Hacks (2021)
Don't Pass Up This Delectable Comedy
This show highlights generational differences in such a fun and sharp way. I adore this comedy on every level. It's smart, tender, edgy, and hilarious.
Jean Smart really shows her versatility and Hannah Einbinder is a delight. The themes are relevant without being corny. Most episodes are that rare blend of both comedy and true heart and soul.
The aesthetic is also truly enjoyable. So many great outfits, rooms, and areas to keep the eyes just as engaged as the mind.
This show also takes current events and issues and shows how both younger and mature generations can learn from one another and it need not be mean or ugly. It can be fun and make us all better people.
And Just Like That...: There Goes the Neighborhood (2023)
I think I'm done..
This episode was not only bland, but downright condescending to the viewer. It was soaked in odd elitist snobbery while still managing to make literally every woman character feel clingy, dumb, or just strange. I keep hoping this series will get better, but it's just not.
Miranda's role keeps getting more and more muddled. Aiden and Carrie feel totally disingenuous. Charlotte lacks the confidence that allowed her to previously get away with being both prude and cute, and Che is still almost impossible to warm up to, in spite of having been softened some. I do think Che is adorable, though.
I'm enjoying outfits and hair and not much else.
Plane (2023)
Decent action flick
This movie delivers a believable plot, lots of action, with good acting all around. I was pleasantly surprised by it. It's in the ilk of the 90s to 2000s thrillers with decent effects and characters that are imperfect, but likeable.
Gerard Butler brings his steady hand with action movie skills to the table in a way that I've personally missed. You'll also see a few other familiar and reliably good actors in supportive roles.
Not overly bloody, but likely too violent for little ones. There's some subtle details, too, that give this movie its best chance at being fully enjoyed if you give it your full attention. Would recommend.
8-Bit Christmas (2021)
I dunno
Felt cliché and kinda mean. Some things were nostalgic and accurate, but the comedy is pretty much just about being crappy to each other.
The clothes and asthetic were okay, but more what I think people imagine this time was like, instead of actually being what it was like.
The way the characters treat each other is the worst, though. They're all in it for themselves, a dog gets squished, there's almost no kindness, and the parents are like an afterthought.
This was just not for me. I know all is not sunshine and rainbows, and kids can be pretty mean, but this movie forces meanness into places it didn't need to be.
