Charitraheen (1974)
Good Girl Gone Bad.. Drama from the '70s
The movie is about an innocent Sharmila Tagore, who meets Sanjeev Kumar and they fall in love with each other.
A twist in the story happens and he gets married to another girl (Yogeeta Bali).
After a long time he meets Sharmila, who has changed and became a prostitute.
And in time of crisis, she helps him.
The movie has done fairly well at the box office and the acting of Sanjeev/ Sharmila is one of the highlights in the film.
Anyway, there seems to be some misunderstanding in the credits as Parveen Babi is not part of the cast; nevertheless, she acted in a movies called "Charitra" not Charitraheen.
This is one of the movies that seem to have never been released on Video or DVD.
Zehreela Insaan (1974)
Poison!
This movie is one of the early works which brought Rishi Kapoor & Neetu Singh as a hit pair in the 1970's.
The story revolves around Rishi Kapoor, who is conceived as a bad person, while the fact is he is kind but being misunderstood by others. He falls in love with Moushumi Chaterjee, and gets rejected by her family, who gets her married to somebody else. He then falls in love with Neetu Singh after so many hate and fights between the two of them. The rest should be seen to avoid spoiling the surprise elements in the film.
The movie has some melodious songs like "O Hansini", which is still popular till date.
Watch it if you like to see the magic of the hit pair Neetu & Rishi.
Dil Diwana (1974)
Crazy Heart
A romantic comedy with the required ingredient of 70's movie like drama, songs...etc.
The story is about a spoiled rich guy (Randhir Kapoor)whose concern is to have flings & party. He meets Neeta (Jaya Bhaduri) & they fall in love gradually. When Vijay decides to repent & get married to Neeta, enters another woman (Aruna Irani)into his life claiming to be his wife. The plot reveals towards the end.
A run of the mill movie with a clichéd plot.
Watch it if you are interested in 70's movies & have a plenty of time to kill.
Dar emtedad shab (1977)
Age Barriers
This movie was made during Googoosh's peak days (i.e. one year prior to the Islamic revolution in Iran).
It tells the story of an artist (Googoosh), who just came out of a broken relationship. Her neighborer is a young man, who is obsessed with her voice & beauty. He begins to chase her wherever she goes until she falls in love with him. Then she comes to discover a shocking thing about him & you need to see the film to know that.
Googoosh excels as usual in her role.
The film starts withe light drama & ends in a heavier one. Some bits of Googoosh's songs are thrown here & there in the film, and they do add a good taste to the melodramatic plot.
Not to be missed for Googoosh's fans
Aap Ki Khatir (2006)
Copy Copy & Copy
One wonders if this is the same Director/ Darmesh Darshan who made films like "Raja Hindustani" & "Dhadkan".
A clichéd theme with scenes copied from Hollywood movies like "French Kiss", "Bridget Jones Diaries", "The Wedding Date" to name a few.
Akshay Khanna is good as usual, while Priyanka Chopra needs a complete makeover with her clothes, make up, acting...she needs lots of improvements. Suniel Shetty should quit movies, he spoils the film even more by trying to be funny. The less said about the others the better.
The movie has some melodious tunes by the latest sensation in the Hindi music world Himesh Reshamiya. One wonders what's the purpose of using words like "bullocks" & "get a life dude" in the songs, negative words that spoil music!
A large number of Bollywood directors seem to be in desperate need to attend creativity courses.
Just think people instead of trying to take your audience for a ride.
Farebi (1974)
Farebi
The movie revolves around the lost & found formula, which was very popular in the 1970s Hindi film industry.
The lost son (Khanna) is a gambler cum thief, he is sent to his mother's house (Nirupa Roy), which he left when he was a little child, to pretend to be her lost son. In the process e falls in love with Moushmi Chatterji and realizes the truth about his identity.
The film has some nice songs & some good filming locations.
This movie was listed by the magazine "Picture Post" as one of the 1974 hits; however, seems like people forgot about it as there are no Video/ DVD releases or even satellite telecast.
Manoranjan (1974)
Good Remake
This is the Hindi version of "Irma La Douce" & it is not one of those bad remakes.
"Manoranjan" is a funny musical with good performances.
However, the movie is finally released on DVD by Shemaroo & selling like hot cakes.
Do not miss it if you are a Zeenat Aman fan, & check out the actress's' performance in her the early days of her career.
Sanjeev Kumar gives one of his funniest performances.
To support, there is Shammi Kapoor, Faryal & others.
Manoranjan is a total entertainer.
Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998)
Bad remake of "French Kiss"
Here's a million Dollar Question :"When is Bollywood going to stop doing bad remakes of Hollywood movies?" Nobody has an answer to that I guess.
What makes matters worse is that in Bollywood, Filmmakers take their time (&liberty!) to remake Hollywood hits (i.e after more than 3 years of the release of the later).
Exaggerated emotions, cheap & unreal ending with lots of accidents & the hero trying to stop an airplane from taking off for the sake of love!!!
Give us a break & make original Indian themes.
Salaam Namaste (2005)
Re-makes...re-makes & more re-makes
Though a well made movie...with well known & established actors (Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Arshad Warsi...etc)...good direction... The story of unmarried couples living together is unusual in Hindi cinema, but unfortunately nothing is original about it.
This is another Bollywood re-make of a Hollywood movie, and this time it is "Nine Months", a movie which was released (10) years ago in 1995 with Hugh Grant & Julianne Moore.
The million dollar question is: why is Bollywood still remaking Hollywood movies which were released over 10 years ago with big budgets, big star-cast...etc? There seems to be a shortfall of creativity amongst directors & story writer in Bollywood. The next question is: why do big stars accept such movies? is it money? easier roles (being copycats)? This is unforgivable I must say to take people for a ride.
A good advice for Bollywood's filmmakers...try something original at least.
Tezaab (1988)
A remake!!
N. Chandra's Tezaab was given more than it's due. True the song "Ek Do Teen" is a foot-tabbing number & Madhuri Dixit shot to fame with this movie, yet what nobody seem to have noticed that it is a bad remake of Hollywood's action/ musical "Streets of Fire" (1984).
Much publicity was given to the movie, which helped to make it a big success.
Another flick used to make the movie a definite success, was adding a song number after the film's release.
Nothing special about this movie if you're well acquainted with good movies & cinema.
Satyam Shivam Sundaram: Love Sublime (1978)
Love Sublime
One of Bollywood's memorable themes. The story of "Ruba", the scar-faced girl, is still remembered by Hindi film goers. The theme is set in a village, where "Ruba" is born and her mother dies right after giving her birth. This unfortunate event leads the villagers (including her father) to mark "Ruba" as "cursed" & as fate would have it one side of her face gets burned assuring her being cursed. She grows up to become a beautiful young woman (Zeenat Aman)-hiding the burned side of her face- with an angelic voice, until the newly appointed engineer (Shashi Kapoor) arrives at her village, hears her voice & falls in love with it. The rest remains to be seen in this masterpiece made by the great late filmmaker "Raj Kapoor".
The film gives the message to fall in love with internal beauty.
Do not miss watching this movie for it's great acting, locations, excellent music/ songs & of course memorable direction.
Heeralal Pannalal (1978)
Funny
A funny commercial movie with a light theme, which went on to become a hit when released in 1978. Real life uncle (Shashi Kapoor) & nephew (Randhir Kapoor) team up as friends with the beautiful Zeenat Aman & Neetu Singh. The outcome is : comedy, music, drama & all other ingredients of a commercial Hindi film included with as elegant star cast, which over-shadowed the weak plot of the film.
Look out for the song "Aja meri pyar aja" sung by Lata Mangeshkar & "O padosan ki ladki" by the late Kishore Kumar.
One wonders why this movie is not released on DVD or being screened on TV.
