Loot (2022)
Nothing about this is funny
"Loot" on Apple TV attempts to craft a satirical view of the ultra-wealthy through the eyes of its protagonist, played by Maya Rudolf, whose character inherits a vast fortune and suddenly must navigate her new life. The show strives to highlight the absurdities of excess and detachment from reality that often come with extreme wealth. However, it falls short in delivering its comedic intent. Rudolf's character, meant to appear naively out of touch, instead comes off as unintelligent, which detracts from the satire. Personally, I've never been a big fan of Maya Rudolf's comedic style, and "Loot" does not alter my perception. The humor, which is crucial for a show of this nature, misses the mark, making the series feel like an overly drawn-out, laugh-deficient SNL skit. In sum, "Loot" lacks the sharp wit and timing required to make its critique both insightful and entertaining.
Chad (2021)
Actually a 7-8. Had to offset these irrationally low ratings.
I don't understand these low ratings. This show is hilarious. It was created by and stars Nasim Pedrad of SNL fame (I know her best from Netflix's Desperados) who portrays the titular character Chad, a 14 year old boy as he goes throughout his first year of high school. Chad is selfish and often inappropriate but it makes for hilarious television to those with a sense of humor.
Sex/Life (2021)
Severely overhyped wannabe soft-p0rn Lifetime-like series that happens to be on Netflix.
The storyline and characters are completely incoherent and nonsensical, worsened only by the frequent bad acting and melodramatic score, but the storyline is somewhat entertaining so I suppose if you're sexually-repressed enough, you may be able to overlook the very glaring flaws and numerous shortcomings of this (at best) otherwise extraordinarily mediocreseries.
Kirby Jenner (2020)
Hello, it's a parody!
Ignore the low ratings by people who didn't even bother to watch the show or who are too inept to realize that it's a parody. This show is hilarious and incredibly creative! I wasn't familiar with the lead prior to this Quibi show, but apparently he'd been editing himself into Kardashian photos and videos for five years, amassing over a million followers and garnering the attention of Kris and Kendall Jenner, who signed on to executive produce the show. He primarily used several seasons of old KUWTK footage mixed with some new footage of himself with and without Kendall and others to create a show with entirely new story lines in bite-sized episodes.
Holidate (2020)
Much funnier than expected!
I don't understand all the bad reviews because this film was surprisingly funny! The impression I got from the trailer was that it was going to be more cute than funny, but it was a solid comedy - the romance part of the story didn't even come in until the end. Great casting, really good chemistry between the leads, funny from start to end. Great watch when you want a laugh.
Queen & Slim (2019)
Must see!
Most won't get it. Most won't watch it (yet still manage to give 1-star reviews). It's okay because it's not made for the majority who could learn a lot were it not for willful ignorance. This is not for closed-minded people.
Black Panther (2018)
Don't believe the hate; this is at least an 8/10.
Great film and meaningful addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A lot of imdb reviewers have given this film a much lower score than it deserves, citing they don't like the "politics" of the movie. Interesting the same isn't being said of X-men or other Marvel films given their superheroes have always been political, but I digress. I suppose that once immersed in a world filled with black excellence and gender equality, it is easy for some to forget that race is "political" for all people of color. This film's box office success is reflective of how deeply it resonates with people all over the world. Those who allow themselves to accept the viewpoints of others who aren't white will likely find some of the film's universal themes of grief, family, pain, and identity resonating with them as well.
