The Dark Tower (2017)
Terrible...
If you enjoyed the Dark Tower book series, you will undoubtedly dislike this film strongly. It was nothing like the books - it felt rushed, poorly written, and completely underdeveloped. Everything the readers came to care about in the books, from the intriguing history of Roland's world to the complexity of the characters, was altogether ignored for the film. Other than the character's names, Stephen King seems to have contributed nothing. Those who created this film should be ashamed. After watching the Dark Tower, I realized I had just seen nothing more than a weak imitation of Schwarzenegger's Last Action Hero.
Sabotage (2014)
So bad.
This film is absolutely terrible. The main plot point makes very little sense, as the basis for the film is precipitated by a completely unnecessary risk taken by the elite DEA task force.
The characters are abysmally written. Each one has fully embraced their "gutter trash" personas so that they can be the "best undercover agents in the DEA". The result of this is that every member of the team is completely unlikeable, a trait which extends even to Schwarzenegger's John 'Breacher' Wharton, and I found myself not caring in the least when a character was killed off.
The female characters in the film were unattractive, in every respect.
Please keep in mind, Schwarzenegger is my favorite action star. End of Watch is one of my favorite films. I greatly enjoyed Harsh Times.
Did it seem like the filmmakers made an effort to incorporate realistic room-clearing tactics into the film? Yes, and it should always be appreciated when consultants with actual experience in a field are hired to contribute to a film's authenticity. But it doesn't compete with the nonsensical storyline or the forced, unbelievable interactions between the static, uninteresting characters.
This film is absolutely terrible.
Transcendence (2014)
Better when it was called "The Lawnmower Man"
Well, this was a waste. If you've seen the 1992 film "The Lawnmower Man", then you've seen a better version of "Transcendence". That's right - Jeff Fahey outdid Johnny Depp.
If you've never seen that movie, then you might say this film starts out with a relatively interesting concept; however, it ends in a "twist" that doesn't really make any sense based on the actions of the characters in the preceding 115 minutes of the film.
Not one of the characters is interesting or likable, the pace of the film dragged, and all the members of my party seemed to be waiting eagerly for the film to be over.
Don't waste your time or money.
Silent Hill: Revelation (2012)
Unwatchable.
This movie is absolutely horrible. The costumes are bad, the digital effects are on par with a low-budget television show, and the acting is atrocious. The relationship between the two main characters is beyond forced. Based on their acting abilities, both Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington must have had very good friends in casting to obtain these roles.
I remember watching a teaser for this film, and the effects supervisor was excited about his department-store dummy monster. The creature was poorly conceived and executed even worse.
If you enjoyed the first Silent Hill movie (even if it didn't make a lot of sense), please avoid this film at all costs. A complete waste of time.
The Wicker Man (2006)
This is quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen.
The other night, I was trying to think of the worst movie I've seen in my life. No easy task, to be sure, as I like to think that every movie made has some redeeming quality. Even if a movie has horrible acting, that's not the writer's fault. That would be the fault of those casting the film, or the director. If there are plot holes, that could be the writer's fault, or it could the person doing the editing. However, when the movie makes no sense, has terrible acting, and leaves you feeling angry after watching it, then the question becomes - whose fault is it? Maybe everyone involved in the project royally screwed up. Or maybe it's my fault for watching it.
It was funny to see that the main review spoke of people being "angry" after watching this movie. I'm not sure what it was, but I have never been so infuriated after watching a film. My girlfriend (who slept through it) was surprised by my visceral reaction - but it appears that I was not alone!
This movie is absolutely terrible. It is made even more so by the fact that it has no reason to be, in that it cannot blame a lack of a budget on such things as bad costumes or acting.
"The Wicker Man" very well might be the winner of the "Worst Movie I Have Ever Seen" contest. Bravo, Nick Cage, bravo. Bravi, bravi, bravissimi!
Lat sau san taam (1992)
Possibly the Best Movie
Hard Boiled is by far my favorite John Woo film. Chow Yun-Fat gives an excellent performance as "hard-boiled" Tequila. This movie has better, more explosive gun battles than any other action film! While the storyline isn't that creative, and the relationship between Tequila and Teresa Chang is not developed, it is one hell of an action film. The special effects are great, and the actions sequences can only be described in one word - art. Chow is a beautiful man, but this is nicely complemented by Tony Leung Chiu Wai, who plays Alan. Mad Dog, played by Philip Kwok, is a great and evil-looking villain. As with most of John Woo's films, there is a gratuitous amount of explosions and violence, enough to satisfy even the most voracious of appetites!
