The Lion King (2019)
Dreadfull cgi
Absolutely ruined the original the only redeemable quality was the music. Bad CGI looked nothing like a real animal and they did not capture the charm and emotion being the original animation. The characters were boring and showed absolutely no personality, seeing as this is aimed at a younger audience as most Disney films are this makes no sense as children like emotion on the faces of characters as this is how they understand what is going on. Just watch the original, it is much better and you can really empathise with the characters and the world that is designed around it looks much better despite it's old technology.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Disappointing
I had really been looking forward to this film, the trailers made it look amazing, but alas, they're the best part of the film.
If one ignores the implausible start of Maverick surviving his plane disintegrating at hypersonic speed, the rest of the film is almost a shot for shot remake of the original film is, albeit with the Star Wars "canyon run" scene at the end.
From the nauseating scene in the bar with the new recruits not realising it's their future instructor they are taking the micky out off, to the obligatory topless volleyball scene, I thought the copying of these iconic scenes from the original was unnecessary.
To add drama to the film they pretend the American fleet airarm (the most technologically advanced in the world) is somehow outgunned by a nameless enemy using 5th generation fighters.
As I said before, the ending is a ripoff of the climatic end to Star Wars, so is completely predictable.
Not a bad film, particularly if you haven't seen the original or Star Wars, but I was expecting much better.
The Luminaries: The Place You Return (2020)
A great gothic tale
Ignore the negative reviews complaining about a confusing plot, if you can follow a Christopher Nolan film you can follow this. There's a fantastic cast, it's brilliantly acted and the cinematography is amazing, creating a feeling of uncanniness. There should be more of this type of thing on tv
Assassin's Creed (2016)
A bit meh really
I haven't played any of the video games and if they're anything like this film I won't bother. The whole "genetic memory" thing has already been flogged to death by the Underworld movies. It's use in this film is absurd. If one ignores this then the rest of the plot is pretty nonsensical too. It's difficult to understand how such a talented cast could have found themselves in such an average movie...some of the fight scenes are ok though
A Dog's Journey (2019)
Absolutely fantastic
A poignant, heartwarming film, beautifully scripted and acted and a fitting follow-up to the original. You would need a heart of stone not to be moved
A Christmas Carol (2019)
A fantastic and oroginal adaptation of a well known story
I thought this was a brilliant adaptation of the classic Christmas story. Much darker than usual, with a fantastic cast who are all at the top of their game. It's beautifully filmed, a true gem.
La vie d'Adèle (2013)
Superbly acted, terribly edited
I went to see this film after a colleague had recommended it and I must say I was very disappointed. The acting is fantastic, Adele Exarchopoulos is a revelation, but it is really only her performance that makes the film worth watching. At three hours long it could have had an hour cut out and been a better film for it. Someone else has said there's a total of 30 minutes of sex scenes; well, if that's correct its about 20 minutes too much. The sex scenes are gratuitous and become an over indulgence. For large parts of the film nothing happens, for example, there are a number of scenes where Adele is teaching - these add nothing to the plot. Prior to this we see her go on student marches, nothing of significance happens. Her male friend is gay - a tired cliché! The whole of the last scene is made redundant by the scene before. Irritatingly one of the significant moments of the film is cut short - the cause of Adele having a fling with a male colleague is skipped over even though this has dire consequences. Frankly, "Lost and Delirious" covers similar ground but does it much, much better. Films are about telling stories and that art has been lost in this movie to such an extent I was glad when it came to its end.
Lost and Delirious (2001)
A sensitive portrayal of adolescent angst and love in a girls boarding school
I came across this film whilst channel hoping and so wasn't expecting very much; however, I was soon enthralled by it. The subject matter could have easily been exploited and the filmed turned into something seedy, but instead it is a sensitive portrayal of the difficulties of overcoming loss and rejection. The fact that the two main protagonists are female is incidental to the story of love and heartbreak and tragedy that unfolds. It is very well acted by all the cast, but Piper Perabo and Jackie Burroughs deserve particular mention. The ending is poignant and heart-rending, one can not failed to be moved by it. This film is everything that "Blue is the Warmest Colour" tries and fails to be.
