Maigret: Night at the Crossroads (2017)
Stunning portrayal of a great detective
First off, I must say that I've been an avid fan of British television detectives for many years .. starting with the wondrous (Granada Television) Sherlock Holmes mysteries. As I watched Rowan Atkinson in this episode of the new Maigret series, I was brought back to those days. Though the mysteries take place in Paris, and Maigret is French, I personally have no qualms about the production. To be honest, the thing that irritates me about the great Poirot series with David Suchet, is the fact that his accent is so thick, I cannot understand the dialogue sometimes. With this series, I don't have this problem whatsoever, and that is refreshing. The direction of these Maigret episodes is quite superb, and I quickly become absorbed into the story lines. More than anything else, I am most impressed with the casting of Rowan Atkinson as the lead. As a dramatic actor, his portrayal of Maigret is stunning. His steadfast calm, and confidence in good old-fashioned police work knits the cast together in each episode. He trusts no one, and lets the evidence lead where it leads. This "Crossroads" episode is the best so far, and I am really hoping they continue more of them. I'll be waiting with a bowl of buttered popcorn, knowing I won't be disappointed in any part of the show. Great stuff indeed !! .
Enterprise: Similitude (2003)
Absolutely perfect episode
This episode of Enterprise is absolutely flawless. I've always been a purist when it comes to Star Trek offerings, and have enjoyed every television series except Deep Space Nine, which was more of a sci-fi soap opera. While Enterprise is also a continuing series, being a "prequel" further expounds on the early history of Star Fleet, etc, much to the delight of us Trekkies. The characters are memorable, albeit the series does become rather lackluster at times. This particular episode however, was extraordinary in every way. The writing/story line was well-conceived, and the acting and direction was superb. The continuity of the story was perfect, and the editing was impeccable. I've not seen all the episodes yet (I'm only in the 3rd season) but I doubt I'll see a better one. It is absolutely perfect, and i cannot recommend it enough.
Risen (2016)
He is Risen Indeed
As a Protestant theologian, I rarely go to the cinema to see "Christian", movies, as they are usually not very well done(production wise), have poor acting, and stray from Scriptural intent or the Biblical account of events way too much. With that said, I really only saw two small scenes where this movie veered from the Bible account, ASIDE from using a Roman Tribune as an outsider's perspective. In my opinion, "The Passion of the Christ" movie, though very accurate in portraying the suffering of Jesus, had much more Catholic dogma and heretical content in it than this film.
The players in this work gave exceptional performances, and it was refreshing to see an actor cast in the role of Christ as an authentic-looking Middle-Easterner, instead of a red-haired Irishman as depicted in many other films. I thought the picture was wonderful, and I was unexpectedly moved with emotion, in thinking of my Savior, while sitting in the theater. The wonder of the story, and the beauty of the Mediterranean scenery and other places was most refreshing. I highly recommend this picture to anyone who wants to escape to the world in which Jesus had His ministry, as the sets, costumes, and cultural depictions were dead-on accurate. I loved it, and He is Risen indeed.
The 33 (2015)
Great job
I saw this film today, and thought everyone did a great job. Acting was superb, and the cinematography and direction were excellent. I don't really care much for CGI, so I wont comment on that aspect of the film. The only thing negative I could even possibly say about the movie is that the casting of the actor portraying the President of Chile was questionable at the very least. I truly liked the film a lot though, and I'm especially fond of true-life dramas anyway. It was interesting to get a sense of what actually happened during the 2 months in which the miners were trapped, because there was minimal press in the U.S. at the time the events took place. Its a great movie, and everyone did a great job.
Inspector Morse: The Way Through the Woods (1995)
Tremendous Acting !!
This is my choice for the very best episode of the Inspector Morse series. I've watched all of the series episodes from the beginning, and I noticed right away that the writing and acting improved as each season progressed. The chemistry between Morse and Lewis may have developed slowly, but now I cannot imagine the series casting any better actors for the lead roles. The characters are fallible and believable, and frankly, I never thought I could grow to love a British crime drama. Now, as for this particular episode.. the writing is superb, and the acting is absolutely tremendous. It is truly an edge-of-the-seat thriller at the end. I highly recommend it.
