The Accountant (2016)
Beautiful
I don't know what I was expecting but what I got in this movie was way better. This family drama, meets action thriller, is expertly written with great pacing. Ben Affleck plays the lead with an impressive supporting cast that takes us through an intriguing unfolding mystery with high octane action, twists and lots of heart. I was on the edge of my seat, trying to solve the mystery, flinching at the high impact fight scenes and taking mental notes of breadcrumbs that had the potential to bring the story together. The story really paid off weaving a complete tale of love, integrity, isolation and duty, I found myself shedding a few tears because of how well it all came together.
The Equalizer 3 (2023)
Is that the Punisher. Loved it!
Very violent and fast paced and somehow feels like a punisher movie, but also feels like a worthy follow up to man on fire. The master & apprentice chemistry between Denzel and Dakota gave me flashes of their father-daughter like relationship in Man on fire. We see the protagonist more vulnerable, showing more emotion. The action scenes had me twitching and on the edge of my seat and the way the town is shot with the beautiful cathedrals and historical European architecture and streets I loved the supporting cast and the heavy themes of community and kindness. You may need a tissue, it's a surprisingly emotional ride.
The Trade (2023)
A true nigerian crime movie
Pleasantly surprised by this crime thriller that is set in the kidnap for ransom underworld. Blossom shines through as the charismatic lead supported by a cast of heavy hitters and newer faces come together to make the third act worth it. The story is one that isn't foreign to the nigerian experience with highlights of culture and religion in the background. Stan Nze and Shawn Faqua continue to show their versatility and Ali Nuhu gives an award-worthy understated performance as a relatable police investigator. The large cast is really good, the suspense feels real and the pacing was just right. My one problem was that with a couple of characters the accents were a bit inconsistent and sometimes too exaggerated. I don't think that was helpful.
Swallow (2021)
Slow but good
Ijeoma Grace Agu's performance in the final act of the movie is worth all the awards, she carried the tension, the subtle timing and conflicting emotion's and it came naturally. Lots of attention to detail and the large cast is nothing short of exceptional. The story however felt drawn out and sometimes it felt a bit boring. Niyola is truly a revelation in this role and the dialogue shifting from Yoruba to English doesn't feel forced at all. I think the Church scene for instance was unnecessary and there were other major scenes that didn't push the story forward in an effective way. The movie ended up lengthy and a bit boring, to be honest I almost gave up watching it, an hour into the movie, it was however worth it.
The Perfect Arrangement (2022)
An entertaining dramedy
Great fun movie, Sharon Ooja is very endearing and Buvi proves once again that he is a skilled actor. Mr Macaroni makes you forget he is comedian and the whole cast delivers. I loved it, I loved the unpredictable end and the layers each character carried.
Glamour Girls (2022)
A refreshing take on a classic, less preachy more flashy
Loved it. The code switching moving seamlessly from English to pidgin was n point with a perfect cast. Though it is more light hearted than the original, it doesn't shy away from the looming darkness, danger and hunger for more that drives the sex industry.
Zola (2020)
Dark with a great cast and authentic visuals
Great cast, with an unnerving mix of camp in what could have been a dark thriller. It reminds me of spring breakers, but way better. Its funny and authentic but also dark. Taylor Paige really shines through in a role that allowed her to be funny, smack, vulnerable and real. At this point Riley Keough proves she is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood. She nails every part of her very complex character. Her character is funny, ditzy, witty, manipulative and an emotional wreck but also a mystery. On the flip side the Nigerian accent was horrible and they should have looked for a different nationality for Colman Domingo's character. He is great actor but I mean he couldn't even pronounce his own name correctly.
Antebellum (2020)
Not as you as it sets itself up to be
Soundtrack was really nice, the acting performances were also on point and the cinematography got me really excited, some scenes looked like a painting. Conversation was a bit over the top and the to be honest it felt a bit like exploitation porn. So much so that the twist didn't land for me. There might be an audience for this and I am not sure if I fit into that audience.
The Lost Café (2018)
Fun and deeper than anticipated
A well crafted story and an excellent addition to the new Nollywood wave. Gradually the movie reveals itself to be an allegory on taking risks and the journey to self discovery. It also maintains the ever present Nigerian theme of the wisdom of elderly. The lead actress's understated sarcasm and endearing but awkward interactions make the gradual journey of self reflection all the more magical. The ending really did it for me. Beautiful!
Alpha House (2013)
Really funny
The comedy was a bit broad for me at the beginning but as far as political comedy goes this is really funny. And it's one of those shows that builds as it goes, it gets more funny with each episode. While the political angle doesn't favor republicans, the characters are actually very likable and the timing is always on point. It's a very different sort of comedy with no dull moment. John Goodman does a good job as the old school politician with major issues, Clark Johnson also pulls some amazing comic chops really effortlessly, Mark Consuelos is also really good but I think next to john Goodman, Matt Malloy has to be the other star here. His character is really complex ranging from outright craziness and socially ineptitude of his character to the Likability and empathy he brings to the characters personal struggles. If you are looking for a political statement this is not the show for that, it is just pure fun with an older age group in mind.
