Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020)
A spit in the face that is the legacy of star trek.
This is NOT star trek and got nothing to do with star trek. It's just a cheap cartoon that rob the star trek name and superficials to cash grab. It's neither thought provoking nor meaningful social commentary.
How can decision makers "ok" this? How can writers and directors stain their names with this garbage and disrespect everything that's star trek?
Titans (2018)
Lots of expositions and flash backs with few interesting bits sprinkle in between.
This is a review from the first episode to s2e12.
It is a good series but often times too much filler contents and expositions, also can feel a bit disjointed with all the flashbacks and constantly jumping between characters.
A few weeks ago I would've rate this series a 9 or even 10, but the mandalorian had spoiled me and show me what is possible, I guess you can say it shown me the way.
The good parts are really good but they had to ship it with the uninteresting boring slow parts. If they had given us only the good parts and cut out the boring stuff it would've been perfect.
The Mandalorian (2019)
The Mandalorian has the potential to be to starwars what Ironman was to the MCU.
Jon Favreau help made MCU mainstream with Ironman and now he may do it again for starwars with The Mandalorian. He very well could be the second golden boy for disney next to Kevin Feige.
I put off reviewing the series until I've seen more of it and after episode 3, I have a good idea of where they're going with it and how they're handling the series. Three episodes in and not once did Pedro Pascal took his mask off, we know he could act, we all saw his performance in GoT and it was amazing so his talent is not in question, they made him kept his mask on because the lore and their vision for the series is more important than showing off his talents. This tells me they cared about the lore and story and is what convinced me the series wouldn't disappoint going forward.
In addition, Jon Favreau took all of what we love about Boba Fett and what was cool about him and expanded it in the mandalorian, from the armor that first captured our attention to the jet pack to grapple hook. You can tell this series was made by a fan that love the material. I can't wait to see more.
Watchmen (2019)
In name only
The original watchmen, both the comics and the movie, was about the bigger picture. How to stop a cold war, what is time, the meaning of life........overall a philosophical piece.
This pilot expand on the most uninteresting part of the comics, the people and the smaller pieces on the board. I want to know what dr.Manhattan is doing not who the cops are shooting. It like watching GOT from the perspective of a foot soldier. Boring.
Swamp Thing (2019)
Every aspect came together in perfection, such ashamed it was cancel for no reason.
From the cinematography to story to acting, it was all perfect. A great show with a humble origin in comics making into a mature and engaging show. It's so good, to me it's one of the best comic to tv series of our time if not ever, yes, even better than the netflix series and definitely better than the CW series by a mile. I really don't understand why they cancelled it without giving it a chance.
Why.......just......why?
Inhumans (2017)
What a disappointing pilot.
If I can review this with only one word, it would be "meh".
I do believe this show got the potentials to be great down the line, but the pilots were really disappointing. There's nothing that grips us that gives us that feeling of "wow! what's next?".
For Christ sake! This is the pilot! It's suppose to be the sucker punch that knock us out and set the momentum of the rest of the series. Instead it's only forgettable at best.
Our time is limited and I've personally invested in watching series that got cancel without resolution or just felt like a waste of time. I'm afraid this may be one of those series.
I suggest wait for the entire season to finish and read reviews before investing time or emotions into this show.
What Happened to Monday (2017)
One of the few thought provoking films available
Everything in this movie is excellent, from the acting to the writing to the cinematography. The film is in a sci-fi setting but the story is more of a philosophical one.
There are no true heroes or villains in this story, only people doing their best to survive in the world they're put in. We get to see this story unfolds in the views of 7 sisters all played brilliantly by Noomi Rapace, she made me a fan in this movie.
The movie makes you questions yourself on what is right and wrong. What if you're born into a world where you're a criminal just for being born? What if you have such a child? What if you have to enforce cruel laws for the survival of the specie? What would you do?
You will leave this movie siding with one side or another but without a clear answer because there are none.
The Tick (2016)
Better than expected
I've never watched the original cartoon and went into this totally blind. With a name like "The Tick", one would expect some goofy things that tried too hard to make you laugh and non-existent story.
What I've found was the complete opposite, the characters felt real with a coherent and gripping storyline. The show never tries too hard to make you laugh and instead just do it's thing, if you find it funny, good; if not then so be it. Where it failed to be a comedy it succeed in entertaining with the sum of the character development and storyline.
Give it a try, it might surprise you as it did me.
The Defenders (2017)
It's not bad, but not good either.
There's no character development and Iron Fist continues to be bad and proves to be the weakest link in this team-up series.
I really don't know what the writers and directors are trying to do, are they making this for themselves or for us? It sometimes feel like a poorly done art project for in house viewing only. Because as an audience, I'm not entertained and thoroughly bored with a lingering sensation of mediocrity as the show finishes.
When watching the fight scenes, I had a thought. The things they put on screen these days whether it's a movie or a series, lacks attitude. Remember that final fight between the Bride and Oshi in kill bill? There weren't much movements or choreography but when Oshi slowly steps on the snow and that bamboo clapping sound start playing as "don't let me be misunderstood" slowly tuning in.....the attitude there was over the top! Totally bad ass! Or the classic "do I feel lucky, punk?" moment. This series have none of those, scene after scene is filled with forgettable mediocrity.
If you skipped this show, you wouldn't be missing much.
Death Note (2017)
The anime was better
The only thing this adaptation adopts is the premise of the death note, a book that kills people if their name is written on it. Where the original manga and anime were so much more.
In the anime, there were lots of psychology and mind games between the characters it's like a constant chess match of out thinking the opponent. They were thoughtful and contemplative and hardly ever lose their cool. It would have been successful even without the "death note" gimmick, if Light were killing people with nano machines or even traditionally like Dexter it still would've been an engaging story.
This adaptation have the characters screaming and emotional all the time. I'm not against changing the story by placing the characters in different situation or having alternate endings, like Peter Parker end up with Gwen or him teaming up with Green Goblin. But when you changed the spirit of the character and make him feels like a bully in the amazing spiderman then you might as well call it something else because Peter Parker are many things but never a bully.
Which is what this version of death note is, it might as well be something else because it completely butchered the spirit of the original material. Not the premise, not general story, but the spirit of the characters. Gone are the battle of the minds which are replaced by running and screaming like some Tom Cruise movie.
To be fair, the Japanese real life adaptation didn't do the anime justice either. Perhaps this is better off as a series and cannot be compressed into a movie and still retain the genius of what it was. But even if they stretched this version out into a series it would still fall short due to the writers and directors missing the point; it's not about the book, it's about the characters.
12 Monkeys (2015)
One of the best time travel shows yet!
When I first started the show, I had really low expectations because I always felt if it was good it would be it's own original and unique thing and not an expansion of a movie of years past.
Boy was I wrong, this show is amazing and is very much it's own thing. The only thing that it borrows from the movie so far is the general plot of people traveling back in time to stop a whole ending plague, and that's only the beginning, it has since becoming some thing so much more.
Everything else is new, from the storyline to most of the characters and the direction of the plot. This is especially true for season 3 which really going deep into exploring the different facet of time travel.
There are many shows before this that pertains to time travel like quantum leap, continuum and legends of tomorrow. But what most of these shows do is just use time travel as an after thought or an excuse to put the characters in a situation and completely forget and ignore the premise, they are closer to adventure series than sci-fi.
What THIS show does is exploring the the "what-ifs" and "why nots" of time travel. It's a true sci-fi show. Give it a chance, if you like science fiction at all, there's a high chance you'll love the show as much as I do.
The Good Fight (2017)
One of the best drama series of today!
This series proves that you don't need great special effects to make a great drama show and it's one of the best out there. It also includes relevant social commentaries within its stories with great acting and excellent background music with each important scenes. The directors, writers and actors should be proud of what they accomplished and we the viewers are blessed that such a show exists.
This is nothing less than perfection. I put it up there in the same league as with walking dead, game of thrones and westworld. It may not have the same special effects but the stories, character development and drama is on the same level if not more.
If you like dramas at all, watch this series!
Iron Fist (2017)
One of the worst choreography in the past 5 years.
For a series based on a superhero about Kungfu this got one of the worst fighting scenes of not only all the netfix-marvel series, but ALL the current series in television today.
Its downfall comes from a combination of poor directing, cutting, and choreography. The actions are stiff and looks acted, taking you out of immersion with every strike. This becomes most apparent in episode 6. It's so bad it reminds me of low budget B-movies. As a comparison, the action scenes from Arrow is about 2 times better than this series.
So what does it matters if the story and acting is good? Because it's an IRON FIST series that's why. It's a KungFu based superhero, that's why. You don't go into a Jackie Chan movie and forgive sub par action, will you? This in my mind should be the series that sets the standards on all action scenes in netflix going forward, instead it's the worst.
But what about the story? It's not bad, outside of fighting, we have a fairly competent standard soap opera story we expect from TV these days. The drama isn't as well written as "the good wife", the reveals isn't as thrilling as "designated survivor" and the humor is non- existent but that's OK, this isn't a comedy. It's just good enough to keep you watching and endure the horrible action scenes.
If this was any other series with bad choreography, I'd probably rate it higher. But this isn't any other series, this is IRON FIST with bad choreography. It's as bad as a superman that can't fly.
