The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
The Fault Is Not in Our Stars, But in Ourselves??
The Fault in Our Stars was good. It was funny and certainly heart gripping. I thought Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort did a great job. Overall the story itself was magnificent, albeit there were several faults in the film itself.
The editing was awkward at times and there were noticeable contradictory mistakes that I will not dwell on other than to say (without spoiling anything) that there is a teleporting basketball trophy... See if you can spot it!! I also felt that the framing was too narrow at times and some of the two frame shots were unnecessary and distracting. My last and largest problem was that there is a huge difference in what works in a book and what works on film. Some scenes can feel odd – and that is because they are out of place. In addition, the themes could have been much stronger and left us in really thinking. Sadly the film did not quite make it.
I may be focusing too much on the negatives. I did rather enjoy the film and thought the book was fantastic. I would recommend it to anyone contemplating. Enjoy!
Divergent (2014)
A detailed review of Divergent
>> Story - (5/10) - (Interesting at the beginning, but became ridiculous with too many "big deal" deaths that we couldn't care much about)
>> Screenplay - (7/10) - (Wording flowed fairly well, and there were a couple humor reliefs)
>> Acting - (7/10) - (I don't know who you are, but not bad. And Shailene Woodley is awesome)
>> Cinematography - (6/10) - (Nothing special. Too many up close scenes where they're unnecessary. Some scenes were framed so poorly that the effect of it came off as awkward (both deaths of the parents))
>> Editing - (7/10) - (Most transitions were pretty smooth, but the ending could have used some work)
>> Visual/Special Effects - (6/10) - (Was it just me or did all of the landscape shots seem out of focus?)
>> Costume/Hairstyle/Makeup - (8/10) - (All of it matched each faction fairly well, but was perhaps a little overdone. That jacket Theo James wore... can I have one of those?)
>> Set Design/Color - (7/10) - (Looks cool inside, but how does it look like crap outside?)
>> Soundtrack/Effects/Mixing - (6/10) - (I heard a lot of exaggerated pew pews, rough transitions, and... did I just hear some of the Catching Fire Soundtrack?? Come on JXL. The Dark Knight was so much better... or was that because of Hans Zimmer)
>> Choreography - (8/10) - (Practical, creative, yet traditional)
>> Direction - (5/10) - (There is a distinct North Pole and South Pole. There are a lot of good parts, but also a lot of bad parts. Come on Neil Burger, get it together)
>> My Personal Opinion - (5/10) - (I left feeling rather unsatisfied, but that is because the ending ruined it. The first hour was better)
Total Weighted Score: (6.4/10)
