The Gentlemen (2019)
Ritchie in his element
I love Guy Ritchie's gangster flicks, particularly Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and RocknRolla. They are violent, nasty and have that brilliant sense of humour that the British are renowned for. The Gentlemen is a return to that crime/black comedy that Ritchie is known for, although I probably wouldn't class this as much as a black comedy like his previous films, but it is definitely a cool, suave gangster flick. The cast couldn't have been more perfect, Matthew McConaughey is brilliant as the lead, and the other actors, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell and Michelle Rockery (yes from Downton Abbey) are all superb and entertaining in their roles. I have had a lot of fun with this film and have seen it twice already. Definitely a recommendation if this is your sort of picture.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Wasted Opportunity
I am not going to waste time going into plot details, but I felt that although there were bits and pieces of the Rise of Skywalker that I did enjoy (more so than the entirety of The Last Jedi), it wasn't enough fix the mess of the previous film. It felt forced and rushed, and a lot of details that were mentioned in this film could have been explained in greater depth at the beginning of the trilogy. A somewhat disappointing end to a trilogy that could have been far greater.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Cool film but not as good as I thought.
I am a big fan of the X-Men comics and cartoons and was looking forward to this third installment because of the success of the last two films. As most would know the movie is directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour & After the Sunset) because Bryan Singer chose to direct the new Superman movie.
This film has a great plot and plenty of action, however it is disappointing to see that some characters from the first two films have very small parts and even the new characters were not portrayed as well as they should have been. The film though has it's highlights including some jokes and it is great to see that actors such as Kelsey Grammar and Vinnie Jones are doing something different in the film industry.
Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
Such a Classic.
This is one of the very first films that I saw when I was very young. It came one to TV in the early 1990's and back in those days I was scared. As I grew up I continued to watch this film repeatedly and I must admit that this is an absolute classic. It is one of the funniest films I saw that starred one of the greatest comedy duos ever, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. This 1948 classic is awesome and very funny. Abbott and Costello are hilarious and are also supported by two screen legends, Lon Chaney Jnr and the greatest Dracula ever, Bela Lugosi. If people or families want to find a great comedy they should take themselves back over half a century to the world of decent comedies that are suitable for everyone to watch. An absolute must see classic.
Face/Off (1997)
Brilliant. High Class Action.
Possibly John Woo's greatest American film yet. Watching it brings out my emotions from start to finish and the action scenes were done with the style of a master director known as John Woo. Even though he has made some movies that are not that impressive, it seems that he uses the style of A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2, the emotions of The Killer and the action of Hard Boiled, and incorporates all of this to make one awesome blockbuster featuring top actors such as John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. These two actors make the movie work and if Woo used different actors it would not have worked. Travolta and Cage changing roles from good to bad and bad to good is superb as both actors change their emotions as the characters change their identities. A must see for all John Woo and action fans and definitely the movie to have as a collectors item. John Woo's American Masterpiece is worth every dollar you spend on it.
Ong-Bak (2003)
Not as good as they say.
This is what they call the answer to Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. The only problem is that These three actors can ACT while Tony Jaa is not much of an actor himself. I think it was too soon for Jaa to be in a movie such as Ong Bak which is terrible in terms of quality, storyline and acting. The only thing that is good about Ong Bak is the action and some of the stunts. They are impressive but are really annoying when they repeat the same stunt two times. The director is nothing special either. If it was someone like Ridley Scott, John Woo or Quentin Tarantino then the movie would be worth watching. If you think about it, those three directors could do a much better job as well. I have seen many reviews on movies that say how bad the acting was and so on. If reviewers say that, then maybe they should analyse this movie first.
Tombstone (1993)
One Hell Of A Western.
A high class action western with some of the greatest performances in the history of American cinema. Kurt Russell was magnificent and after watching Val Kilmer's performance I was almost crying. The thing I like about this western is that it is different to a lot of the westerns made especially before the sixties. I am not saying that those westerns a rubbish but I do not like the love themes and and the way they set up the romance between the main characters. In Tombstone I thought that it was a western with its own original ideas. With its amazing cast including amazing talented actors Michael Biehn, Sam Elliot and Charlton Heston this film is a must see not just for fans of westerns but also for fans of action movies and movies.
Wake of Death (2004)
One Damme Good Movie!
I have waited for a long time to see a great Van Damme movie. I am not saying that his previous movies were crap but they were almost about the same old thing in terms of martial arts. When I first watched Legionaire I was impressed but I needed more to convince me. Van Damme's recent movie In Hell brought tears to my eyes and I was impressed yet again because he was no the typical martial artist. When Wake of Death came out I was interested and I heard a lot of wonderful things about it. After watching this movie the first word that came to my head was BRILLIANT. Seeing Van Damme try to act seems a bit weird at first but I can tell you that he is a great actor and he is improving in every movie he releases in the future. I am excited to see what he comes out with next.
Sin City (2005)
From Comic to Screen.
An explosive Pulp Fiction style action movie featuring a magnificent cast including Bruce Willis, Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke in this screen version of the graphic novels created by Frank Miller. There are 3 stories about Hartigan, Dwight and Marv and how these characters are driven to revenge and war. All of the characters in this movie are significant in their own way and this movie mixes violence and humour. With brilliant and talented directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez this is a bit of a change when it comes to special effects and action sequences. This movie also features talent such as Elijah Wood, Michael Clarke Duncan, Michael Madsen, Rutger Hauer and Benicio Del Toro. This would have to be one of the funniest action movies of all time.
Brother (2000)
A movie with variety.
The first time I have heard of Takeshi Kitano was when the movie Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman was released into the video stores. After watching it I was interested to see Takeshi's filmography. The next movie of his that I had watched was called Violent Cop and that movie made me even more interested. After watching these two movies I was lead to one of Takeshi's latest films called Brother. I was rather impressed with the variety of actors used in this film and I thought that Takeshi Kitano himself was brilliant. This movie is a type of gangland war movie between the yakuza and the other mafias in America. This is a top quality movie and a must see.
Dip huet seung hung (1989)
One hell of a thriller!
This would have to be one of the greatest John Woo movies that I have ever seen. Chow Yun Fat is brilliant along with the rest of the cast and John Woo is magnificent. I first saw this movie on SBS sometime around 1999 and was almost crying at the end of it. John Woo mixes action and emotion in this tale of loyalty and betrayal about an assassin who accidentally injures a singer during as gun fight. Jeffrey helps Jenny and tries to find a place where she can get cornea transplants. Jeffrey chooses to take one final assignment but is later at war with the triads after his identity was revealed by Inspector Lee who eventually joins Jeffrey in the final epic battle sequence. The action sequences are magnificent and this is a must see thriller for all John Woo fans and action lovers.
