Dark Glasses (2022)

Atmospheric & yet flawed!
6 December 2022
I'm a Indian & admire Dario Argento's earlier works which were flag beares for gialo films. The latest addition of the master of horror get some of it right but the plot seems very thin. The colour grading is all good & makes it's atmospheric but story has many plot holes. The killer does not seems to facinate the audience & the face reveal is done quiet early for the story. The acting seems to be quiet ridiculous to me me even though the main lead has an artistic body to display. The movie is a small budget movie & is quite evident from the beginning. The movie ain't that bad, give it a watch without any expectations & you'll enjoy it.

A divine first 10 minutes & last 10 minutes
27 November 2022
Movie deserves an 8+ but anything beyond 9 is very much unnecessary. Balancing the IMDb score by giving it a 1. The first 10 minutes & the last 10 minutes is where the movie deserves an applause. The rest of the movie is quite normal, infact there is plenty of commercial elements.

The song "Varaha Roopam" is unforgettable and it's a shame that the music director failed to acknowledge that it's inspired from the song "Navarasam" by Thaikudam Bridge. I literally had goosebumps in the first 10 minutes & the last 10 minutes. Rishabh Shetty was phenomenal is the climax scenes. Kishore as usual did a great job. The OTT version is a disappointment as the song Varaha Roopam is removed & edited with a newer one which is a waste. Yes, bring back the original Varaha Roopam.

It's just okay! Tumbbad inspired.
27 November 2022
Let me come straight to the point, Surabhi Lakshmi was terrific. The casting was perfect, the colour grading & all is perfect as well. But it's the screenplay which falls flat after that 1st half & the animations could have been better. The character of Shine Tom Chacko can be a little irritating at times but he did shine in his role. Aishwarya lekshmi did her part well especially during the 2nd half. The timelines in the movie is quite confusing as the songs & certain aspects do not match with the time period. The songs were unnecessary & few of the BGM seems a mismatch to the time period. Aesthetically the movie is quite appealing but the story seems thin. The opening sequence is literally the same as tumbbad. Give it a watch for a Saturday night movie.

Not everyone's cup of tea!
13 November 2022
Let me come straight to the point, this movie is a wannabe Hollywood neo noir & I must admit that the technical department (cinematography & visual design) is top notch though.

It's a mix of different genres & this can be very confusing for the audience. The movie is slightly dragged & could have been cut short. Some of the scenes were unnecessary, like the maid in Luke's house at night. There's plenty of dark humour & I personally enjoyed this part. Coming to the background score this is one aspect which I disliked in most of the movie; it simply didn't go well with the village atmosphere. Like seriously an English song in a typical Indian village?

Bindu Panicker is back with a bang & so is Mammootty with his negative shades. Kottayam Naseer & Jagadish did their part well, so did Grace Antony.

If you've watched plenty of Hollywood neo noir then give this a miss as there is a certain point where the movie gets boring.

Considering this is Mammootty's first production venture, the team did a great job in bringing something different.

Do Revenge (2022)

Decent teen black comedy!
20 September 2022
If you've watched the cult classic Heathers (1988), you pretty much know that it was an inspiration for movies like clueless, mean girls & plenty of other teen movies. Do Revenge is an homage to these movies. Not much of a comedy nor the black comedy and it felt more like a toned down version. If you love the 90s & early 2000s teen comedies, you can give this movie a miss.

I felt the movie was quite lengthy & certain scenes which were intended for naunced performance were over streched.

Coming to the actors, both Camila & Maya were good for a Netflix movie. But it's somewhat unbearable especially in the beginning where the whole thing looks very pretentious teen wannabe movie. 28 years old Camila plays a 17 year old & it's quite obvious that everything is pretentious. Even the movie has some negative aspects it's still not a bad teen movie.

Not the biryani you think!

First of all, let me warn you that if you cannot watch a movie which is the brutal reality stay away from this movie. I couldn't finish my dinner after watching this movie.

And for the youngsters, you can watch the nude scenes (graphic i suppose) & just forget the rest of the movie. This movie is not for the faint hearted, you might have teary eyes at the end. A very difficult movie to watch & Kudos to the director for bringing in the triple talaq issues.

In a nutshell "Poor man's Godfather"
4 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Giving a 1 to balance the imbd score. I was pretty shocked by the imbd score of 8.7 as this movie should be some where around 7.5 to 8 being the highest.

The plot is unoriginal & is just an unnecessary adaptation of the legendary The Godfather (1972). The start credit music feels like a rip off. If you've watched RGV's Sarkar or Mani Ratnam's Nayagan, then this movie will be a predictable affair.

I feel this movie is heavily overrated & overhyped. Moreover I felt Amal Neerad is also overrated AF. He should be renamed as Mr. Slo-Mo for the excessive use of slow motion. The second half seems to be finished in a hurry.

Now coming to the postive aspects: Even at the age of 70 the big M pulled of some action sequences keeping in the style & charm. The BGM & cinematography is top notch. Overall the making of the movie is pretty good and Amal Neerad added the style & flair to it.

Soubin & Shine Tom Chacko did their part well. I liked Shine Tom madness & frustration being portrayed at ease.

Underrated gem!
24 March 2022
Giving a 10 to balance the imbd score. This is one such movie which takes a bold attempt to convey adulthood. Even though there are flaws in the movie, the cinematography is something which needs to be lauded. Right from the start which begins with the piano being played to the end of the movie, everything is beautifully captured. Moreover this movie was breakthrough for actors like Saiju Kurup & Thesni Khan.

Cliched yet refreshing!
24 March 2022
I'm giving a 10 to balance the imbd score. Even though the movie is a decade old, most of the portion in the movie is beautifully captured & is still refreshing even in 2022. As a person who's born in Thalassery & brought up in Bengaluru, this movie gives me immense pleasure to watch the places which is beautifully captured & is heartwarming to watch the climax scene which is shot in Kadal Palam.

Definitely not a waste of 2hrs if you are looking for a cliched love story coupled up with songs which are chartbusters along with beautiful cinematography.

Deserves an 8+ but 9+ is overrated AF
5 January 2022
If you've watched Vetrimaran's "Visaranai" then this movie would be an extended version with an advocate & a female parallel lead.

People/media comparing this movie to timeless classics like Godfather & The Shawshank Redemption should understand that Jai Bheem stand no where to these masterpieces.

I feel Jai Bheem was over dragged in some of the portions. Few songs were unnecessary & few of the scenes were sentimental over the top.

In a nutshell "Jai Bheem is the most overrated movie of 2021" Does not deserves to be in the coveted 9+ IMBd rating as an overall movie.

Sorcerer (1977)

Easily deserves an 8!
24 November 2021
From an Indian viewer, this movie title can easily be mistaken for a different genre altogether. The movie covers action, thriller, adventure & psychological horror. A solid 2hr masterpiece to be precise.

The two trucks are a visual treat, to be precise the sorcerer truck eventually survives which gave the movie name.

The movie is so engaging that you'll forget the 2hrs. The explosion scenes are so realistic & truck crossing the bridge scene itself is a masterpiece. A lot of hardwork is put in the movie & as a result it's an underated masterpiece.

An imaginary trippy ride!
19 November 2021
Movie starts with an animation of the folklore & ends with the same.

Do not look at the negative reviews, if you're ready to watch something which captivates & get you into the movie, then this is the one.

The atmosphere & feel of the movie is great. The sound & cinematography department is top notch.

Beautiful cinematography coupled up with the alluring background score.

Imagine you live in a place full of freedom & no worries. Yes, welcome to the small forest village of LJP's Churuli. Everything in the movie changes after they cross the bridge.

The movie is filled with profanity & some amount of dark humour to keep you engaged. Like I said earlier it's a land (village in the movie) of freedom & mystery.

The actors did a great job, top notch acting as well.

To end my review, Churuli is an example of exceptional movie making. Hats off to LJP & the entire film crew.

Cold Case (2021)
6/10
Started of with a bang & ended up as a colossal mess!
5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has a promising start but however towards the climax it fizzled out completely.

Let's start of with the good things:- The cinematography is good & nothing to complain about. Instead of a usual investigation of a murder case a slightly different approach is used.

Not a hero centric movie, but this can be a bummer for Prithviraj fans.

Now the bad part:- The length off the movie is 2hr 20 minutes which is very lengthy for the story it offered. BGM was pretty average to bad. Unwanted cheap jump scares & also unwanted BGMs. You'll see a Kanchana reference where the female lead & the maid comes face to face in the night.

The direction was not upto to the mark especially after the 2nd hour. To be specific, from the scene where the villain kills Eva Maria (Athmiya), this scene was poorly directed. It almost looked like a soap opera.

As usual the movie is let down by the usual cliche of the horror genre.

It's a 1 time watch to be precise.

A very good movie torn down by unwanted propoganda
27 May 2021
The movie is a eye opener for any Indian men. I would say this form of patriarchy in the movie is still present in many households in Kerala & in our country. The male chauvinism shown in this movie is pretty accurate and the wife has to bear all the orders from her husband. Even though there is a lot of cultural reformation in Kerala, the sexism thing will never go out of place.

Coming to the brutal climax, the Shabarimala reference was unnecessary. The commie director cum writer put the Hindu community in a bad light. He should have spared Dharmasastha a.k.a Lord Ayyappa, as he's giving a wrong message to the educated fools & youngsters.

The movie is definitely hurting the religious sentiments of the Ayyappa devotees. People should understand that Shabarimala is a pilgrimage like the Hajj in Mecca and not a tourist spot.

Just another horror flick with some good production value.
21 April 2021
I had watched this movie with high expectations on prime video and was a disappointment. The 1st half of the movie goes great and the 2nd half becomes below average. Horror fans are bound to be disappointed.

If you've watched pretham (1&2), kinavally etc. Then you'll know where the story is heading & pretty much predictable storyline.

A one time watch if you really want to watch it. Or else you can skip this and save 2hr 30 minutes of your personal time.

The blueprint of psychological crime thriller in Mollywood!
11 April 2021
"Joji" made me watch this movie & I feel I have explored a gem of a movie. Not recommended for people with a faint heart; but people who love movies of all genres then it's a must watch or people who like darker movies.

Movie starts off with the protagonist pressing a compass into his index finger staring at the blood and the movie ends with the protagonist being shot dead by his own father and obvious with the blood all over.

The screenplay, DOP (Venu) & BGM needs a special mention. The cinematography is something top notch back in the days. Some of the shots (zoom in & out) are brilliant, especially the ones taken from Nirmala's house (protagonist's love interest). The BGM complemented the overall movie very well. And yes the director & the writer of this movie, K. G. George is a craftsman in the genre. The writing is brilliant & so is the direction.

The movie throws light on many aspects ranging from psychosis to lust.

This movie will make "Joji" look like a lite version or even overrated. The hallucinations scenes are something new back in 1985 for sure.

Overall the movie is a well-crafted masterpiece.

Refreshing movie even in 2021
10 April 2021
Probably one of the movie which came out when I just got in to college (PUC). Even though I never saw the movie then, the songs were chartbusters for years. Iktara has its own fanbase even today. I'm a southie and must say I loved the movie. Watched it on Netflix last year & that to on a rainy day in Bengaluru. All the actors did a fine job, Ranbir's role was tailor made for him. Definitely a feel good movie to this day.

A timepass for 1hr 30 min
10 April 2021
Do not expect miracles to happen in 1 & half hour. The movie could have been finished within the time but extended to 1.5hrs.

Movie starts of with Soubin & Darshana being couples and who goes for a weekend getaway. Things go bersek after the car break down and the couple take shelter from a nearby home.

The technical aspect of the movie is pretty good & it's the story line & execution which leds to the let down. There are plenty of loop holes in the story as well.

All the three acted well & that's about it.
