Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005)
Madea ruined the movie for me
If it weren't for that one extremely unfunny character I would have loved this movie. Madea (Tyler Perry's character) I'm sure has fans, and Tyler may be a talented comedic actor, but in my opinion, was so out of place in this movie, it was painful to watch this 4th grade humor in an otherwise well scripted and touching movie. I realize it was supposed to be funny in places, and I usually love the Wayans humor, but I couldn't agree with such recycled jokes. Just as I was getting into the movie, it was as if someone flipped the channel to the Gong Show for a few minutes. I was actually telling my friend what all the "punchlines" were before Madea said them.
Madea's character, a painfully obvious man in woman's clothing with a bad makeup job, seems to be trying to mimic the genius of Eddy Murphy's multiple characters in The Nutty Professor (brilliantly done, by the way). This just didn't work for me...at all. Oh well.
Family Dog (1993)
Take it for what it is - you'll enjoy it much more.
This is a short, 30 minute film about a family dog. I don't think it should be dissected and analyzed - otherwise, you'll totally miss the fun and laughs it was intended for. If you ignore the big names associated with this film like Stephen Spielberg, and just watch it when you're in the mood for something silly, which most of us do when watching cartoons/animation anyway, you will enjoy this film as much as I did. I grew up with small dogs in my household all my life, and can identify with the humor. There were many places of subtle humor as well, which I enjoyed very much. I consider myself a movie buff (with over 300 movies in my collection) and some you just can't take too seriously in order to enjoy. If you do, you may miss out on the little films like this to make you laugh.
