Ku bei (2021)
Violence compilation with some humorous moments
I used to love my video nasties, and still have a soft spot for a gruesome horror movie. So on reading some reviews I decided to watch. The younger me would have loved this. But the older me was just ok with it.
A kind of fun ride, waiting to see what the crazies would do or say next... I mean there's hardly a story or much of a plot so it's more a compilation of violent scenes.
The problem is that you kind of get desensitized to it as you go along. So by the end you are kind of shrugging.
It's worth a watch if you are into the violent/zombie genre (I know there are no zombies here but it reminded me of a shock zombie flick from back in the day). I just dont think it would be a movie I'll revisit in the future.
Free Guy (2021)
Great afternoon action adventure
Ryan Reynolds was born to play these parts. I'd hesitated watching this for a while, but Saturday afternoon I did and absolutely loved it.
Good story, action, characters and adventure. You don't need to have played open world games but it definitely made it more enjoyable for me.
Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer are great (as are the rest of the cast).
Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins (2021)
Not a 10/10 but I enjoyed it
It's silly, it's violent, it's full of swearing, it's good fun!
Craig did good as usual, nothing wrong with Vinnie's performance. Seeing Vinnie Jones and Craig Fairbrass square off is a buzz.
Look, it is silly but done well for what it is.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Fun action. Great Entertainment. Loved it.
This is a fun movie. Yes, it has a very obvious, in your face sentimental father - daughter relationship, in the midst of a war with aliens that would give Ripley a run for her money. Mix that with some stereotypical characters and wrap it in a time-travel blanket.
This is a great action movie, the aliens are nasty and I liked the good guys. Thought there was good suspense throughout, and yes, I like OT sentimental in these summer blockbusters.
Remember - this was made as a entertainment, not to win a scientific nobel prize.
I love time travel movies, yes there are paradoxes throughout, I was thinking about all of them all day and will for a while... I mean that's what makes time travel/loop films fun isn't it?
Thinking of other movies... If you think Independence Day feel, but mix with Aliens, war of the worlds, Starship Troopers (and yes thought it was thankfully graphic and scary in places - I always have doubts of a film with a 12 rating)... Look, the time travel isn't as good as say the loop in Edge of Tomorrow - Live Die Repeat, but I think you know the type of movie we're talking about here.
Dont expect too much, grab a bottle of beer, turn the lights down and just let yourself roll with it. You deserve a bit of an escape dont you?
Savages (2012)
Good film, I enjoyed it
Good suspense, good action, good story, good characters.
I almost skipped this because of the bad reviews here, 1 star? Seriously? Thankfully I reminded myself that reviews shouldnt steer you away from a movie you like the look of, and most reviewers seem to either down a film because they dont like the genre, or they are looking for the movie of the decade.
If you're in two minds, just roll with this movie, you wont be disappointed.
Unhinged (2020)
Dont know what the bad reviews are about
After reading the reviews here I expected a bad movie with poor decision making. It was agood film for what it is, which you know from the title.
The main actress didnt make any very poor decisions, even including the initial confrontation. You dont mess with a frustrated, tired, stressed parent on the morning school run. Also during the pandemic many people choose to not social distance or wear a mask despite scientific advice that could save lives. Now to me that's far more unbelievable than any decision the charaters of this movie made.
In all, it was a good horror/thriller with a good fast pace that you dont have to think about too much. Just right when your a tired, stressed parent.
Wish Upon (2017)
Worthy Addition To The Making-Wishes Horror Sub Genre
Just as with WishMaster (1 & 2) and The Monkey's Paw - a wish is normally not free, nor exactly what you expect.
The wish maker in this case is a teenage girl who wants to be part of the cool gang. The main character gets the sympathy, but she's no Carrie White. As she digs herself a deeper hole with each wish we wonder how she's going to get out.
Whilst obviously this is not going to be original throughout it does capture the imagination, is well made with a competent set of actors and backstory.
I will watch this one again as it was quite a fun horror movie. I found this a better movie than the monkey's paw (which just descended into a low rate slasher flick fairly quickly). Wish Upon is one of those movies you can put on late at night when you're just too tired to sit through a high end Oscar worthy movie.
Widows (2018)
A Good Solid Drama/Thriller
What do expect from a screenplay by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl), based on a novel by Lynda La Plante (Prime Suspect) and directed by Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave) - A well written, entertaining & professional movie with strong female characters.
A heist movie where the partners of a robbery gang who were killed on a job decide to take on the next big heist themselves, amidst an election campaign, double dealing and street gangs.
With strong characters and actors throughout the story does not descend into farce as the synopsis may suggest. Relatively realistic and enough side plots to warrant the run time.
The only thing I can say as a negative is that I don't think this one has great replayability. It is a solid entertaining heist movie worth 2 hours of your time (if only for just one viewing).
The Bye Bye Man (2017)
Solid Horror Movie
There are a few horror movies that are good to rewatch now and again, because they're fairly interesting and have something about them. I would put this one in that category.
Never boring, the plot moves along nicely. The main characters work well and the overall acting isn't as bad as other reviews have said (I must admit the girlfriend is not going to win an Oscar though). The bye bye man is an effective nastie with a few tricks up his sleeve.
Some have said this is a teen movie, maybe because I'm early 40's, I didn't know if they meant it has teens in it (most by the numbers horror movies are) or if it was a 12 rated made for teens horror, thankfully it wasn't the latter.
Here we have a supernatural baddie vs a small group of friends and a police woman trying to piece it all together. Not original, but enough quality that it will certainly not be a waste of your time.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Long, Fun and Silly in places
Part 2 following on from Part 1 Infinity Wars - how can the universe be saved? This keeps you going to see how it will end. However, it is over long. Again it has suffered from having too many characters in it. Some just did not have to be in the movie at all.
I still enjoyed the movie, good special effects, some character development that raises an eyebrow or two. Good evil guy (I must have been tired because by the end of it I thought he was starting to make a lot of sense).
A lot of people have said it's boring, but I wasn't particularly bored. I liked the focus on Jeremy Renner's character and plight, in fact they could have focused more on his character (particularily on earth and his own clean up operation - which would have created more interesting questions versus Thanos' agenda), cut three or four other characters completely (Thor for example), cut the "silly comedy" elements by 2/3rds and you'd have had a darker movie I would have loved.
By the end, you are just glad you've gotten to the end credits. I doubt it will be worth a second viewing.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
A Fun Ride
This is not one of the best superhero movies for me, probably because I'm not a big fan of putting so many characters from the "universe" in one movie, be that dc or marvel. After getting over myself and the fact that spiderman is in space... I watched it for what it was, a fun special effects action movie of good vs evil. It is definately evil they are fighting...
A little long perhaps, but cramming all of the characters in here from avengers, guardians of the galaxy and so on, then it has to be.
It's a fun ride and worth a watch. Whilst a good stand alone movie, it does set you up for part two, even referring to "End Game". So despite its flaws I'll certainly watch Endgame.
Blood Simple (1984)
Tense, Stylish, Masterpiece
Every single scene is a tense masterpiece. Set in rural Texas it's a story of double crossing and revenge. This stylish noir thriller has a number of haunting scenes that will stay with you forever.
If you are a fan of No Country For Old Men or The Man Who Wasn't There, also by the Coen Brothers then you will appreciate this movie.
Even though the film was made in the mid-eighties it still holds up today, it could have been released this year.
The excellent track - It's the Same Old Song by the Four Tops features on the soundtrack and is a superb choice. It works well in contrast to the slow tempo and seedy elements of the story.
I decided to only rate a handful of movies a 10, so that i could condense down my favourite movie list of all time. This is one.
Hell or High Water (2016)
Excellent Modern Western/Crime Drama
Two brothers are robbing banks with different motives as the law closes in. Set in modern day rural Texas the brothers must stay one step ahead of the law whilst dealing with Texas locals who aren't afraid to defend their towns.
A highly enjoyable movie. All of the cast does a great job, providing some tense scenes mixed with a little humour here and there too. A solid crime drama that is well worth watching.
I really enjoyed Thunderbolt and Lightfoot with Jeff Bridges, another modern western about robbing banks from the 70s. This time Jeff Bridges plays it more serious as the retiring policeman as opposed to bank robber.
Chris Pine does a good job proving he can turn his hand to more grittier roles.
I am a big fan of the coen brothers movies Blood Simple and No Country For Old Men. For me this movie will go on the same shelf.
After recently whetting my appetite for westerns again with the sisters brothers, this movie has left me wanting to watch more.
Escape Room (2019)
Horror Lite
Despite a good polished production this movie did not have the same shock values or seedy undertones of similar movies such as "Saw" or "Cube".
I see this as a "Saw" or "Hostel" lite. Like "The Hunger Games" was to "Battle Royale".
Being an "escape room" I would have thought that the viewer may have been able to try and figure out a few riddles along the way, but there's no mystery or thinking required for this one.
Who cares if the plot is unoriginal for this type of movie. As a claustrophobic horror movie where the characters are killed one by one by puzzles you would expect some more imagination and shock values.
I watched it to the end, so it kept me interested late at night.
Not sure why this has a 15 certificate. Maybe there was some bad language I missed. I might have liked it more if I was 12. I'm 42.
RoboCop (1987)
The Director's Cut Is Excellent
A movie I'll watch every few years, Robocop 87 was always a guilty pleasure.
After being injured on duty Alex Murphy is transformed into a cyborg policeman programmed to fight crime without any memory of his past life. Whilst hunting the police killers responsible for taking his previous life Alex Murphy struggles coming to terms with his new existence.
The director's cut contains extended over the top violence that emphasises that the movie does not take itself too seriously and contributes to the black humour.
Similar movies would be "Starship Troopers" and "Dredd". If you get a chance to see the director's cut then I would definitely recommend it after the kids have gone to bed. Don't be put off if you have only seen the remake that was clearly aimed at a younger demographic.
Simply fun adult entertainment.
Bird Box (2018)
An Enjoyable Global Pandemic
I remember being disappointed after watching "The Happening" - mainly because it felt as though all of the action and mystery peaked in the first third of the movie. Bird Box kept me interested throughout and I was not disappointed.
It felt to me like a mix of elements from The Happening, A Quiet Place and the claustrophobic group dynamics of The Walking Dead. All told from the perspective of Sandra Bullock's character.
Some of the mystery of what is happening stays with you after the movie. This is no bad thing. It is something to discuss and debate. "What did you think was happening?"
The Girl on the Train (2016)
The best whodunit I've seen in a while
I really enjoyed this movie. Emily Blunt and the rest of the cast were excellent.
The movie flashes back and forth in time, so you need to concentrate, which is no bad thing.
I am struggling to understand the very negative reviews, unless it is all about the differences to the book. A book and a movie are different mediums. Promote the book by all means but not by downgrading a perfectly good movie in its own right.
I wish there were more cerebral thrillers of this calibre out there.
