Hidden Figures (2016)
Shallow. Shoots itself in the foot by hyperfocusing on race.
I get it, racial segregation is a major point in the movie. The issue is that it points it out constantly, the movie is almost a just compilation of these moments. There is no interest at all in the actual characters, there are cheap attempts at trying to get you to care about them but they are just that, cheap and rushed tricks.
The rating this movie have gained shows how inflated ratings can become when a movie is about a moral subject. The movie is not rated, just the way people feel about the subject.
If you want to watch a movie that actually does it well, watch The Banker. It does right what did this wrong.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
Great story, misunderstood character
I often see Daniel Plainview described as psychopathic, opportunistic, as a metaphor of corporate greed or whatever. I have even seen him described as "one of the scariest villains in film". I strongly disagree with this.
Plainview is an intensely ambitious, competitive man that will step over others to get to where he wants to be. But he does not do it without regret. Daniel´s conscious grows heavier and heavier until he is consumed by self hatred. He does what he does to H. W at the end not because he does not care about him, but because he is a painful reminder of who he is and what he have done.
I dont think he is a villain at all. I think he is a tragic figure. A man who wants to be who he is, but at the same time can not live with himself. The burden have grown too heavy.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
Watchable movie dragged down by incessant social commentary
I will start out by saying that there is one interesting character in the film that makes the movie more endurable, and that is Benoit. I never liked Daniel Craig as James Bond, but he was really good in this character. I loved his accent.
The movie is in my eyes ruined by constant references to current events. It doesnt further characters nor plot, its just a cheap gimmick to mask poor filmmaking. It was so frequent that it felt like the movie was just a vehicle for it.
Cov-id, nft, influencers and Edward Nortons character who is so obviously a sneering reference to Elon Musk. The movie is unintentionally ironic since it thinks it criticizes the popular things of today but actually regurgitates the most popular opinions of all over and over again.
The Siege (1998)
Bad film carried by great actors
Denzel Washington and Bruce Wills are interesting enough on their own to make the movie good enough go watch. But otherwise its very meh and Anette Benings character fit in so poorly and was just such a weird character in general that it made the movie worse. It seemed like they tried to make her character a representation of the CIA but she just came across as a bipolar hoe?
The movie does have an interesting idea but some of the stuff about the middle east makes the movie look more serious than its vibe actually is. Its an action flick that sometimes tries to go beyond that, they should just have stuck with the action.
The Harder They Fall (2021)
Cheap Tarantino knock off
This movie tries to be cool so hard that it becomes the opposite. It imitates Tarantino in a way that reminds of a high schoolers fan fiction. The pacing is really strange as well, anti suspension film making.
You can watch it to the end because some of the actors are good.
Les frères Sisters (2018)
Watchable but something is missing
It never really felt like a western to me. It felt like a film where they happen to wear western clothes. The actors were acting, Jake Gyllenhaal especially did not really fit into this enviroment.
They have a collection of scenes that makes sense in a timeline but that just lacks any central aspect to tie it all together, so it was a bit flat. There is a story within the film regardning the characters that could have been explored more in my opinion, it would have been really good if the film was about THAT.
Matchstick Men (2003)
Ending completely ruined the film
Stop at half and pretend that was it. Worst ending ever.
Shot Caller (2017)
Pleasant surprise
I expected some gang criminal fetisching like Sons of Anarchy but it was nothing like that. This is a film about guilt and dilemmas, a man who was pushed toward a path he never wanted to take.
Spotlight (2015)
Poor film, high ratings because it engages in a moral subject
Very poorly executed. There was no suspension at all, no surprises, twists or any form of revelations. You knew everything from the start so there was no feeling of investigation or anything really.
If this was not about a moral subject, it would had a 6.2 on imdb, not 8
Contratiempo (2016)
Felt like a generic detective tv serie episode
Everything about it is generic and dull, i was really surprised considering the high ratings. It is very typical of detective tv shows, it keeps some superficial overdone suspense while it entertains incredible unfounded theories which have 0 meaning to a court.
It is very predictable except for one really ridiculous plottwist which is characteristic of low level tv series.
All the Money in the World (2017)
Very good in many aspects but falls on the finish line
It has a very pleasant pacing and acting but it never really reveals itself. I think the film is about Mr. Getty and his character, his true self and it puts many ideas in your head regarding this. Sadly, it is never revealed clearly enough what Mr. Gettys motivation was, what was in his heart.
So much potential but it completely failed by doing so, there is so much potential for emotion and character in the sense of Unforgiven, but no, instead it kept itself in the dark. Shame.
Whiplash (2014)
It really is a masterpiece, it shook me
I went in to this movie thinking i was going to hate it, that it would only fit a certain crowd and that it would make a political statement against tough teaching. I was wrong. It does not make a statement for or against it, and is not neutral either. It is just there.
Whiplash have the characteristic of all masterpieces, it is completely unique which makes it difficult to describe it. It has a life of its own.
The only characteristic i can express to you is intensity. It is so intense that you can not look away, your pulse goes up and the intensity is only escalating the further you get. There is no rest, only escalating intensity. Thus it does not follow the typical structure of film, the closest film i can compare its structure and intensity to is Apocalypto. And the ending, oh god, it is so unconventional, it left me speechless.
This is art, thank you for the experience.
Molly's Game (2017)
Flat at first, but fills with emotion eventually
A 6 means a good movie in my book. It is very flat and boring at first, pace is very fast and the narrating is both fast and dry. Feels like a movie about google or tech at that point.
But eventually it turns deeper, the personal values and relationships matters and are explored. It is worth watching.
Transsiberian (2008)
Suspensful, interesting and unconventional, but also off putting
There is great suspense in this film, and it is interesting because it is not a generic plot or feel at all. Ben Kingsley is great. However, the proganist is so dislikable and impossible to relate to or feel any respect for, that it is frustrating to watch.
Under Suspicion (2000)
Great actors, terrible ending
Until the ending its a bit meh, reminds of some generic tv show, but the ending is awful and just irritating. So many unanswered questions. I feel like the director just got tired and went home.
Identity (2003)
100% plot twists, 0% quality
This is perfect for 14 year olds who thinks 50 crazy plot twists is a good movie
Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
Wow, this was a unique experience
At first you think its a regular action movie, but it really isnt. I dont know how to describe it, there is something so unique and off beat about it. There is even some humour which is so strange that you dont know if you should laugh or not.
What i can say is that it is completely unique, it is a slow burn thriller which is driven by characters, real emotions and a confusion around the plot.
The Game Changers (2018)
Celebration of misinformation
This "documentary" was the subject of a huge controversy in the field of nutrition. No documentary have unified researchers in such despise, i cant even count the number of researchers who have debunked this.
