Zootopia (2016)
This film is perfect for those who like simple, unoriginal, and clichéd films. Others will see it as it is: A so-so mess.
Zootopia. A popular and buzz worthy film. But why? It has nothing new going for it AT ALL. It's been done to death. It's crammed full of nowadays and pop culture references and silly humor. It does nothing fresh or different.
The characters are clichéd and nothing new either. Again, WDAS gives us another quirky, optimistic, spunky female lead. Judy is the same as every other WDAS character ever made, except for a small few like Elsa, Meg, Mulan, and that gal from Atlantis.
It's so-so, but not superior in any way, because it doesn't actually do anything new or ground-breaking. It's the same old by-the-book cop story, same old cliché plot, and a moral that is handled blatantly and obviously and just keeps beating you over the head with it every minute... It's visually nice, but it lacks any subtlety.
And the sexualizing of animals is sick and people who go crazy over wanting to do Hopps sexually and such need lives. Seriously. Messed up.
Overall, this film is all hyped now but will most likely end up forgotten years from now unlike actual good Disney films (even some of the more recent ones).
This movie is right up there with Chicken Little and Home on the Range. Shame. After Tangled, WDAS has had some good stuff like Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen and hell, even BH6 was better than this furry lovers film (seriously...wth...)
This movie is for those who like it safe and not wanting to spend time watching a film that is creative, new, original, and unique.
Disney is better than this type of film. Hope they can be impressive again soon. Sadly, all we have now is this terrible film.
Big Hero 6 (2014)
A forgettable film with clichéd characters and story. A big disappointment.
Sadly, this was a huge step back for WDAS. This was definitely no Frozen. This wasn't even Wreck-It Ralph. Heck, this wasn't even Tangled (and that film is dreadfully so-so, but at least it had Flynn and Maximus).
First, the title. This film should have been called Big Hero 2. All it was Hiro and Baymax
mostly Baymax. The other 4 main characters, which weren't main at all— more like secondary, had little screen time and no character development. The other 4 had their own personalities that were never given time to show on screen. They showed up at the beginning, then not until the middle, and a few chunks at the end. They all 4 served no purpose.
Honey Lemon was by far the worst character. She was one big cliché and she didn't do anything but act happy, talk about the color pink, and pronounce Hiro's name annoyingly. Her design was as bad as Rapunzel's; just oddly proportioned and cartoony. Wasabi in the original comics was Asian and is now black for the only reason of having diversity in the film. Fred was kind of interesting and seemed to be the only person who fit the superhero theme. Gogo had a booty, but was too underused. Hiro's aunt was more interesting and likable than the actual 6. Hiro was typical non-original in character but he had his moments. Baymax was supposed to be the saving grace but came off as annoying. He was the stereotypical robot who couldn't understand humans and their ways. A lot of his jokes were repetitive, dragged, and could have been cut. I didn't hate him, he had a good heart and good intentions and was sweet but the humor was annoying. Too much focus on slapstick and action and none of character development and little on emotions.
What irked me was the fact that the other 4 characters never got any time to get us to know who they were and to like them as characters and relate to them; No connection to them. The reason for them to become super was rushed and unoriginal: "Let's be heroes!"
"We're in!" And that's exactly how it happened. And do we always need the typical watching the hero learn to fly with funny results, like Spider-Man, Iron Man, etc?
The film also ended with a cliché. The typical, narration from Hiro as we see the heroes' race through the city
"Who are we? We're the Big Hero 6." What was really bad was when they were heroes they didn't do anything? Their first scene they were goofy and didn't really fight. Then not until the final battle scene the other 4 did not fight or help hardly and ended up captured and Hiro and Baymax saved them and they defeated the bad guy
again, Big Hero 6? Nope.
The villain was pointless, no needed, and not even cool, bad-ass, nor interesting; again, no real purpose. The villain's reveal of who it was, was OBVIOUS and the villain's intentions on why being bad was cliché. The way to defeat him was also obvious and (spoilers) the sacrifice from Baymax was seen a mile away so it wasn't sad, plus, you knew it wasn't going to be the end of that character.
The only good thing the film had was the beginning with Hiro and his relationship with his brother, Tadashi . You could feel the relationship between them. They were great together and it was touching. Loved that. Then after 15-20 minutes the film went downhill
and never stopped. Also, the opening was not a good way to get kids attention. It was unusual and did not have a Disney feel to it. In fact, this film was not Disney at all; it felt more MARVEL.
With two female characters, none of them can be considered strong female role models at all. They weren't on screen enough; they served no purpose, and didn't really do anything in the film.
The story was unoriginal, uninspiring, and full of one cliché after another. The characters were the same. This film was forgettable and as the days go I will forget it and as the years pass many will forget this film which could have been more, but was just about a silly robot and nothing more. The song "Immortal" made for the film from Fall Out Boy was also unforgettable and a generic today rock song. All I recall is the word Immortal used over and over. I can't remember any other lyrics or how the beat goes. The after credits scene wasn't necessary, but more proof this was not Disney but Marvel.
I didn't hate the film at least but it was close to being that. This won't be like Frozen, where people had multiple repeat viewings. Most people, and kids, will probably see it just once and maybe twice, but even Baymax won't get them to keep coming back like Frozen did, because the other characters just weren't there. I saw it once and that was enough. I don't care to see it again and won't own it any time soon, sadly. A boy next to me fell asleep on it. I noticed that kids only laughed or enjoyed Hiro and Baymax but didn't seem to care for the other 4. Best moment of the night was the beginning. During the Disney logo credits, a little girl behind us shouted with excitement. "Is this Frozen?!" Best part of the night. I am thankful I didn't have to pay to see it and that I got this film out of the way fast. I am thankful for the free passes.
"BIG HERO 2", gets a 2.
Tangled (2010)
A Lacking story with Two great characters
I enjoyed Tangled when I watched in back in 2010 in theaters, but after many repeat viewings years later, I realize I like it less than I thought I did then.
The story is nothing original. It's the typical Disney princess formula. I love Disney films but at least other films (even with the formula) had some uniqueness to them.
The best of Tangled:
Flynn/Eugene and Maximus. These two stole the film and were the film. Honestly, Rapunzel was not needed at all with these two being much more likable and charming. They were funny and they both developed/grew at the film's end.
The animation is breathtaking. So beautiful.
The worst of Tangled:
The songs were bad. Only "See the Light" was memorable.
The vikings. They were just...why?
Rapunzel. She was the typical naive, perky, spunky, awkward female character and her design was oddly proportional. I didn't mind her but it's pretty bad when I enjoyed Flynn, Maximus, Pascal, and Gothel more than the main character.
The love between Flynn and Rapunzel was great, though. It was heartwarming and wonderful and the ending was a beautifully-sad twist. But besides that, the film was just an average effort in storytelling. Great visuals and characters but horrible songs and storyline.
Frozen (2013)
Disney's Best in 20 Years (May contain spoilers)
I came into seeing Frozen without any expectations. The teaser of Olaf and Sven acting cute didn't help me wanting to watch this film any time soon. I love Disney animated films, but was weary here. I am glad I went in with no expectations. I was not let down after it ended; I was in love, and have been since I saw it in December.
It has been years since I walked into a film and walked out in total awe and bliss and experiencing true magic. Frozen was the greatest Disney film and actually the best film I have seen in many many years. The film brought the viewer back to Disney's golden years. It has the princesses and the musical numbers. That is what Disney does best.
The songs are beautiful and by far the best since Pocahontas/Hunchback. "Let it Go" brought a tear to my eyes and its message was crafted beautifully and shone through the film's greatest character: ELSA.
The characters were immensely three-dimensional and each had their own unique charm. The more you view the film, the more detail you see in the background, the art, the characters, the writing/story itself. The film and its themes/plot/character development is deep and layered with so much. Fear was the message here and so was love between family and not just between a man/woman.
Elsa stole the film. She was stunning from beginning to end. Never has there been a more beautiful and compelling female character. She suffered through so much to keep her sister happy and safe. Idina Menzel's voice was perfect for the young Queen; very soothing and soft. Her character was complicated and the most relatable, which is why I think she became (WAS) the true star and why she will be Frozen/Disney's main poster-child for years to come.
Disney loves to make cute animal mascots, and some serve no purpose except for being cute like Pascal in Tangled, but Olaf was different. He served a huge purpose in the film (helping with the sisters bond and being created from Elsa's true love for Anna) and was not just a goofy sidekick.
There is humor throughout but the film succeeds with its touching, heart-felt story of two sisters (Anna and Elsa) and the bond they have.
Frozen deserves its 2 Oscar wins and all the records it has broken and will continue to break. It deserves to be the highest grossing animated film ever and Disney's biggest success ever. The first musical/female directed film/WDAS film to earn $1 billion at the box-office is a monumental achievement. Plus, it went 12 weeks in the domestic top 5. Films rarely last more than 5-6 weeks in the top 5. Amazing! I hope a sequel happens and happens soon (and done right).
Truly the best film of 2013 and possibly the best film in the past 20 years. Walt Disney himself tried to make a story of "The Snow Queen" for years and I whole-heartedly believe he would be proud of this film.
Pure magic. Pure joy. Pure Love. That's Disney's Frozen. May it continue to succeed. Let the Storm Rage On.
