Darkest Hour (2017)
Great Film, Great Diplomacy
Many people have complained that this film does not paint the full picture about who Churchill really was, and that it does not include enough commentary about other countries. And to that, I say that is rubbish.
This film is not about Hitler, FDR, the Canadians, or the Belgians and French that were critical in letting the British escape Dunkirk. It is about Churchill. Plain and Simple.
If you enjoy diplomacy, you will love this film. You feel like you are making every decision with Churchill, and that he truly has to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. Gary Oldman is fantastic, and the secretary is also superbly acted. A little unbelievable in one or two scenes, but its ridiculousness serves to portray Churchill as a ridiculous leader. If you hate Hitler and like Churchill, which is everyone, and you find WWII fascinating, you will like this film
Rogue One (2016)
This Film is Clearly Made Solely as a Cashgrab
The problem with this film is that it was clearly made because Disney bought the rights to this, and are trying to squeeze every dollar out of it. This plot is so incoherent and depends way too much on it being a Star Wars film to be good. I could guarantee you that if this film didn't have the Star Wars brand slapped on it, it would not have as good rankings. It's fine, I enjoyed it, but every review above a 7 I can guarantee you is a Star Wars fan who is excited that a new film is out. The plot is thin, the entire final battle included so many complications solely to make the plot longer, the use of the force was extremely inconsistent, and the decisions of the characters was illogical. It's very weak
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Unexpectedly Great
Hey guys it's Quinn c from YouTube and today we are going to be taking a look at probably the biggest surprise in film in 2014, at least for me; the grand Budapest hotel. Grand Budapest Stars Ralph fiennes as m. Gustave, the greatest concierge in the history of the hotel, and his apprentice, zero, as they more or less steal a painting that they technically earned in a ladies will. They are forced to steal because of the crazy son, played by adrien Brodien, and his from Russia with love, red grant esc sadistic henchmen, played by willem Defoe. But enough with credits, lets crack at it. I saw this movie back in July because I had 100 minutes left in my flight, so I put on the shortest movie possible. It was between this and a romance called *uggghh* the other women. Yeah so dodged a bullet on that one. But anyways, I literally had no expectations for this film, and the cover looked cheesy and I watched it because I thought it would be a good laugh, but for all the wrong reasons.
Little did I know, this movie actually pretty damn funny. But even better then that, the story is a ton of mini movies jam packed into one, which is great for a few reasons. The beginning is a great hotel, then it goes into Thomas crown affair with him stealing the painting, then shawshank redemption in the jail, the fugitive in his escape, and so on. But the great part is that all these sort of mini scenes blend together so well because of one thing, the fantastic acting from Ralph fiennes. I know this will sound weird but he reminds me of Peter sellers in that his acting of course is Great, but the human that he naturally brings just elevates him and his entire film to another degree.
It's the story that makes this movie good, it's the cleaver humor that makes it great. My one little negative about this film is there is this scene when the henchmen is chasing down the lawyer to attend the ladies funeral and therefore steal the painting. Granted, the chase is fun and pretty creepy at times, but when the lawyer is caught, it's just sort of morbid how he's killed. It may just be because I was watching it on an airplane instead of a theatre or at home, but this part just left a foul taste. But besides that, there is so much to enjoy. There's some Great camiós during Gustaves escape from prison, by most notably bill Murray, and the chases itself are on like super speed that it's ridiculous but almost makes it more fun to watch. I love how Gustaves friend from the past keeps bailing Gustave out of jams, such as when Gustave and zero are stops by the German army at a border checkpoint. What is so good about that is that Gustave, throughout this entire movie, is made out to be the greatest guy, and seeing that he has friends not only in other hotels, such as the bill Murray character, the woman who dies and he therefore gets her painting, or the German soldier, it's just cool to see him have so many connections
So overall, just like the wedding ringers in my prior review, this movie was a pleasant surprise. It had a great cast, dr strangelove esc humor, and interesting story, fun camiós, and as a bonus a pretty great theme song. All of the awards that this movie has been nominated for and won are well deserved, because With a score of 10 this is the second best film I saw all year.

Jurassic World (2015)
Fun but overall bad
Hey guys it's quinn c from YouTube and today we take a look at what will probably be the highest selling movie ever, Jurassic world.
But anyways, this film really does have a lot of problems. Because I avoided all of the Jurassic park sequels, I went straight from the original to this film. And honestly the biggest problem with the movie is how they deal with the main dinosaurs. Although the velociraptors were super cool by themselves, the idominous Rex or trex on steroids was so powerful that honestly you kind of knew how this film would play out. And you guessed it, it turned into a straight up monster movie. This film honestly was a more contained version of Godzilla from last year, so instead of Brian Cranston you get chris Pratt, and instead of the guy from kickass you get a cartoonish workaholic aunt and two kids. And besides the fact that there was some really great homages to the first Jurassic park movie, if this film didn't take place in a theme park it would literally be Godzilla.
But there were just a few small things that I completely hated. Product placement is something I don't usually mind, but this film is so blatant that it actually pisses me off. Like every time they drive a car it's basically an ad for Mercedes Benz, they have a closeup shot a chris Pratt enjoyed a tall cool coke, hell a guy talks about how you can buy Jurassic world shirts online. It's just so infuriating and I know they kind of poke fun at it in the movie, but just because you make a joke about it doesn't mean you can just turn around and do it for the next two hours and expect a free pass.
One other really minor minor thing. I've only ever seen this in the trailer for cloverfield, but it felt like whenever they did cgi, and they wanted to emphasize something, like a spaghetti western zoom in shot of the thing would occur. And it's OK to do it once, but it's so infuriating when they do it ever single time someone is about to die, to do this sort of cheep cgi zoom in that only occurs by the way with cgi, to just keep repeating the same style of bad stuff was just lazy and annoying.
And then of course there is the fact that the one lady is running around the entire park the entire film in heels, how the one dinosaur had no thermonuclear reading which I don't think they explained and I still don't think is possible, how they repaired a car when ever possible replacement part has weathered the same as the stuff in the car itself, and I could go on its just you guys get the point.
Now i hate to be a complete Debbie downer it's just I've heard so many people call it the best thing ever that I just want to get a little real with you guys. And to be fair, I did like this movie, it's just for ever cool thing, something stupid or annoying had to happen that sort of ruined the moment. Like there was a really cool sort of video cameo mid way through, the end fight was awesome, and that one dinosaur in the water was by far the most awesome thing I've ever seen. But on the flip side, when all the velociraptors start talking to each other, how one of them saves the day in the cheesiest shot of him running that I've ever seen, and the way over the top, orson wells look alike winner military guy, what I'm saying is is that this movie is a lot of fun, it's just also very stupid.
Overall, I like this film, I really do. The hype is a bit much, but for what it is it's pretty fun. Go see it if you haven't already, even though inside out is way better, but overall, With a score of 6.8, it's fun just not mind blowing.

Whiplash (2014)
Oscar-Worthy
Whiplash. As someone who's in orchestra and plays sports, this movie is like an overkill supercut of my scariest moments. Although some things in this movie you might not get as well if you don't play an instrument, the intensity is still incredible. I've never had a movie where I've been sweating the entire film, and shoot, the drum solo at the end is surely deserving of a 10 flat. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Great Installment
X men days of future past: this film is basically a awesome and ballsy retelling of x men. Now this was only the 2nd x men film I saw, and I was too young to really remember it. So seeing this just blew my mind. I think the clinchers were how they picked up and moved an entire stadium, and of course the quicksilver scene. But god I wish there was more of quicksilver. Hell give him his own spin off, fanboys help me with this it needs to happen. But anyways, 8.9 for the truly kick ass film. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Definitely the Best of 2014
Birdman: what I believe to be by far the best film of this year, birdman is my favorite for 2 reason. 1) I saw it very recently, and the super original story and actually incredible cinematography just flat out blew my mind and 2) going into this mans life, understanding his thought process and such, I haven't had this kind of experience in forever. I love action, as seen by this list, but my truly favorite are films that blow my mind, such as 2001: a space odyssey and more recently, the artist. Birdman is a truly original story, with an incredible performance from one of the best casts in recent history, perfect score, direction, cinematography, and just amazing filming overall. I hate to do this, but the best has to win, and with a score of 9.3, birdman your the champ. Fun fact, apparent Michael Keaton Edward norton and everyone else had a bet to see who would screw up the least and most. Apparently Emma stone screwed up the most, with zach galifianakis of all actors having the most success. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Better 'Apes' Film Since 60s
This film is fun and exciting the whole way through. I'm not gonna lie, I was skeptical of this film going in, but just like guardians of the Galaxy the way this film makes you feel for the animals is incredible. Although there is some fantastic acting (thank you Gary old man), it is the animals that you feel for the most. Although this film didn't sweep the Oscars, in 10 years looking back, 'Apes' will be a film to remember. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Incredibly Underrated
Edge of Tomorrow. A film that a lot Of people, including myself, passed off initially as another Tom cruise money getter, this film has a lot of heart and is really cleaver. It really is the action movie version of Groundhog Day. And although a lot of the major plot points, whether it be him being confused at first, or later him knowing too much which gets him into trouble, do mirror Groundhog Day, edge of tomorrow brings a freshness and own individual look. It's a great action movie, which surprisingly does not feel repetitive even though he's lived the day many times, and overall, Tom cruise is the star that we all deep down love. 8.8 for edge of tomorrow. 22 Jump Street (2014)
A Near Perfect Sequel
22 Jump Street: you know what I think I love most about this film, If I look up this movie on google, I get the street address. It's like it's own little hidden gem for us, because lets be honest 95% of comedies get forgotten 10 years later. So hey, enjoy this series while it lasts. From beginning to end, even including the end credits, this film had me laughing my ass off, I love how the two main characters roles are changed from the original, and it is just a more grand 21 jump street. Although almost no sequel is as good as the original, this one is pretty damn close. 8.7 out of 10 for this little gem. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Fun, a Little Overrated Though
Guardians of the Galaxy- good, not as amazing as people make it out to be, but as we wait for Star Wars episode 7, this was the fanboys substitute. There's nothing too much to say for this, but for what it is, guardians is a really fun film. It's not mind blowing, but groot is a man amount men, and this is evidence that marvel is a juggernaut. If they can make a tree and a raccoon the most popular thing of 2014, then they can do anything. You know what, guardians is just evidence that the music of the 70s 80s region is truly the best, at least that's what I think. That deserves a 8.7 at least, right If you guys want more in depth reviews, please be sure to check me out, Quinn C with the James Bond emblem, on YouTube. The Lego Movie (2014)
Great Film
The Lego Movie: this movie is bloody amazing. I remember seeing the trailer for this a few months before it came out, and I was sure it was going to be awful. Like in comparison i thought the purge anarchy was going to be citizen Kane and this the room. But wow this is fun. I mean the trailer makes it look like a series of flat jokes, but it's really a special story, and the fact that it didn't win the animated Oscar, let alone get nominated, has to be one of the biggest snubs this decade. The Lego movie is a really fun movie that anyone can enjoy, the ending is unexpected but extremely cleaver, and overall just really fun. 8.3 is the number for this one, and sincerely is one of my favorites, and one of the best, of 2014. The Equalizer (2014)
Awesome
The Equalizer: a change of pace film that was sorely needed, this film is Denzel Washington in his quest to reenact the last scene if Skyfall. I really enjoyed this film, and although it isn't anything amazing, it knows what it is. I think the part of this film that summarizes it is when the Denzel Washington character blows up a boat, and it is, no joke, a minute and a half of just replaying the explosion from different angles. Everything that happens is drawn out to a point of amazement, and accompanied by the fact that the crowd in the theatre cheered with me whenever he got a kill, this movie is just a really fun time. Although I think John wick, which we will discuss in a minute, is superior, the equalizer is still great. An 8.0 great. John Wick (2014)
Amazing Action
John Wick: a movie that I watched this past Friday, and as I said, it's the better equalizer. Keanu reeves really kills it in his role as John wick, and it is actually perfect how his character is made. He is like the headshot king, but because of retirement he is just rusty enough where he has a chance of dying. Like superman vs ironman, still effective, but can die with enough force. The lead up to his character is amazing, and the mobsters describing him make John wick sound like Dirty Harry and Jason Bourne in one. An amazing movie, quick yet badass kills, and I'm not saying any to spoil the movie, but just general amazement throughout. I'm just sad that this film will probably get forgotten. So people, tell your friends that John wick is an 8.5.If you guys want more in depth reviews, please be sure to check me out, Quinn C with the James Bond emblem, on YouTube. The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
A Good Time
The Purge: Anarchy- believe it or not, believe it or not, this film did not suck balls like you might expect. Going into it, I was sold, I knew that this film would Be awful, and because youtube is the source of evil, a review was gonna happen. But, this film was actually, dare I say, good. Now I'm an avid hater of horror, but Jesus that really isn't what this film went for, which is what I love. It's like the world war Z of dystopian films. The main guy just goes from one place to another, *bad stuff* hits the fan, he has to leave, and that pattern just repeats. Sounds repetitive, but seeing how all of these various groups of people are changed by the purge is super cool. For pure amazement that this film didn't suck, I'll give it 7.1-7.2 Congrats purge anarchy, you've earned yourself a sequel. Neighbors (2014)
It's Really Funny
Neighbors: this one I actually watched with my parents, and if you've seen this movie, you'll understand why that could get kind of weird. There was really great moments to this film, and honestly it's here more because I just really liked a lot of the films of 2014. The dildo making fundraiser and the insane parties are part of what make this movie hilarious, and it's definitely one watching. Probably better with a group of friends then your family, but either way, this ones good, and gets 7ish. Ride Along (2014)
It's OK, But Fun
Hey guys it's Quinn C from YouTube. Ride along: a film that I had to see twice in the span of 48 hours, this film is really a buddy cop film, but as predictable as possible. Granted, I did have times where I laughed very hard, but there was nothing that stood out in this film. It's fun, but it's not good enough to spend $20 worth of tickets on. I'll give this one in the realm of 6.5; not great, but only watch it if it comes out on netflix. The Interview (2014)
Fun But Pretty Bad
Hey guys it's Quinn C from YouTube. Yes the film that brought the most controversy is by far the least warranted. This film really annoys me because it had so much potential, but at times just ends up trying to find humor in overblown explosions and chases that are funny only cause they are unrealistic. Granted, there are parts I really do like, and I love how they make Kim Jung to be so lovable, just to find out they are being used by him. But of all of these films, there is nothing really memorable about it, and I would probably give it around the 6 range if I had to score it. Certainly worse than boyhood, and yes you can check out that rant on my channel If you guys want more in depth reviews, please be sure to check me out, Quinn C with the James Bond emblem, on YouTube. Interstellar (2014)
My God...
Hey Guys It's Quinn C from Youube. Well first off, the visuals in this film are absolutely stunning. I saw this film in a bad theatre, a dome theater if you've ever been in one of those, but even still the visuals were awesome. CAnd the score, although I believe it to be pretty bad and I'll explain in a bit as to why, but the score literally shook the building, so this film really was an experience more than anything else. I truly believe that this film can only be truly viewed in a theatre.
But my god, it turned ugly for this film real quick. The first reason was the audio was difficult to hear a lot of the times. Not only was there I guy shouting 'WOW' or 'HES BEHIND THE BOOKCASE' who sat next to me, but the score was so damn loud that you can't hear what people are saying. But then again people argue that this film isn't about the dialogue, but the message. Fair enough, fair enough.
My main problem with this film and why I dedicate an entire video to it is because the ending is arguably the most infuriate, devoid of logic, waste of 3 hours of potential that has ever existed on this planet. Heavy spoilers right here, but you've had time for this film so here it is:
After narrowly escaping 'Dr Man', ending the most obviously forced message outside of murf saying 'man is corrupted and destroyed the planet', McConaughey goes into a black hole, unharmed, to send morse code message to his daughter through a book case in another dimension to tell her the secrets to the universe. Through love. He then gets to his daughter, who basically tells him to go away. and then the movie ends. I'll just give a moment for that to soak in.
OK, what is the purpose of having an entire movie based heavily on science, and I mean heavy, just for a series of bull things to occur for no reason at all. First of all, going to the bottom of a pool hurts your head, so how a black hole wouldn't crush McConaughey immediately is beyond me. But fine I'll let it go. Then, to have him send morse code because love permits him, and then to crush the entire theme of the film by having murf flip him off basically just makes no sense. It also doesn't work cause McConaughey doesn't care about his son the entire time, the crew gets screwed because they love people which bits them in the ass, but after all of this love is the only way for McConaughey to send his message to murf at the end.
So what I'm trying to say is that this film is just a bunch of contradictions. It uses science to explain stuff but then uses love to propel the plot, people use love to do stuff but it never benefits them, and love is ultimately how McConaughey gets home, just for him to leave again within 10 minutes.
Now there are parts I love. I thought everything on the ocean planet was great, the robot thing was awesome, and the first 2 hours were great, but the ending is so infuriating and borderline paradox like that the film ends up making no sense.
Now please don't say I don't get the film. I got the film 100%, it's just this movie literally makes no sense. You can't just go into a black hole and survive, and if your father comes back to you after 100 years, you aren't just gonna push him out of the room. The scientists act on emotion, not logic like most all astronauts, and overall, this film just bothers me then brings any joy. Unlike blade runner which I'd probably like after another viewing, this film will always go down as my biggest disappointment of a film; With a score of 5.6, you should just stop watching as soon as mr man dies, trust me.

Gone Girl (2014)
Really Creepy
Gone Girl: god this movies messed up. I would say that gone girl is the Fargo of 2014, with an ending that makes no sense. And spoilers for this one by the way. The one thing about this film that drives is I do not buy the thought process of the Ben affleck character at the end. The entire movie is him hating his wife, seeing her manipulate her, and basically her general awfulness. So that fact that she ends up pregnant, as well as her having one minor monologue, all of a sudden he feels trapped with her. And you can see that when he announces she's pregnant. You can see he's depressed. Why he would stay with her, let alone attempt to make any sort of charge against her. She murdered a guy, it pisses me off. And it is annoying, because the rest of this film is really great. So besides the ending and her general awfulness at the Neil Patrick Harris house. Good film. 7.6 again, cause Jesus Christ I'm never watching this film again. And I guess we learned one thing about women from this. women, you can't live with em... Smosh: The Movie (2015)
Cheap
This is just a typical smosh video, and although I do have to commend the effort, there is just room for improvement. I give this film a six because I know that smosh really did put a lot of effort into this film, and although I personally didn't like it they deserve some props for making this film in the first place. Who knows, maybe I'm just stingy, for I have a YouTube channel myself called 'Quinn C' with a James Bond emblem that reviews films, so if you want to check out more (and may I add much more thorough) reviews of James Bond and film in general, be sure to check me out. As for this film, check it out if you like smosh I guess
Boyhood (2014)
A Gimmick at Best
Hey guys it's quinn C from YouTube and today let's review...Boyhood, the 12 years in the making movie that was actually going to be called 12 years until it was realized that everyone would confuse it with 12 years a slave, stars a fictional family as they grow up from tee children's childhoods until college. That's the setup, now lets rant
For those of you who don't know, screen junkies recently did an honest trailer for this video, and the top comment, left by your truly, was that boyhood is the movie that everyone loves, but deep down hates. And really, that is how I would describe this movie. From a critical view, it's definitely an achievement in its own, but there is just so much I don't like about it that it sort of weighs the movie down for me, let me explain.
One thing in the honest trailer that was noted, which I think we can all agree on, is that if this movie was only made over the course of a few months to a year at most, it wouldn't be that good of a movie. Now for me, the one thing that I love most, besides action galore, is a really firm story, and boyhood just doesn't have one. Granted, it had a theme about maturing, and I know it's supposed to show how this family and really culture grows, but as a FICTIONAL family, there is no reason that some sort of ark can't be created. Literally the movie is the family fitting in to the times, the mom getting married and then getting divorced, and the step dad just being awesome (at least for me, he was my favorite character by far). Just something to add flavor would have made this film so much more intense and interesting. Like imagine if they had a dog, who dies at like year 7, that would have been engaging as hell and would have provided actual change to this family. Hell I watched time cop the other day and every character changes more than this group does, at least personality wise, which is sad if you think about it
Something that really needs to be addressed though, and the reason that this film should not win best picture, even though this film is indeed very good in a critical sense, is that the real time growing up gimmick has been done before. For those of you who don't know, I believe back in the 60s a series of films known as the 7 up or simply the 'up' films, have done this gimmick but with real people. Every 7 years, they check in on 7 people, real people, and it is witnessed how some have achieved success, and some haven't. And these films, I don't think they do anymore, but these films did come out every 7 years. Granted not 12 years like boyhood, but it's more consistent with real human beings
So with that in mind, why should boyhood get best picture. In all sincerity, the film I reviewed last time, the gran Budapest hotel, I believe to be a superior film. If you have a weak story, with a gimmick that has already been done, then why should this film win. For acting, whiplash, night crawler, hell gone girl, could be argued to have better acting. For directing, simple, interstellar. And yes I'll discuss that film in Much Much detail next time. So yes, the cast and crew, as well as tee directing, great job, but what makes a movie great is a great story and message. Lets take an obvious one, citizen Kane. An amazing story of a man growing up, when in the end his happiest days were in childhood with his family. Gret message, great story, incredible movie. Boyhood, a film which it's tough to even prove what the message is, seeing as you can just as easily argue that it's about raising a family as the message was to grow up; the story was weak, and it really wasn't an incredible film, seeing as the gimmick has been done before.
So overall thoughts. In every way that I understand why people think this film is good, I just see it as trite. And I know, it's remarkable that they kept this group around for 12 years, and seeing this family grow, to be honest, at the time, was really cool. I really did love the parents, and they are truly fantastic in their roles and are super likable. But I've had a few months now to digest this film, and so I'll put it as plainly as I can. Besides the clear, obvious fact that the 12 continues years were filmed flawlessly, what makes this film better than the others made this year. I'll point out the ones people rip on. Expendables 3: lets be honest, way more fun movie. Planet of the apes:more engaging charters, story and arc. Godzilla: it was awesome. And that right there is the problem with boyhood. Besides it's deserved praise, going longer than each individual up film ever did; I have never heard someone watch boyhood and say, that movie was awesome. For that reason, which ultimately is how you should scale how much you TRULY enjoy a movie, I'm sorry guys, with a score of 7.1, this is I believe the second lowest rating I have ever given a film
