Palmer (2021)
Very good film
I am quite difficult with films but I actually quite enjoyed this one!
Was it just me but did that extremely talented little boy remind anyone else of what Corey Feldman would have looked like as a child!
Nyfes (2004)
The way all love stories should be portrayed
I remember seeing this movie a few years ago, had enjoyed it immensely & was waiting patiently for it to be shown on TV again. I now remember why I had loved it so much, the setting of the Greek island Samothrace at the beginning, the very realistic & believable love story between Nicki and Norman (who I hadn't known was Damian Lewis the first time I had seen it, & was pleasantly surprised to see him in the leading role), the withheld love between the two & the story that unfolds between them, the tragedy of her friend Haro & many other of the subplots make it into a true masterpiece. I congratulate P.Voulgaris for his great work, I also saw "Mikra Anglia" (Little England)a couple of months ago and truly enjoyed that also. The actors were so believable in their portrayal of their characters, nothing felt exaggerated or overdone, it just all felt natural and real. It does have a sad ending though-none of those Hollywood "happy endings", which also makes it more realistic. I would have liked to see what happened to Norman though...
About a Boy (2002)
One of my all time favorites!
This is absolutely one of my favorite all time movies, I have it in my DVD collection, and whenever I'm feeling nostalgic and want to see a bit of London, hear witty British accents, then this is the film I watch. Nicholas Hoult is adorable in his role as "Marcus", I absolutely adore him, he'll do anything to make his mother happy, he wears the clothes and shoes she makes him wear, eats all the healthy food she makes him eat, sings the songs she likes ("Killing me softly"-has become an all time classic in my house because of this film); Toni Collette plays his crazy, vegan, hippy suicidal mother, when she makes him that loaf of organic brown bread that he kills a duck at the park- is one of our favorite scenes. He meets "Will" (Hugh Grant) who is a self-obsessed bachelor; they both become "friends" in an intricate and funny way, by Marcus practically barging into Will's life, taking over his home after school. Will, being more "hip" and into modern ways, tries to buy new sports shoes for Marcus, after he sees all the bullying and tormenting that Marcus is enduring at school, Marcus ends up going home shoeless in the rain. The entry of Rachel Weisz and her strange son in all of this, is also done in a funny way, and I love R.Weisz in everything she does, she is simply stunning. I love the plot, the London scenes, the whole comical story blends into one that has become a favorite with our family.
Match Point (2005)
Exquisite London scenes
I am not a big fan of Woody Allen and Scarlett Johanson, but this has got to be one of the better films that they have worked in together. Mathew Goode and Jonathan Rhys Meyer were an excellent choice of British actors for this film. The scenes are what I loved most about this movie, centered in and around London: the couples' apartment view of the Thames exquisite, the Tate Modern, the parks, Notting Hill and the English countryside. The storyline is what I didn't quite like, a little predictable at the beginning, I don't want to reveal too much, but Jonathan Rhys Meyers' character didn't make me like him any more, though he played the part to perfection.
The Holiday (2006)
A favorite!
I've got this in my DVD collection and it's a film I've come to again and again, especially around Christmas time. If you're looking for a warm-hearted romantic comedy type movie to see, then this is for you. I love to watch Kate Winslet in everything and anything she does, in this film she portrays the love-lorn Iris who is besotted by her co-worker Jasper Bloom, who treats her like dirt and is aggravatingly blind to his many faults. She switches houses, her beautiful little fire logged cottage in Surrey for Cameron Diaz' stunning contemporary house in the States. I wasn't really a fan of either Diaz or Jude Law, but I quite admired them both in this, they had a sort of chemistry, and their story was funny at times. I just adored his two little British accented girls- they were absolutely gorgeous! Little scenes as in his "home made" tent, "Mr Napkin Head", her life as "trailer" flashbacks, the friendship that develops between Kate Winslet and Eli Wallach's character will definitely touch your heart. The English scenes are also amazing and a big plus when I watch these sorts of films.
Leap Year (2010)
One of my favorites!
This is a film I come to watch again and again, when I'm not in a good mood and want to feel better, when we're sitting around the fireplace with my 2 teenage daughters and want to watch something light, refreshingly heart-warming & funny. I have to admit that the story is not that original but there are a few unpredictable little surprises here and there. What I love most, I think would have to be the amazing Irish countryside, the scenes are spectacular, the cliffs, the castles, the homey little cottages, the pubs... I love the chemistry that the two main characters-Mathew Goode and Amy Adams share, and the funny little scenes that just stick to my mind, such as her trying to plug her phone in and the power goes out in the whole village, how he teases her about "Louie"- her suitcase, the wedding scene when she very nearly ruins the wedding and many many other little scenes... But I also can understand why some Irish people watching this might be slightly? offended- the portrayal of Irish people drinking all day in pubs, there been no form of public transport in rural Ireland, their backwardness and their almost religious belief in old sayings/traditions etc If you can lighten yourself up and watch this, (without been Irish) I really think this is one film that many people can enjoy!
Material Girls (2006)
Worst Hillary Duff movies ever watched
We sat around the TV on a cold Sunday afternoon, eager to watch a good movie, glad that we weren't watching another re-run, and thought "oh great, Hillary Duff!" -we usually enjoy watching her movies, but I need to say that this is definitely the worst one she's played in! If the Olsen Twins turned it down, the Duff sisters should definitely have turned it down too! I don't know which one of the sisters' acting was worse, they were both really really bad. The script was full of racist comments, I wouldn't want any child to watch this and think it was okay to act in the way these two acted. Do yourself a favour and don't waste 90mins+ of your lives watching this, and don't let your kids watch it either!
One Day (2011)
Amazing performances by both actors
This is not your typical love story as it is unpredictable from beginning till end. Both Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess gave amazing, believable performances, and I thought Jim Sturgess played Dexter's part to perfection whilst A.Hathaway's British accent took some getting used to at the beginning. Set in picturesque European cities, needless to say wonderful- London, Edinburgh, Paris all amazing. It actually reminded me a little of "When Harry met Sally", as "One Day" was also based on a 20 year+ relationship between two people, but in a more modern way. Dexter's character evolved from being a rich, nerdy schoolboy, to a not so likable TV host, to a much more likable family man. The ending was not a typical "happy ever after" one that you would expect, but if you're after a mushy love story you haven't seen before, this is the one to see. I guarantee a tear or two in the end.
We're the Millers (2013)
A laid back, funny film
I'm not really into movies that are based on drug dealing, stripping etc but I quite enjoyed this one. If you want to lay back for a little over 100minutes and not have to think too much, just have a good little laugh with the family, then this is the film for you. I have to admit that I like Jennifer Aniston in almost anything she does, be it funny, sometimes dull & awkward, this is one of her more comical moments. I also enjoyed Kenny's performance- Aniston's "adopted" son; he added a touch of reality, teenage awkwardness, & funny bits into the film, especially with the teaching him to kiss & spider scenarios. Needless to say my teenage daughters really enjoyed it, a lot more than me but it was pretty good for it's kind.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
A mi sh mash of many movies together
Okay, okay I will admit, that the one and only of reason that I chose to watch this movie, was that Jim Sturgess was in it, and there are not a great many movies out there which he has played in, so 2 out of my 2 points go just to his amazing performance, which as you have guessed, was about the only positive thing in this movie. The fact that Hugh Grant, Tom Hanks were also starring in "Cloud Atlas", made me want to watch it a little, but I guess all good actors have their bad days. Halle Berry, well, I don't know about her performance, maybe one raspberry award wasn't enough for her, don't know how they missed out giving her one here too! (I have to admit here that I personally don't think she really deserved it in "Catwoman") When watching a movie, I like to know when there is a beginning, a middle an ending- with this one, I really didn't know where/when/what on earth was going on, and there was just no ending to the whole thing, it just kept going on and on...for 3 whole hours! I must admit the scenes were very believable, the make-up a little over the top (especially seeing my beloved Jim Sturgess as Asian, it didn't quite convince me!) (but don't get me wrong- his acting did!) Anyway, don't think I'd be able to watch it again, a waste of 3 hours of my precious time!
