The Purge (2013)
Disappointed
Okay, so I went in with high expectations, and ended feeling less than underwhelmed. The premise of the movie was original. One night a year, all crime is legal, even murder. I guess I should say ESPECIALLY murder. The movie didn't seem to flow well. It begins with a half a** attempt to explain what "the purge" is, but never elaborates on how it came to be, or why perfectly nice/normal people seem to think its a wonderful idea. Some even sit around the TV as a family & watch all the murder that's going on. A young boy sees an injured man outside, pleading for help & then lets him in. Meanwhile, a pointless side plot occurs. The daughters boyfriend comes to kill the father because he doesn't approve of him. Its like 5 minutes long & is just there to kill time. The "main plot" is that the group of "hunters who were after the injured man, breaks in & attempts to kill them all. It seems like 10 minutes goes by before that is over...but wait, no, its REALLY the neighbors who want to "purge" them. For a movie premise with such potential, they really did a poor job. I kept waiting for "the good part". Finally, it happened. The end credits.
Goodfellas (1990)
Easily 1 of my favorite movies..and i'm a chick!
This movie easily falls into my top 5, possibly top 3, favorite movies (and again, IM A GIRL). I remember hanging out with some guy friends who were raving about this "awesome movie" they wanted to watch. I was dreading it. "Ugh, a gangster movie?...no way i'll make it through awake." I was SO WRONG. I absolutely love this movie. I expected a Godfather like movie in which (don't kill me, men) I can never follow along, and they all have names I get mixed up...blah blah, but not this movie. It had my attention from beginning to end. Great actors/acting, drama, some comedy, & an overall great story (based on true events). I can't stress enough...ladies, next time your man wants to "force" this on you...WATCH IT! It's great.
Captivity (2007)
Definitely worth watching
I honestly don't know why this movie isn't rated higher than it is. I made the mistake of reading reviews before watching, so I went in with very low expectations of a Saw-type ripoff. It REALLY isn't. The only similar plot point is people sometimes facing events considered torture. It isn't, however, the "main attraction" whereas that is exactly what people want & expect of the Saw series. This movie actually has a plot, and several twists that I never saw coming. Some bigger than others. If you don't enjoy movies similar to Saw (i want to stress...only SIMILAR) then you may not like the movie. Some people just aren't in to it. Otherwise, if you give it a chance and don't nit pick over every tiny detail, its a great movie to watch. It definitely deserves a higher rating.
Gracie's Choice (2004)
Wonderful movie
Based on a true story, this is a movie that I decided to watch on Lifetime, simply because I was bored and couldn't find anything else to watch. I went in with expectations of another 'okay' Lifetime movie. However, I was more than just slightly surprised. Anyone with a heart would like this movie, and anyone who can relate to even SOME of the experiences shown, cant help but get pulled in immediately. Gracie is the oldest of 5 children, (the other 4 half-siblings), but even as a young teen, she was always more of a mother than the drug/ alcohol addicted 'mother' who seems to go a come as she pleases. Usually accompanied by a new 'man', aka flavor of the week. The grandmother attempts to help, but only enables her daughters behavior. Gracie makes a choice. She chooses to put her siblings ahead of herself and give them a better life, at the expense of her own. She gets emancipated & convinces a judge to give her a chance to be the mother that her own could and never would become. She goes to highschool, has a job, saves money for a car, gets a place to live, and manages to get her sibling's back in school, getting better grades and actually doing well. She proves that some teenage moms ARE able to do it all. She manages to do it w/ not just 1 child, but 3 (her sister had become pregnant & left by the time Gracie took over. She showed that giving birth doesn't make you a mother. She works hard to do what is right, and by the end, she still goes to college & gives her siblings/children a real life. This is not the typical Lifetime movie. VERY well made & great acting by everyone. A true story of a heartbreaking life, transformed into a story of "you can really come from nothing and become something amazing. Loved it!
Children of the Corn (2009)
You will never get this time back
This movie is very special. So special actually, I created an account just to review it and hopefully save at least one poor soul from wasting an hour and a half of their lives that they can never...EVER...get back. The movie consists of a married couple who fight and bicker so much that you actually hope they will die. The acting is horrid, so on top of hearing two people fight non-stop, its not even believable. I read that casting was only two weeks prior to production...and it shows. The children aren't scary, creepy, or anything really. They're just kind of silly. The storyline lacks any depth at all, and you find yourself praying for "the good part" but it never comes. I wasn't expecting much from a made for TV SyFy movie, but this movie didn't even live up to my very low expectations. Plain & simple, don't waste your time.
