Re-Animator (1985)
The 4 genre movie
Re-animator can be considered to be a part of many genres. It does meet the definition of a cult film, a horror film, a sci-fi film and even a comedy film. The movie has a somewhat similar plot to that of Frankenstein. But instead of creating a monster from virtual scratch, a young medical student named Jeffrey Combs is motivated to bring dead corpses back to life. He quickly becomes friends with another medical student, whose girlfriend's father just happens to be a doctor. The re- animations do not go well at first, the revived corpses are not able to think clearly and they try to kill him. This movie is has a solid R- rating and it is one of the most graphic and gory movies I have ever seen. This movie takes on gore like the movie The Evil Dead with the main goal of making it so gory that it is humorous. Jeffrey quickly moves from re-animating animals to re-animating people, even though they are not quite the same re-animated as they were when they were alive. The corpses are re-animated by injecting a needle with green serum into the back of the head, sometimes with highly violent results. Then the movie gets odd and humorous giving i it's cult and comedy rating. A re- animated corpse tries to rape a girl but his severed head cannot do it. The same corpse with the severed head tries to control it's body and it crashes into things. I did enjoy this movie, it was a very unique movie and it was very fun to watch. But however, I would not recommend this film to those who do not like graphic movies. The movie was a very pleasant surprise and it is very funny.
Date Movie (2006)
Unfunny and Stupid
Date Movie is a failed movie, and the last time I checked, it was in IMDb's bottom 250. Now I know as to why it is on such a shameful list. The film is vulgar and pointless and it is like a broken record, and it repeats the same unfunny gags and jokes again and again. The movie makes no sense. The movie makes fun of romantic films and it is about an overweight girl who falls in love with a man with a British Accent. Many unfunny gags are used such as a cat making bodily dysfunctions on the toilet and a girl with an over sized butt. The film doesn't even parody the romantic movies, the film just makes them look far better. I didn't laugh once during the whole thing, and the definition of a parody is to make laughs. And that I didn't laugh at all is saying something because I thought that Epic Movie and Vampires Suck were both funny. To summarize this, this movie fails to do what other parody movies have done:exaggerate the parts/elements of a movie to the extent that it is funny. They don't exaggerate, they come up with non-relevant scenes that doesn't pertain at all to a parody movie. This movie is not worth your time. I am trying to save you from this horrible movie.
Scream 4 (2011)
Not to be missed
Scream 4 is much like its' predecessors in the sense that it gives us the best of both worlds, horror and comedy. Similar to the other films, numerous references are made to other horror films and they tease and mock many elements of the slasher film such as plot twists ( Friday The 13th),and miraculously reviving when the killer is presumed dead (Halloween). The creators of Scream 4 thought outside the box and they incorporated their own elements rather than following other slasher films (sex, one survivor). The gore in the film is plentiful but at times it is exaggerated to the extent that it is unnecessary and the makers of the film wanted large amounts of gore in order to make it a "splatter film". In films such as this, we tend to focus more on the suspense and elements that build up to the big scenes rather than the acting of the characters as individuals. The acting is fairly good for a horror movie. The actors do a good job at portraying terror and horror throughout the film. I would classify Scream as a dark comedy. There are many people who say that Wes Craven can't direct like he used to. Well, they are wrong. Wes Craven proved with this film that age doesn't affect ones performance in film. Many sequels are boring and they are mere duplicates of the original. But what is unique about Scream 4 is that it takes its' own path towards creativity. See it!
Saw (2004)
I Saw it
Saw is a grisly film that puts too much emphasis on the graphic scenes rather than the development of characters. I believe that gore in some cases adds realism to some movies and Saw is one of them. I do praise the art direction and the makeup in the film. But the film has many noticeable flaws if you pay attention. This is an example of the idiot game. If people in the movie actually had a brain, the problem would be solved and the movie would be over. One such example is an escaped prisoner of Jigsaw not telling the police where he is located. The police in the movie are relatively weak. I challenge their logic of having two people chase down Jigsaw with a pistol rather than a whole army. Another question that arises is, how does Jigsaw drug his victims? Does he simply knock on people's doors and drug them? According to many audience reviews, the grand majority have seemed to enjoy it. Well, I am not afraid to go against contrary belief. Saw was a decent film that got too carried away with dull scenes in which minimal items of importance occurred.
The Fly (1986)
Finally, a good remake!
When I hear the word remake in the same sentence as a beloved movie, I am hesitant to watch it. But this is the rare exception in which the remake equals if not exceeds the original. The movie revolves around Veronica Quaife, who is a reporter trying to interview the scientist Seth Brundle who is attempting to create teleportation devices. In the beginning he tests baboons to see if it works. Let's just say the first experiment was a grisly result. Once he finally gets it to work, he transports himself, not knowing that a fly was in the teleportation device with him. As a result he starts to mutate into a fly like creature. The idea of the film at first sounds cheesy and laughable and something that would be a sci-fi channel movie. But what they do well is bring the plot to life. They focus on detail of the makeup and gore. Teeth fall out, limbs detach, he throws up enzymes. The film is grotesque but it is a rare cross between a bloodfest and a love story. The film is well scripted and it is possibly the best remake of all time. The film did not have high expectations, but Cronenberg made it work.
Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958)
Sloppily done dialogue and visual effects
A poorly done and rushed movie to say the least. I perfectly understand that the visual effects of 50's sci fi movies are nowhere near to what they are like today. But however, even for the 50s, the visual effects were awful. I would put it in the same sentence with Plan 9 From Outer Space. First off, when a movie is in an hour long but it feels like three hours, there is something wrong with it. She doesn't mutate until the final 15 minutes of the movie. There are things in the movie I question such as how a 50 foot woman can fit in her own bedroom. There is also a problem with consistency. Nancy appears to be different sizes throughout the movie. She is also at times transparent and nontransparent, which the movie makers didn't care about. The alien on the ship appears to be a stitched up old man and it is comical. I understand that it is a cult movie, which is supposed to be a movie that is so bad to the extent that it is good, but there is no point in seeing the movie. There is no element in the film that awes the audience.
Friday the 13th (1980)
Suspense + Killing = slasher
I had mixed thoughts about the film. The characters in the movie are stupid (how shocking, that never happens in a slasher film). One lesson is never get into a strangers' car. One of the characters does exactly that and she is killed. Mrs. Voorhees lures the characters into traps. She clips the power line and she attracts the teenagers to the powerhouse, just like how a spider attracts a fly. And then she goes for the kill. The makeup and special effects for the film are well done. The film is a blood fest and it possibly the first bloody/ gory slasher film. But the plot is incoherent and it is too focused on the deaths and the body counts. The characters are not really given personalities, except for the fact that they are all addicted to sex. We don't have much background of them either. If you haven't seen this film yet, you probably think the killer is Jason Voorhees. You are wrong. It is Mrs. Voorhees. A senior citizen- aged woman with a fleece sweater was not quite my original vision of Mrs. Voorhees. What I want to know is how an old woman is able to find all of them out of all the possible places on the camp within hours. I also want to know why the teenagers didn't just walk out of the camp. The film has the elements of a typical horror movie. It has its moments and there are suspenseful parts. But they think they can amuse the audience by having sex and deaths while having poorly constructed characters but that doesn't work in reality.
