Shimmer Lake (2017)
7/10
Netflix does it again
21 June 2019
All the ingredients are there for a great movie. Great acting, great story, humor, plot twist, and delivered in reverse time like the movie "momento".

Shimmer lake is about a local sheriff who is hunting down 3 bank robbers(one of which is his own brother).

The acting was great to me. Especially rainn Wilson. It was as if Dwight Schrute quit Dunder Miflin and helped rob a bank! How can you not love it? Add in Benjamin walker, the beautiful Stephanie sigman, Ron Livingston, and John Michael Higgins and you've got yourself one hell of a cast.

The plot isn't all that great but by being shown in reverse chronological order, it really helps intensify everything. You really have to pay attention in order to really follow along and understand what happens.

What really set it off for me was the plot twist in the end. Many may have seen it coming but I thought they did a really good job setting it up. I, for one, was shocked and totally didn't see it coming. There's moments of humor sprinkled throughout. At first I didn't find it all that funny but it gets better as it all plays out.

Overall, I'd say it was a great movie that's definitely worth checking out. I'd recommend it to pretty much anyone.

Not much of anything to take from it
20 June 2019
I too grew up a "lost child", not really any sort of direction or sense of purpose, so I really wanted to like this one. The acting is very well done. Everyone felt very natural and pure. Where it loses me, is almost 3 hours of pointless film. I wasn't left wondering about life or some greater purpose. Go follow a group of 17 year old kids around for a few hours and you'd have basically seen this one.

Missed mark by Sandler and Co.
19 June 2019
First, I'll start out by saying I love Adam Sandler movies. I also love Jen Aniston movies, and my god, she's a gorgeous woman. I went into this one, like most happy Madison films, not knowing which side of Sandler we'd get. After watching, the best way I know to explain my experience was boredom, with a few chuckle out loud moments. For me, this one doesn't appeal to my juvenile-like senses, where as most of his films do. I thought the acting was fine and I really enjoyed the "clue" aspect of the film. It was just entirely too slow and quit honestly, just down-right boring. It's worth a watch to me. If you suffer from insomnia and are looking for something to help you drift off the bed, this might just do the trick.

C+ for your efforts
12 June 2019
Lots of big names in this one. I like the story line and I feel like they did a decent enough job developing the characters without diving into their whole life story. This wouldn't be a 3 hour movie worth watching. The pace starts out fine. Seems to flow at a nice, steady pace. It's not until the climax of the movie does it start to get slow. There's many plot holes but it's an action movie meant to entertain, not necessarily be realistic. Some of the holes are forgivable, some not so much. These guys are supposed to be seriously trained professionals, "warriors", as they put it, but make some decisions that I don't think 10 year COD players would make. One thing I really enjoyed was the shooting scenes, aren't overly unrealistic. Too many times you see movies where guys are running through showers of gun fire with no cover and come out the other side unscathed. This movie feels realistic to some like myself, who is untrained in the arts of war. Overall, I'd say it's worth a watch. There's good acting and a great music selection.

Don't push the button or 2 hours of your life will disappear
11 June 2019
I'll start the review by saying that I didn't dislike the movie. I actually think the concept was quit original, it held my attention, and there were moments of real works of art. That being said, this film falls flat on its face. Some parts are cheaply forced and make you accept things for being what they are. I feel like the director is saying "it's my movie and I'll give you tidbits of nonsensical storyline and you will accept them."

Diving into the movie itself, as stated before, I really enjoyed the plot of the story. I felt as if the buildup of the characters was done in a tasteful way. Thorough with a hint of mystery but not overly drawn out like a lot of movies are. As everything starts to play out, it takes a turn out into left field. Things start getting very odd and nonsensical even for a Sci-fi flick. By the end, well there is no end. It ends so abrupt and the only questions you're left with are pointless. That's what I think really pushes me to really disliking this one. I love movies that leave me puzzled and questioning what exactly happened. I enjoy things being left up to me to figure out what exactly happened. With "the box" I was left, not so much confused as to what happened, but as to why a film with such potential was wasted.

The meaning behind the movie is simple to figure out. I feel like anyone with a conscience can figure it out. There's nothing left to sit and ponder. There's nothing left to talk about. It all just comes to an abrupt end with nothing but pointless storyline to question.

All in all, I'd say don't waste your time. If films that leave you wanting more, or leave your mind blown is your thing, save yourself some time and watch inception. If you like movies with color by number plots and the end discussion to be, "I wonder what happens to the characters at the end", then maybe this ones for you.

Potential that falls short with terrible ending
20 February 2019
I went into this movie having never heard of it. It wasn't until reading reviews that I learned it is actually a remake. Regardless, this movie had some potential but I feel as if it took a turn into left field somewhere. Movie starts out fine, and is actually suspenseful 3/4 of the way in. The ending just has me dumbfounded. I understand it completely but was that really the best ending they could come up with? I also felt this movie was too short. At just over 1:30:00, I felt as if another 30 minutes, and better writing would have really made this flick better. It isn't unwatchable but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, that's for sure.

What am I missing?

I can't be the only one scratching my head at the ratings on this movie? I've seen tons of movies and I'm far from a movie critic, but #43 highest rated movie? Of all time? Look don't get me wrong it's a good story. The acting by J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller are phenomenal. It certainly has its moments. Good film in regards to promoting determination and perseverance. #43 best movie of all time though? Maybe I'm not that big a fan of jazz?

Wake up guy!
17 February 2017
I'm gonna give this movie a 7 out of 10. I've never really heard about this story before. I was pleased to find out it was based on true events, although I'm not sure exactly how loosely based it was.

What a roller coaster ride this was. Edmund Kingsley did a phenomenal job of capturing his role and making you feel as if you were right there with him. Just when you thought there was gonna be a horrible ending to a good movie, there's a twist that you may or may not have seen coming. I know I sure didn't. Good watch that I could see myself watching again

Driven by success
17 February 2017
Ahhh, gold. Who doesn't dream of success and money. What a refreshing watch this movie was. After research, I found that this movie was really loosely based on actual events, but it was just so well done that I think we can give this one a pass.

Matthew McConaughey was brilliant as always. I watch my fair share of movies, and like most, I get my hopes up from trailers and reviews only to be let down more times than not it seems these days. I didn't have any urgency to watch this one but I'm reality it should have been at the top of my list. I do think mcConaughey made this film what it was to be honest. Not to take anything away from the writers and directors but he just has a way of making you believe his character so much. It's like he was born to play the characters he plays. I mean the world was against Kenny Wells but he had this passion and drive that only mcConaughey can capture so well.

Overall great movie, I give it a 7.9 because I save my 8's for truly stand up and clap, blow your mind films but this one is definitely up there. A movie I could watch time and time again.

Surprisingly Decent
17 February 2017
First thoughts were, this is gonna be a low budget, lackluster film, without any big-time actors. Luckily, I was wrong. It's by no stretch of the imagination great. I could hardly call it good even, but there's just something about it that kept me intrigued.

With the exception of Clifton Collins jr., who I really first noticed in the experiment, I didn't really recognize any other actor. After a couple name searches, I remembered Gabriel Luna from Harley and the Davidsons. I've seen quit a few movies johnny Simmons has started in but he just doesn't stand out to me.

Plot was good. Story line was good enough to keep me interested. Felt like there were a lot of "are you serious" moments. Especially in Gabriel Luna's part. Can't say what I'd have done in his shoes but I'd like to think it's not what he done. Also felt like the ending was rushed and then they realized they still had 15 minutes of film left or something so let's just throw something in there to wrap this up.

Overall a pretty decent watch. Not something to write home to the family about but a little hidden gem if you will amongst over-hyped films that fall short.

Beautiful band of misfits
16 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After finally taking the time to watch the film, I was overall pleased with it. I've never seen the original but i enjoyed this one enough to find it and watch it. There were a few reasons I enjoyed it, starting with the fact that it was your typical western movie but it wasn't typical at the same time. It was your typical western story of a business man taking over a village for gold or oil whatever it may be and here comes "the new sheriff in town" if you will, to save the day. Now what sets this one apart from the others I've seen, is the level of comedy brought to it. Cue this combination of seven misfits/outlaws that Denzel manages to scrounge together. Although they had everything in the world against them, the writer didn't make the movie too serious. Funny jokes and stories, and sometimes you just look at the character and can't help but smirk. Even with all the comedy, in the end you still get that sense of satisfaction you're looking for all the while, upset about the ones who died. Another reason I enjoyed this movie was the actors/ actresses cast in their respectful roles. I feel as if everyone played their part exceptionally well. Glad Denzel finally got to star in a western. I've said this before and I've never been let down, I've never seen a movie that Mr Washington plays in the i don't like. They may not be great films, but they are all 6 stars or better. I though every cast member just fit the character they were playing. All in all, I enjoyed this movie, and i would highly recommend anyone to watch this movie even if you don't enjoy westerns. Now if you do enjoy classic westerns you may not enjoy this one because it doesn't necessarily fit the mold of your typical western...

Nothing spectacular, but quite enjoyable
24 January 2017
Well as this is movie first movie review, I'll keep it to a minimum. With that being said, I didn't expect much from this movie. I didn't really hear a lot about it and there's not a whole lot of actors in it that I'm familiar with, with the exception of Stephen Moyer. I must say I was a bit surprised! Not a great movie that's gonna blow your mind or make you want to watch it over and over, rather, an enjoyable film worth actually watching. There's a little twist that makes it interesting and holds your attention. Actors/actresses did a fine job, they played their parts well and made them very believable. I rated this a 6 because it's worth a lazy Saturday morning watch. Enjoy!!
