godfather or Citizen Kane, which is a clue to their rose coloured spectacles.

Somehow the millionaires and billionaires who fund this cheese fest manage to distract attention from them being an "elite" and suggest those supporters should focus their anger to some vague amorphous group elsewhere.

It's fitting that it stars Laurence Fox, a man most famous for being a failure, particularly since he was one of the few candidates to lose their deposit in the election to become Mayor of London.

Very enjoyable

Beautiful to look at, featured some great tunes and used innovative ways of showing social networks and messaging.

Great to see something covering locations and history we've not seen before in a Disney or Marvel and having a muslim character@

Watched the whole series and enjoyed it very much
4 January 2022
Great performances from the central 3 and the remainder of the cast, excellent locations (particularly as that must have been a little challenging in these times), good to see the plot and character development that could take advantage of the extra time available and enable them to look at some deeper themes too.

Excellent

Informative, passionate, heartfelt and bringing together multiple aspects to tell stories which in many cases have never been told.

Some of the critical reviews seemed to miss the point of the diving, but in multiple cases they are explicit about what they are doing and how it relates to the story of that episode.

This story needs to be told and it's both enriched by the content and personal relevance of Samuel L Jackson, plus of course he helps draw a global audience.

Absolutely brilliant

Great set up - with a fantastic cast thrown together by circumstances. The first two episodes do some background to why a few of them are there or what their issues are and also mixes in a lot of cracking gags Each of them has stuff to deal with, some more difficult (or indeed hazardous) than others and I can't wait to see how they get on.

Had to mention that they made great use of the Bristol location and not just the posh bits. Also it's brilliant to see Christopher Walken there delivering Merchant's jokes and being perfect as always.

Late Night Mash (2021–2022)

Had a couple of misfires in the first couple of episodes but gets funnier and funnier each week
22 October 2021
It's a late night satirical show mocking current affairs and you can tell from some of the other reviews that they have found it provocative and therefore it's done its job.

They've had some great guests such as Ahir Shah, Geoff Norcott, Michael Spicer, Rosie Jones and plenty more besides.

The standout moment of this series for me was Rachel Parris segment on misogyny in episode 7. She did such a great job that it made many of the national news sites.

Best Bond film ever
2 October 2021
Great action, very funny, beautifully poignant and many great call backs to previous storylines. A fabulous last outing for Daniel Craig.

For those who gave it 1 star as they only want Bond from the 70s I'm afraid those days are long since over and it's time you moved on.

Great mix of humour and depth
13 September 2021
If you've enjoyed Greg's stand up or Man Down in the past then you should find plenty to enjoy, as each episode has some great gags and every now and then a little depth creeps into the story and catches you by surprise. There are also some great guest spots.

I can only assume that some negative reviewers are not fans of his humour - we watched the first 4 in one sitting and like it a lot :-)

Simply brilliant
17 August 2021
Very funny, great mix of characters, but also poignant storylines and so much heart and warmth.

I watched series 1 and 2 at least a couple of times during lockdown and we've already watched all of season 3 over 2 evenings. It was lovely and the way they managed a smaller cast for Kitty's story was ingenious and very funny.

If you like his stand up shows you'll like this a lot
17 August 2021
We've seen quite a bit of Phil's stand up and it was great to see a new show and all full of new material.

Much of it very topical, which is not necessarily easy in these challenging times, but he pulled it off and we laughed a lot all the way through.

Splendid cast all round, top performances and a great story. Some terrific humour but with a fair amount of heart to it as well.

A fascinating story beautifully told
26 June 2021
In many episodes the story starts turning a particular way and you think you know what will unfold, but it's full of surprises. There is also a great blend of the darkness of some aspects, plus the charm of some of the characters and the beauty of the images. It's great that they were able to make and release such a show in these times.

My only fear with any great show these days these days is that the production company won't commit to the next season until they ensure it's worth their while.

Just a show start to finish which ties up any loose ends and then release it please :)

Best series of the year
31 May 2021
Over the last twelve months I've watched a lot of TV and quite simply this is the best. Fantastic performance from Kate Winslet and the rest of the cast are fabulous too. The story had so many intriguing threads and usually multiple cliffhangers most weeks.

Great stuff...I hope someone else brings it back for season 2
11 April 2021
Extraordinary some of the other shows the negative reviews compare it to. It's far more entertaining than those and regularly adds a bit of depth to it too.

It's got a great supporting cast, plenty of laughs and lots of tension throughout the series too.

Give it a try and let's hope they commission series 2 :)

I like it and would happily watch more...
31 March 2021
I don't agree with the naysayers. If they were expecting either the show from the 1980s or the more violent recent films they were clearly going to be disappointed.

I came with an open mind and was looking forward to seeing something with Queen Latifah in. I enjoyed the switch to a female lead and that it has a very diverse set of other characters in it. They've also covered a couple of social issues in there but without being too over the top (to not scare anyone away!). The action is entertaining and it's got some humour too.

Illuminating
22 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Anybody who states that the film picks the same targets as late night TV hosts or as Michael Moore's other films is simply proving they haven't seen it. There's a broad range of subjects from across the US political spectrum - the DNC and the leadership of the Dems, Flint, West Virginia teacher strike, the Parkland shooting & students and the 2016 election.

Some of it is very uncomfortable viewing whether you're on the right or left. Hopefully some of those people may want to do something about the issues which are raised.
