For those claiming that the show dropped the ball at its 2 attempts to end the show, you missed the whole point. Dexter was never the "Good Guy". That's exactly why he was never hailed to be a hero ever in the show.
All we ever heard was the justification from Dexter's perspective. How he thinks that he has channelled his 'Dark Passenger' for the good & how he is making the world a better place. The whole idea was to understand the justification, and even empathize a bit, but at the end of the day, what he did was still wrong. He put many innocent people at risk, and even cost a few of their lives too. He was always supposed to die at the end. Towards the end, he even gets a bit psychotic where his sane side (depicted by Deb) begged him not to lead his son down the same road. He made up excuses to himself thinking there was no other way. To be honest, we even saw glimpses of him being relieved and happy when he "helped" Harrison.
Dexter was a flawed human being, not just by his dark tenancies, but also his personality.
I think that the team gave the character the perfect ending. He always wanted his son to live a good life, and having Harrison pull the trigger added extra value by characterising that Harrison is better off without Dex (or his way of living) in his life. This cannot be a coincidence.
