Le voyage à travers l'impossible (1904)
This felt like one of Méliès' best.
I know Méliès was the first do achieve a lot in cinema, but wow his use of practical effects here are rather genius.... even the hazer in the background... I'm feeling like that's got to be a first here too (or at least one of). This was really intricate in production design, and the large cast ensemble keeps this really fun and authentic.
True Story: Chapter 1: The King of Comedy (2021)
I decided that I didn't wanna pay 6M dollars.
BOOM! Kevin Hart is crushing this role..It feels sort of like his life played out- with sprinkled pieces of drama/thrill-ride. Sometimes I think I'm the one who's busy working 18 hour days, but then I look at entertainers like this and truly see the hustle. Everyone has their breaking point, and this series eloquently plays out Kevin Hart's in this counter-factual world.
Dead of Night: The Zombie Apocalypse Is Upon Us (2019)
Screenlife Gem
Wow! This series looks promising. Produced by popular Screenlife filmmaker, Timur Bekmambetov - this pilot episode effectively builds suspense from the very beginning and ends the same way. I like how short these are too and the use of the platform... definitely going to watch the rest of this series.
Charlotte's Net (2021)
Mondo / Shockumentary / Found Footage
Pretty scary. I first heard about this on the Overlook Hour Podcast and watched a private screener. It's uncomfortable to watch, so only approach if you want to go deep into the dark.
SkyDiver (2010)
Weird...but in a good way!
I've essentially watched Eugene Kotlyarenko's films in reverse order now, starting on Spree, then 0's & 1's and now stumbling upon his first feature film, SkyDiver. The movie is broken up into 10 parts, followed by a one-part epilogue sequence- and is currently available on Vimeo. To me this is one of those things you should go into with an open mind, because as an audience member you should remember that you're essentially buckling up for a zero-budget, feature-length Screenlife film that was made in the year 2010. So if you can get past that, you may end up enjoying like I did. Also the dialogue is very unique and innovative, so I'll close out with my favorite quote from part 10: "If I had known that I was putting these plastic bags filled with cantaloupe on your head, then I would have stopped going to the grocery store and I would have just, you know, I don't know... taken a walk in the park for a while."
Fubar II (2010)
This might have been better as a micro budget.
Cult classic... Trish killed it in this... but for production to be granted nearly a twentyfold increased budget on the sequel, I thought they could have at least allocated things better in either the narrative department or with the overall production value. Props to cinematography and the sound/mix though!
White Light (2007)
Love me some aliens and Lifetime horror vibes.
The atmosphere and cinematography are superb. I thought the sound design and some of the pacing could have been cleaned up, but overall- this being a thesis film, I thought it was great!
Be My Cat: A Film for Anne (2015)
Cult Classic
Really unique concept, and an overall genius found footage movie. The method acting and improvisation are very well done- and the dialogue is also quite poetic, feeling like every line could nearly be it's own tagline slogan. The film is funny, dark, entertaining and innovative. It's also made for Anne Hathaway. A must watch in my book.
The Fear Footage: 3AM (2021)
Witness the end...
It's no perfect movie but I really dig this franchise. And for it to be done on a shoestring budget, with a skeleton crew I found a lot to embrace here... Some of the acting is missing, and the dialogue gets a bit repetitive offscreen. Also the sound mix needed some work. But when a movie entertains me, I generally pick up on less of those things. Overall, I thought the conclusion has a satisfying tie in to the first film... Plus those jump scares never miss a beat for me!
The Fear Footage (2018)
Favorite Found Footage Anthology
I'll start by saying this movie gets a perfect rating for me not because it's a perfect movie necessarily, but because it's one of my favorites in the found footage collection. This style that was used to generate jump scares are truly authentic and totally works for me. Later, I ended up buying both this and its sequel onto Blu-Ray, and I won't give away any spoilers, but the packaging is really neat and totally worth the buy!
Curse of Aurore (2020)
A truly scary and sinister found footage horror
If you enjoy horror movies with found footage, evil spirits and the occult, then GO WATCH this movie RIGHT NOW because these filmmakers just knocked this one out of the park... An overall well-executed, brilliant take on the found footage horror subgenera!
M.O.M.: Mothers of Monsters (2020)
Adding this to my Top 100 Favorite Movies List
Written and Directed by Tucia Lyman, M.O.M. follows the story of a distraught mother who suspects her teenage son is plotting a school shooting...
This is definitely one of my favorite found footage movies (and movies in general)! The acting is phenomenal and the story kept me fully engaged. It felt very real and authentic, and had to remind myself there a couple of times I was only watching a movie, lol.
Money (2017)
Violent & Entertaining Cyber/Thriller
Produced by Geofilms Entertainment, this short cyber/thriller (shot entirely on the iPhone 4S) is not the first I've come across now from Spanish filmmakers Alfonso García and Vincent Blonde. Nevertheless, 'Money' offers a unique contribution to the found footage filmmaking sub-genre and I would highly recommend checking this one out as well as their other short films.
Breakdown Noir (2020)
Perfect example of making a compelling story on a limited budget
Breakdown Noir, which was shot completely on the iPhone camera, resembles a perfect example of how one can make a compelling story come to life on a limited budget. The visuals are aesthetically pleasing and the overall sound mix kept me invested from beginning to end. Definitely recommend this one.
Pisces (2017)
I really just loved everything about this
Pisces, which was set up as a proof of concept (for a feature film that Fern plans on making later down the line) is such a phenomenal narrative, that it's nothing short from being a totally flawless movie in my opinion. The high stakes performances from both Cody Fern and Keir Gilchrist are what stood out to me the most. But overall, I really just loved everything about this!
Ghostland (2018)
Scary, Disturbing and Highly Reccomended
Watching this felt like the time I saw Arnofsky's Mother! in theaters - Full body tense, edge of my seat the whole time...feeling so uncomfortable I forgot to move around and relax.
