Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Compelled to review
It's not often I'm compelled to write a review.
See it for what it is, it's a trip down a comfortable memory lane for those nostalgia fans, with a bright new twist to the story and a tearful (for me) nod to so many blink and you'll miss them Easter egg moments. The tribute to Harold is one of the nicest things I've seen in a while. Truly !
The story is formulaic, and predictable, but that's where its char actually lies. You buy your favourite snack, cause you know what you're getting, this is it...you favourite snack and it delivers that warm comfort blanket hug you've been looking for.
Don't watch looking for originality. Go watch for the hug from old friends and enjoy the story that should have been, but couldn't be until now.
Gave me a warm glow I didn't realise I was needing.
The Birdcage (1996)
Simply perfect
This movie has been my go to pick me up for such a long time.
It harks back to an era of comedy that we struggle to replicate now.
The chemistry between Robin Nathan and Hank is electric.
The addition of Gene is a master stroke.
A happy, hilarious, moving, genuinely warm look at the absurdity of life and its ripples is laid out for all to see.
Watch this to simply be happy and feel life can be made simple and enjoyable. Watch this to see actors give a lesson in how it should be done .
Life is too short to not have this kind of joy and energy be part of yours.
Robin , Nathan, Hank & the ensemble , I thank you.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Something special
This one will stay with me for a long time. A special look at how love affects us and how we deal with life. I loved this episode, I shed a tear at how they dealt with life, love and loss.
Truly a heartwarming look at how it should be.
Those that see two men, rather than two people , really need to take a look at themselves. Once in a while a special show comes along, and within this show, comes moments, episodes that can come from out of nowhere and hit you hard.
This show is shaping up to be a special moment and this episodes goes a long way to making it happen.
I've nothing negative I wish to say about what I've seen so far. But I do want to say, more of the same please.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Back to an age of unbridled fun.
Loved it, loved the newness mixed with nostalgia. Done perfectly. If you are picking fault with this movie, you clearly have no fun left in your life. Sit back, enjoy the ride. Mr Cruise delivers a near perfect blockbuster / popcorn , lose your worries for a coupe of hours gem! . I had been wanting to see this for ages and finally got round to it, and I'm kicking myself that it took so long. I was truly touched by it. I smiled, laughed, cried and held my breath. The care in which this pays respect to its origins while bringing us into the now is done beautifully and I cannot emphasise this enough! SEE IT, and feel the need, the need for speed one more time.
The Old Guard (2020)
Loved it
Really good movie, yeah, not perfect. Felt rushed as if catching up to itself, but all in all a really good action movie, good story, has potential to run out a few movies. Worth the watch.
Tell Me Who I Am (2019)
Tragic, yet beautiful in its love of two brothers
You have to see this, you have to, the pain is almost too much, yet the love of family and two brothers is awe inspiring.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Hit and a miss?
Well, i don't quite know what to make of this movie, i was really looking forward to it, so, i don't know if it has been my expectations being too high, or if the film was really a mediocre offering. I really wanted to enjoy it, but it didn't do it for me. It was OK! everything about it was OK!, but something niggles and continues to niggle and i think it was the story, it was, well.....predictable and i mean, forehead slappingly predictable. The acting was meh! The visuals were as expected of an Alien movie. The whole thing seemed an effort rather than exciting. Was it meant to be a popcorn no brainer? Are all the Alien movies just that? if so, then am i looking for too much out of these films. I love the Alien films, but this one, was, well a meh!. Again, maybe i am being harsher than i need to be, but when you enjoy a series of films, a less than perfect addition to the stable, can leave you feeling disappointed and that i'm afraid is the feeling i got when the end credits rolled.
Not a dud, but not a stunner.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
An old fashioned entertainer
I am going to start this off by saying, i wasn't expecting much from this movie. I went to see this fully expecting to regret it, but do you know what, i actually enjoyed it way more than i thought i would. Sure it's a no brain needed kinda movie, but do you know something, we all need one of those now and again, and this delivered in spades. Was a pleasure to watch and i enjoyed every minute. Would recommend it for a couple of hours out your day if your in the mood for some fun.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Not anywhere near as bad as they'd have you believe
Firstly, the film is too long, there is no doubting this and the story crams probably far too much in. I understand it's for the setup of Justice league movies, which i hope are as good as they should be. I think the story pretty much encapsulates the eventual friendship and bromance of the Batman & Superman, Justice league combo. It's been very difficult to deliver a Superman movie that truly fits the big mans rightful place as the ultimate superhero and I am going to go out on a limb and say from the off, Best Batman by far, thought Ben Affleck nailed it. The Movie itself as a whole is as it should be, bringing two ( or more )worlds together for a future franchise, one of which i am buying into, being a Superman fan. It's early days for a blossoming franchise, but one which really didn't start out as badly as they'd have you think.
All i'll say is, i'm watching with an eager and open mind.
Go see it, it's a good start.
Harbinger Down (2015)
middle of the road.(just)
OK Not the worst movies i've ever seen, but it's by no means going to be remembered for anything special. Lance is about the only thing that holds it together, good actor, underused in my opinion, but even he struggles in the last third to hold the film together. The acting from some, is, shall we say, tired and formulaic, there are flashes from a few, but that's the thing, it's just flashes of what could have been.
So far as the story went, it was very much a "the thing" meets "Alien" meets fishermen..... A promising idea and a good story could have been told, but alas, they fall into the traps they so desperately needed to avoid for comparisons to other more polished bigger budget franchises. A bit more attention to the less is more camp, for achieving a scare where you don't have a big enough budget, would have done more for the poor poor effects and this coupled with poor acting in parts, leaves the film sagging in places where it could have been sailing high.
As i said, not the worst, but by no means the movie it could have been. i gave it a middle of the road meh! rating
R.I.P.D. (2013)
OK, have to disagree.
OK people, i have to disagree with the majority and the rating here. The film is in no way on par or worse than some of the ratings of other movies on here. Yeah it has it's flaws, but it is funny and entertaining. I cannot see the reasoning behind some of the absolute out and out attacks on the movie, don't know if it's just an attack on it's resemblance to the MIB franchise or the actors? I thought Jeff Bridges was very funny and carried off his role to a T. Yeah Ryan was a bit one dimensional, but hey, there have been actors getting away with that and making it their trademark for years. Storyline was not the worst out there compared to some "classics" I enjoyed the interaction between all characters, my only complain is there wasn't enough between some of them.
Not half as bad as some would have you believe, by no means a 10/10 but by no means a middle of the road movie either. Treated very unfairly i believe. Stop all the tantrumetry and give it a break people.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
awful movie
Good scenery and long stares between characters does not make a good film. Absolute waste of my time. Nothing in this movie redeems it. The one star i am forced to give it, goes to the scenery, it at least has the excuse of not being able to get outta the way of this boring long long long nothing happening, drivel. people walk in and out of the film and if they die, they are the lucky ones.
Yeah it's meant to appeal to "film buffs" and you have to oohh and ahh over its clever use of shades of colour, grittiness and long awkward stares before someone yawns and moves on to the next scene. I truly wish i could unsee it. It absolutely does not deserve the rating it has. I think duly in part to the film luvvies cooing over it like the prodical son returned.
A poor excuse for art.
Into the Woods (2014)
Truly awful and should stay in the woods.
It's not often i feel compelled to write a review, but how this manages to garner support let alone any chance of awards is beyond me!. Trust me people, save your money, we couldn't watch more than 2/3's. A musical is meant to be just that, Musical? Music was awful, made me cringe and my ears bleed. My daughter was looking forward to this for months and to watch the happiness in her eyes turn to complete pain, boredom and sadness was such a shame. My two boys were in absolute agony twenty minutes in. As another reviewer has said, they only musical bit to stick with us was the two princes, i am sure it was meant to be comical, but just couldn't tell. Meryl was her usual blistering self, Depp, truly underused, the rest looked lost and frantic. But as i've stated, it's a musical and this is where it becomes unforgivable, the songs were just, well, bad!. opportunity missed big style, truly a fumble in the jungle, or woods!.
The Quiet Ones (2014)
Not what it's cracked up to be
I like my horror movies, to be more precise i like my supernatural horror movies. This unfortunately wasn't one of them. I had such high hopes for this movie, Good cast, trailer looked good, what could go wrong. Well, everything was there, except for a scare. I realised about a third into the movie i had a feeling, didn't know what it was, then it dawned on me, nothing had happened!, absolutely nothing. I continued to watch, with hopes of something happening and that is where the movie gets you, It lulls you into thinking the big reveal is just about to happen, and yet another small reveal happens along with a new bit of info to the mix. But sadly is like a cheap dinner, Smells and looks good, but leaves you wanting. Acting, i have to say, was meh!, the blonde! please! stereotype was almost tattooed on her forehead, along with the nutty professor and religiously shy hero.
Sorry folks, this is not what it is tarted up to be!, it's a meh! rainy waste of a Sunday afternoon.
Disappointing, disjointed, disinterested.
Haunt (2013)
Disappointing
Such a pity, this movie started with so much promise, then seemed to lose it's way and quite possibly money and time. Was building to quite an interesting spooky story, then WHAM!, out of nowhere it ends, with so many loose ends, so many questions, so many "eh!, but what about" questions. "why did that happen" moments. Quite honestly, you watch this and you feel, well, cheated!. Such a pity, there were a few, suspend your belief moments, but weren't too niggly. But ultimately, this movie was a mish mash of Coulda, woulda, shoulda moments it was just too hard to ignore or forgive. You watch this movie and you feel time was not on it's side. It's the shell of a movie that could have been.!!. ;(
Apartment 1303 3D (2012)
Truly awful
Truly awful movie, never made it past 15mins, even that was kind. Acting? What acting? . You have been warned!. I watch and love a lot of horrors, trust me, this shambles was ruined by too much talking to ones self, too much inane shouting "hello, who's there". Shes just moved into an empty apartment! . I can sum it up really by saying, the acting made me cringe, it really is that bad!. Rebecca da mornay, oaft , whats happened to you. Or were you really always that bad? Poor acting, directing and butchering of what probably coulda been a good movie. Another lazy missed opportunity by American cinema, as i have said, i tried and tried to push through and watch it, but could not fulfil that one simple task, the laziness reeks ouuta the entire production, the dialogue, just makes you feel uncomfortable and not in a suspenseful or deliberate part of the movie, i mean, it just doesn't make sense.
