John Carter (2012)
I really liked it!
After the bad reviews and it's rushed cinema release I never saw John Carter in the cinema. But then i saw it on Blu-ray when it was released, and I was entertained and a bit shocked. This movie is not for anyone for sure, but it has this 80s-90s adventure sci-fi movie feeling to it. Like classics like Krull or Willow. I really liked the story and the special FX was good. It's more of a family adventure movie and should be seen as that. And i really liked the idea and twist in the end. Too bad it flopped at the box Office.
Krull (1983)
One of the best classic fantasy movies
I grew up in the 80s with my grandparents renting this on VHS over and over again. It's one of thouse movies that took me back then by storm. It has a bit of Star Wars and a bit of Sword in the stone/King Arthur mixed in to this perfect fantasy like adventure movie.
From start to finish there is a pretty fast pace through everything. And no part felt boring for a child in the 80s in this movie. Great effects for it's time that might look outdated by todays CGI standards, but that shouldent take away much if your looking for a Classic Sci-fi fantasy movie from the 80s. And this one actually has the most amazing weapon used in any movie out there period. I think all actors did great in this movie and some of them became big or known stars later on in their carrer. And Ken Marshall should have been one of them in my opinion.
Krull has a very special vibe to it, that is hard to describe in words. So give it a go if you havent, and enjoy the adventure in this Classic tale of good vs exil.
Point Break (1991)
One of the best action classics
This movie is one if the best action classics from the early 90s. It was a very underrated movie when it was released, but it has grown to be a cult classic on it's own merits.
Alot of movies has tried to copy it through the years, like The fast and furious. Still story wise and acting wise they never actually reach the level like this one did. This one has alot more to offer with raw action and gorgeous scenes that is breathtakingly even today.
Patrick Swayze did one of his best acting performances in this movie as adrenalin junky guru Bodhi that should have given him alot more credit then it did. Same goes for Gary Busey and his character that is both fun and believable.
If you want a fast paced, action packed movie look no further, see the original Point Break!
The Karate Kid (1984)
One of the best movies/cult classics
This movie is a big part of my childhood. This was probably the first VHS movie i got as a kid, and I saw it almost everyday when I was little. Even today as an adult i still feel it's one of the best underdog storys made for the silverscreen. The story about the new kid in school being bullied by the popular kids in his new school is as relevant today as it was back then. How a unlikly friendship leads to self-confidence aswell as trust and understanding that triumf everything. Pat and Ralph does an amazing job portraying the characters, their chemistry is pure magic.
All actors did an amazing job and I can't find anything to complain about. The perfect soundtrack today takes you away back to the 80s both with it's beautyful instrumental sound aswell as the 80s pop songs.
This is a pure classic and none should miss it. And whats even more awesome is that you can see what happened to the characters 35 years later in the TV-series Cobra Kai. That makes homage to this movie in the best possible ways.
Van Helsing (2004)
Not so bad!
Saw this in the cinema when it was released and thought it was pretty okey actually. Since then i've seen it a couple of times on TV. And i still feel that it's a pretty good movie. Sure you have the female hero with a cringe worthy accent and stuff like that, but who cares? It's a pretty solid action adventure fantasy movie with diffrent monsters from diffrent classics mixed. And the specialFX is pretty solid aswell as the scenery is breathtaking at times. With some small tweaks here and there this could aswell been a Castlevania movie. You find almost everything from the Castlevania games in it, and would it have gone this route i think people would have liked it even more.
Insert Simon Belmont with the vampyre killer and add some more fight scenes and uped the horror a small bit and it would have been Castlevania the movie.
Instead we have Van helsing with a forgotten past that works like a early James Bond agent for the Vatican church. Like James Bond he has his Q in the shape of a priest instead.
Some parts of this movie somehow makes me feel like im watching a movie from the past, when fantasy movies like Krull or even Conan the barbarien did their own thing. And it succeds to entertain eventho it isent a Classic like the ones i mention, and some parts are more dull then others after a viewing or two. So an interesting mix of monsters and a diffrent take on the Van Helsing/Dracula story that for sure isent as bad as the score here might give away.
Aquaman (2018)
Amazing adventure movie
Saw this movie last night and it blew my expectation right out of the water. First of the movie looks stunningly. Some scenes even goes beyond that meanwhile others tips it's toes on being too much CGI/green screen heavy. But for a movie like this it doesn't matter as it's ment to be a bit over the top and fun.
The cast did an amazing job and was really well put together. I didn't know before the movie that stars like Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, Williem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison and Dolph Lundgren was in it. So i was amazed just by that. And to see Dolph Lundgren in a movie like this again was great. Jason Momoa as Aquaman really works. Played by anyone else i think it would have just felt silly. This movie is action packed and fun in the same time. This time around DC really made a great movie that i think the whole family really enjoyed.
Halloween (2018)
This movie felt a bit overrated
I went to this movie with the hype around it in my mind. I was sure that I was going to see something special, because of all the great reviews i had read about it. And the movie started out good in an interesting way. You could say that it hooked me in the beginning. But once the action started it just felt like something you have seen a dozens of times. Very predictable slasher that maybe went a bit too much with the original formula that even the scream movies made fun with back in the days. Going back to the roots is one thing, but if you don't add anything new to the tale it ends up predictable and boring for the viewer. And this movie felt much like a redo on H20 but made today. Instead of having the strong lady in distress Laurie Strode of the 90s you got the older stronger women that almost gave me the Wolwerine in Logan feeling. And of course instead of being the sister to Michael Myers we are now back to not being related at all as we all could see already in the trailer. But to me, the sister thing was a better approach to the story. Having a monster like brother that killed your family when you where little and his still haunting for you, feels scarier and also gives Michael Myers a somewhat goal. We still have the question why he does this. But now his just targeting her as a random person. And in this movie we can ask us the question, why didnt she move ?! And would Michael even try to kill her if she wasent there showing up? In H20 we saw a Michael Myers that was doing everything to find his sister, his prey. Here it felt strange, maybe even a plothole to a degree?
All in all i think Jamie Lee Curtis did her role good eventho the movie felt a bit rushed and her character is a little here and there at times. But as for the movie i felt it had some good points but overal felt "meh". So 5 out of 10 stars from me.
The Meg (2018)
Could have been Jaws for a new generation.
Im a fan of Steve Altens books which this movie is based on. I went to the cinema almost knowing what to expect, but still hoping for it not to be true. But the only things this movie has incommon with the books is it's name, character names and small bits and pieces of the first books story. And that's all to be honest. This movie by it's name and what it's based on could have been a real cult classic if done right. It should have been aimed to be a modern Jaws like horror, action, thriller mix. Instead it seems like the studio chickened out to be frank, and went the opposite direction which made it feel flat, uninspired and more of a comedy.
The source material is so great, because it has great characters and scary situations that's stuff of nightmares. Here they are sadly missing all of it! Like the main characters struggles from being at the top to hit rock bottom and then come back out of life crisis in dozens to be our hero. Not our perfect hero, but a tough almost at the brink of a breakdown hero. His way of making icecold decisions when life is at stake to rise up from the grave is so sadly missing here it's sad. Also his partner Mac's story is like written for an actor to aim for an Oscar award much like the Quint character in Jaws. if nailed to the teeth that is. In the movie these characters feels like Disney versions. And oboy they do all kind of stupid decisions, which makes it feel so rushed it's unbelievable and pure stupid. In the books everybody working around the MEG is on top of their respected line of duty. Here they feel like they wanted to be sharkfood. And when somebody dies we just move on as nothing has happened, could work if we the audience could feel the desperation of the characters needing to rush on without looking back untill it's over. But here we really don't feel anything both toward the victims or their friends. Because they are soulless !
And let's talk about the main story, the MEG here without spoilers. Here it's so over done so it never ever gets scary! In the book it feels like it balance between thriller suspence to pure gore. It's both haunting and nervwrecking. But in the movie you feel nothing at all, nothing at all! And that's just silly in my opinion. Jaws from 1975 feels even today scarier then this. Even if you see it as an popcorn action adventure movie it's just not enjoyable. As a Steve Alten fan, it doesnt matter if im glad for Steve that this was made finaly, when the finished product is so far from his work.
Sometimes it's better to let it be if not done correctly in my honest opinion. Pushing something just to be made, is just not good. And i hope he feels the same honestly, so he get them to not do the same mistake for his other books.
Did the PG rating end up being too important? Well then you didnt believe in the source material to begin with!
So to some good points instead. I liked the look of the first 30mins of the movie. The underwater lab looked pretty good aswell as some of the under water scenes. The shark looked great in some scenes but really bad in others. I didnt mind that the MEG didnt follow the look as in the books. But then again it wouldent have made it worse if it did, as it has it's purpose both scientific aswell as making it's whereabouts known iconic. So maybe a missed oppertunity again?
All in all this movie is lacking alot of suspence and get's pretty boring because of it. It never builds up a momentum enough for anything exciting or scary through out the movie. Jason Statham does what he can, but feels cheesy at times but he does it okeyish. The others are so over the top or one-dimensional it feels like bad acting, meanwhile it could have just been bad directing or writing?
I give this movie 5 stars just because it's not the worst movie in history, and i got to eat some popcorn atleast.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Nice visuals, a great soundtrack and a solid Spider-Man movie!
Since this movie was released I've seen it a couple of times. And I always come to the same conclusion, this wasent bad at all.
Garfield does a solid Spider-Man. It's not the same "nerdish and a little shy like" version as Tobey Maguire did, but instead it's a more straight forward Spider-Man/Peter Parker that feels a bit more modern at times. The old trilogy is classics already by all means, but this one felt more visual pleasing somehow.
The chemistry between Garfield and Emma Stone is still there. Sure the story of one of the bad guys played by Jaime Foxx felt a bit too much to maybe make me sympathize with him turning over to the darkside. But then again with great powers comes maybe too much responsibility for some right? Some people just can't handle the power. We can still understand his motives so it doesnt take much away from the action. And this movie felt really great when it comes to visally upgrading the action scenes, making spidey more visually stunning with it's more colorfull visuals then maybe ever before.
I also think Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn felt alot better then the original trilogys version that felt flat and childish. This one had depth and his own motives and struggles.
The soundtrack is another great one from Hanz Zimmer that adds another level of the emotions felt by the characters and the scenes.
All in all i think this one did alot better then people give it credit for. And it feels like a missed oppertunity not making a 3rd one. They had alot of potential moving forward from this one, without going into spoilers. Instead we ended up with a new Spidey that doesn't do it bad either but feels a bit too childish for my taste. This one felt more like a middleground suited for all ages, like it should be.
Jing wu ying xiong (1994)
The classic movie remake into this modern exploded action packed martial arts movie
As in the original movie with Bruce Lee we follow Chen Zen, a martial arts student that returns home after rumors telling him about his master being beaten to death by another master.... Jet Li who stars in this movie does in my opinion his best performance when it comes to the martial arts point of view. This is a masterpiece for those who wants to see fast rapid fighting from start to the end. It really feels like they have been focused on the fighting scenes in this movie and the story is pretty much easy to understand for most people so there isn't much scenes with people talking about nonsense. If you like the fighting scenes in movies like the matrix you can sense some of it in this movie. ALTHO there isn't any "flying" people in this movie and stuff but there is a lot of extreme kicks and hits in this movie that has the same touch as in matrix. For me this movie is one of the best in its genre. Its almost like watching anime action where the two who fights thinks on every detail on there enemy's technics. A must see for you who like martial arts movies!
