All the haters need to take a breath
3 January 2023
Few things are harder than bringing a well lived kids book to film. People who love the source material won't be happy. But they are forgetting---its based on an idea or book or adapted from source material. Being able to see another person's vision requires an open mind. That seems rare around here.

This was fine. It told a good story and showed kids that it's OK to be scared. Some action didn't mange perfect sence, but that's OK. The voice acting was good and I liked this style of animating. It's a nice change from extreme cgi. I loved the ending song, too. I knew the book, and I still liked the film. Nothing wrong with that, if you think wth an open mind.

A must see for all serious fans of Lemmon, Curtis, Falk, or Edwards
22 August 2012
A solid 8 rating from me. This is a must see to any fan of Edwards or any cast member.

Sure it's long and drives off course a few times, but Lemmon and Falk hold it all together, and of course Wood and Curtis are eye candy for guys and gals. The sets are lavish, the kind you rarely see these days. The music by Henry Mancini is perfect, even the sort of stuck on love ballad.

They don't make 'em like this anymore and it's just a shame. I have no idea why this movie isn't on more top lists for people.

It's just good entertainment.

Horrible, terrible, awful--should I go on?

Warning: Spoilers
Do not bother with this movie. I don't have to worry about spoilers, because the ending is telegraphed from the onset. This is typical Sandler fare, saved only by the great timing of Kavin James. James acts circles around Sandler and delivers on his lines despite them having been taken out of the trash heap. This will go down in history as one of the most poorly written Sandler movies of all time. Wooden typecast characters abound and the cameos of Sandler regulars cannot save a single one of them, with the exception of Rob Schneider as the man who marries the two firefighters.

It looks like they said lets make a gay movie with Adam Sandler. They began to film it and before you know it it was done and someone had to make it work. It doesn't. Lame scene after lame scene, the jokes are phoned in and Sandler spends half the movie insulting James. Complete with annoying kids and a love interest where Sandler gets to pretend he is goofy, and you have a dull, unfunny movie that should have bypassed the theaters and gone right to DVD. Even at it's best when the friendship of the two men is tested, it just doesn't work due to Sandler's cardboard performance.

It is what it is---a sweet movie for kids
18 February 2005
Sure there are some things wrong with it...but if you have kids who need to learn how to go to a longer movie that actually wants them to listen, and think, and be able to sit still without waiting for the next 'hot, annoying thing' to repeat for the next two months, this is a good movie. It is a family film, and well done, for the most part. It looks a little like it could have been an after school special. The direction of Wang seems slow and deliberate, probably because he loved the book or has kids who do. My daughter, too old to be reading the book now, read it again a month ago and she said it follows the book closely, and was not disappointed.
