Vom Suchen und Finden der Liebe (2005)
Excellent Film
The brilliance of this film is on several levels. The visual effects and the direction of Helmut Dietl perfectly compliment the writing (script by Dietl and Patrick Süßkind) and the superb cast. In addition the all the visual appeal, the music is not to be missed.
This is a film that you will either love or hate, that's what it comes down to. I think that if you enjoyed Eternal Sunshine (Vergiss mein nicht) you will enjoy Liebe. There is a balance of raw emotion coupled with the humour that is always missing from straight up dramas.
The problem people seem to have with this film is the distinction between whether we are supposed to think that Dietl is making a joke or if he is serious about the possible existence of eternal love, die einzige große Liebe I'm Leben. I believe that Deitl wants to show us that it's possible, but that humans inevitably screw it up.
Sin City (2005)
Brilliant!
I was lucky enough to see this movie at an advance screening this morning, much ahead of it's April 1 release date.
I have never read any of Miller's graphic novels set in Sin City, so I was a bit curious as to whether or not the film would make sense to me.
The movie was totally amazing. Every single aspect of the movie was purely creative, so even if you are skeptical going in, you can still appreciate the work of art that it is. All of the backgrounds are computer generated. The movie is, for the most part, in black and white. (With the occasional exception of certain things, like lips or eyes, etc.) The soundtrack is quite appropriate, and was done by Rodriguez himself. (What can't this guy do?) Unlike it's Miller counterpart, Elektra, there was an actual plot backed up by great acting. The story I found the best (it revolves basically around three) was Mickey Rourke's-- who was also my favorite character from the film because of his "man on a mission" attitude.
I'm curious to know what fans of Miller's series of graphic novels will think, as far as it being what they have hoped for/expected, but for me, this movie was dynamite.
The Wedding Date (2005)
The Wedding Date- FROM HELL
I had the bad fortune of seeing this movie last night on a sneak preview. I can predict that it will be sneaking to a video store near you, and that all the copies will gather dust rather quickly.
The movies fails on every level, and it's not like I was expecting something super to begin with. The acting is awful, the characters have no depth (they could have been replaced by card board cutouts, bother literally and metaphorically). The story is just a turd, focusing on a woman trying to make her ex jealous by hiring a male escort and then flying him to London to be her guest at her sister's wedding. That's it. Not to mention the fact that some serious scenes were written into it, which failed miserably.
I can't stress enough how awful this movie was. If it was supposed to be funny, it failed. If it was trying to entertain us, it failed. If it tried to fall back on conveying a message since it was bad at the previous two items, it didn't.
This movie has no redeeming quality whatsoever. I hate to tear things apart, but this film deserves it.
