The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)
One of my favourite films
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a wonderful, amusing and heart warming film. It's good to see a film where the majority of the cast are over 30, and the older people aren't just there as part of the scenery.
This film is the reason I plan to spend my twilight years in India. The scenery in the film is breathtaking and it's great seeing the characters gradually warm to their new surroundings.
I love how the characters all band together to make their new home more pleasant.
Maggie Smith is on top form as usual and I particularly liked seeing Ronald Pickup in this film, having seen him in Waiting for Godot shortly before this film was released.
The Snowman (1982)
Favourite childhood memory
Watching The Snowman as a child was an annual tradition. I always knew Christmas was around the corner when my parents put this on.
every child should watch the Snowman. You only get a few years of truly believing in magic and this film is the best form of magic you can find.
The lack of dialogue, except for the lyrics to "Walking in the air", makes the cartoon even more atmospheric. All the emotion is in the music. Every child who has seen The Snowman dreams of building a magic snowman who flies them to see Father Christmas.
You'd need to have a heart of stone to not be moved when the snowman melts at the end.
Father Christmas (1991)
Wonderful cartoon!!!
I love watching Father Christmas every year. This film is just as good as The Snowman, just for slightly different reasons. The drinking, gambling and mild swearing make it a very funny cartoon, even children will find it quite amusing.
This cartoon seems to be based on two Raymond Briggs books. One of these books shows Father Christmas Delivering presents, the other shows him on holiday.
My favourite bit is when Father Christmas is on holiday, especially when he is in Las Vegas. It's funny to imagine what he would be like the rest of the year.
You, Me and the Apocalypse (2015)
Brilliant
I absolutely love this show. It is very funny and has lots of entertaining sup plots. There have been many twists to the storyline too. The most interesting twist to the story so far (I've seen up to ep. 7) is Father Jude turning out to be Jamie and Ariel's Father. Matthew Baynton is especially good as Jamie/Ariel. It's always easy to tell which twin he is because he manages to portray many differences between the two characters. Megan Mullally is almost unregognisable, she plays such a different character to Karen in Will and Grace. I can't wait to see how this series ends. For example, I can't decide whether that's Jamie or Ariel in the bunker in the opening credits. Maybe I'm over thinking it but it could be either of them.
Ordinary Lies: Pete's Story (2015)
Gripping Drama
I have enjoyed watching Ordinary Lies, a series about lies which quickly spin out of control.
Episode Five is my favourite episode of the series so far. Mackenzie Crook gives a compelling performance as a gambling addict desperately trying to turn his life around.
This episode has many twists, including the discovery Pete (Mackenzie Crook) has a child who his wife knows nothing about. Adding to the drama is the fact that Pete's with is pregnant, having had four previous miscarriages.
I like the way each episode hasn't completely wrapped up the storyline. This allows you to decide for yourself how the characters have resolved their predicaments.
This has been a wonderful series with many notable performances.
3rd Rock from the Sun (1996)
Brilliant series!!!
Thank you Channel 4 for re-running 3rd rock from the sun. Having missed the series first time around it was great to have another chance to discover it. Most people have wondered if aliens will ever visit earth. 3rd Rock imagines what would happen if a family of aliens actually did come to earth. Their mission is to study earth and report back to "The Big Giant Head" via Harry Solomon. Watching the Solomon family attempt to understand humans creates many funny moments. William Shatners' cameos as "The Big Giant Head" are hilarious, especially when The Big Giant Head turns out to be Dick Solomons' father. 3rd Rock also has my favorite TV theme tune. It has a rock and roll feel to it and is always fun to listen to.
